National popular vote bill dies in Maine
The Hill ^ | 06/17/19 | Reid Wilson

Maine legislators on Monday killed a measure that would have awarded the state’s electoral college votes to the winner of the national popular vote.

A bill to enter Maine into the National Popular Vote Compact failed in a 68-79 vote on Monday in the state House. Twenty Democrats joined Republicans in voting down the measure.

The bill had been introduced by state Senate President Troy Jackson (D), and it passed the upper chamber in May. It lost a test vote in the House last month, then won a vote last week before sputtering on Monday.

Maine is the second state to reject a national popular vote measure in recent weeks. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) vetoed a version of the bill that passed his Democratic-controlled legislature earlier this month.

Five states have joined the compact this year. Democratic governors in Oregon, Connecticut, Colorado, Delaware and New Mexico signed versions of the model bill.

They join ten other states and the District of Columbia in the National Popular Vote Compact, which would award their electoral votes to the candidate who receives the highest popular vote total. The compact does not go into effect until their combined total adds up to 270 electoral votes or more. To date, those 15 states account for 196 electoral votes.

All of the states that have ratified the compact so far voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Supporters of the proposal have struggled to make inroads in Republican states of late, though some legislators in states like Oklahoma, Michigan and Utah have introduced versions of their bill. Arizona’s Republican-controlled House passed a version of the compact this year, though that bill stalled in the state Senate.

They should have waited for the coming thousands of Congolese border jumpers to arrive in Portland. They can get on EBT, register Democrat and then it will be a piece of cake.

Liberal heads will explode in the next election when Trump wins the popular vote and all these clowns realize they accidentally turned their state back to red. LOL.

Then they’ll decide that their new agreement only applies if democrats win the popular vote. WATCH FOR IT.

Promising news. Only the deepest blue states want to kill off the electoral college.

That would expose fly-over country to the tyranny of rule of the east and left coast mega liberal hell-hole cities.

I have no idea why anyone thinks this is a good thing. It’s basically saying “Our state gives up it’s voice and right to choose, we’ll let the other states do that for us.”

Of course it’s liberals not playing the Electoral College chess game well and just wanting a popular vote. That could backfire too.

They will simply instruct the SecyState to not certify the vote saying, “The compact would be unconstitutional. We will continue as if it didn’t exist.”

Democratic governors in Oregon, Connecticut, Colorado, Delaware and New Mexico signed versions of the model unconstitutional bill.

IOW, they favor suicide.

North Korea elects their president by direct popular vote. Iraq used to.

The compact does not take effect until states with a total of 270 electoral votes have agreed. That will not happen by 2020 and probably never. The small states have wised up.

Good

It’s an illegal effort to avoid the proper manner of amending the constitution

This may be a clue to how globalist think. Give up your rights to a larger government entity and somehow that will benefit them.

The big obstacle keeping them from getting to 270 is the so-called “blue wall” of PA-MI-WI. These states - though blue leaning in Presidential elections - currently have GOP-controlled legislatures. If these legislatures fall into rat hands we will be in great danger of them getting to 270.
So it’s ironic that the “blue wall” gave us Trump and is currently functioning as a red wall protecting us from the compact...

The constitution leaves it up to the states’ legislatures to send whatever electors they want to the convention. They don’t even have to go by who won the state vote if they don’t want to.

I know this is a trick by the democrats to get more electors, but it’s not illegal.

‘It’s not going to be in effect by the next election.’

it’s mind boggling how many people on this forum seem to not understand that simple fact...
