The issue here isn’t so much far left, but extreme anti-white, anti-male and anti-hetero.
Democrats may well understand that Trump is way beyond them in political ability and that they are not going to win in 2020 no matter who they offer up. so they get their most radical desires out there to become part of the fabric and nest time they tone it down but their toned down rhetoric is more acceptable because the voters have heard it all before and the quieter insanity sounds more reasonable and votable.
Matthews may be a partisan hack, but he’s often very politically astute.

I don’t think anyone of either party will ever win a 49 state landslide as we saw in 1972 and 1984.
It won’t be that bad, because Americans have moved left and there is a serious lack of critical thinking in the past 40 years. Hatred for Trump combined with a complicit media will allow the left to win many states.

If you’ll recall, in 1976 the Democrats switched from hard Left back to the center by nominating James Earl Carter - a very public Southern Baptist Christian who promised he would never lie. He also admitted to lusting in his heart to Playboy magazine.
Carter brought about the hard left campaign of one Edward M. Kennedy in 1980 and Walter “Fritz” Mondale, Carter’s Veep, in 1984.
The new version of this, I’ve noticed is to run former military people in swing districts and downplay the fact that they are Democrats. Being a full-throated Christian in the Democrat Party today would likely cause other Democrats to accuse that person of being a member of a “hate group”.
Chrissy is right. But, another four years of Trump glory is not enough to undo the damage inflicted by Clinton and Obama over the past 24 years. Yes, GWB was there in the middle, but he didn’t do much to reverse the Clinton years, and then Obama came along to really step it up.
Also remember, after the 1972 wipeout, the Dems were able to recover in 1976 and give us Jimmah Carter.
About all they have left is far left. There are no centrist dems left. When you rely on Nancy to be your centrist you are in deep trouble.

I think he is more right than he realizes. In ‘72, McGovern had a mentally ill individual as his running mate. In 2020, both democrat candidates are 99% sure to be loonier than Tom Eagleton.

Mondale only got 13 electoral votes. Many states like NY and CA are an absolute lock for the dems no matter who they pick.

I was an 18 year old, somewhat hippie chick, art student, and I voted for Nixon in 72. My boyfriend piled a bunch of us into his van and we drove down to Kalamazoo to see a McGovern speech at Western Michigan. He really pandered to the college crowd. I didn’t buy it.
