National popular vote bill dies in Maine
The Hill ^ | 06/17/19 | Reid Wilson

Maine legislators on Monday killed a measure that would have awarded the state’s electoral college votes to the winner of the national popular vote.

A bill to enter Maine into the National Popular Vote Compact failed in a 68-79 vote on Monday in the state House. Twenty Democrats joined Republicans in voting down the measure.

The bill had been introduced by state Senate President Troy Jackson (D), and it passed the upper chamber in May. It lost a test vote in the House last month, then won a vote last week before sputtering on Monday.

Maine is the second state to reject a national popular vote measure in recent weeks. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) vetoed a version of the bill that passed his Democratic-controlled legislature earlier this month.

Five states have joined the compact this year. Democratic governors in Oregon, Connecticut, Colorado, Delaware and New Mexico signed versions of the model bill.

They join ten other states and the District of Columbia in the National Popular Vote Compact, which would award their electoral votes to the candidate who receives the highest popular vote total. The compact does not go into effect until their combined total adds up to 270 electoral votes or more. To date, those 15 states account for 196 electoral votes.

All of the states that have ratified the compact so far voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Supporters of the proposal have struggled to make inroads in Republican states of late, though some legislators in states like Oklahoma, Michigan and Utah have introduced versions of their bill. Arizona’s Republican-controlled House passed a version of the compact this year, though that bill stalled in the state Senate.

‘If these legislatures fall into rat hands we will be in great danger of them getting to 270.’

the only reason you or anybody else on this site thinks it’s dangerous is because Republicans can’t win the popular vote, and will be increasingly unlikely in the future to do so...

And if Trump were to win big this time around, it will be repealed before 2024. The Dems need to see him take the popular vote.

‘Getting rid of the Electoral Collage will be the end of the nation as we know it.’

again, the EC is not going anywhere...electors will still meet in March to cast their votes for the presidency, compact or no...

‘And if Trump were to win big this time around, it will be repealed before 2024.’

what makes you think the Republicans will take the popular vote in 2024, with a markedly reduced white electorate, if Trump didn’t take it in 2016...?

I believe President Trump had the popular vote stolen from him in 2016, thanks to illegal aliens voting in huge numbers in California, New York and other states, as well as early voting shenanigans by the RAT party across the country.

It is useful to remember that if the UN did this, China and India would run the show and countries like Sweden might as well not even show up.

The electors meet in December and the ballots are counted in early January. That’s why the Supreme Court made its ruling when it did in December 2000 ending the Florida recount—the deadline was fast approaching for the Florida electors to cast their ballots.

The National Popular Vote Compact would guarantee a Democrat victory every election thanks to ballot harvesting and voting by non-citizens in California.

You are correct. It is constitutional.

Despite 14th Amendment abuse by Scotus, the Constitution still leaves enormous responsibility with the states.

This is directly due to Eric Brakey. a State senator screwed out of his seat, along with a conservative rep because of the leftist rank choice voting which took all the votes from all the many leftists running and gave them to a bigger leftist.

Brakey is good people.

Big & broke poorly-run States that voted for Hillary will back this insanity. And if they win the first thing they'll do is force responsible States to pay off THEIR debts.
