Tuesday on MSNBCs Hardball, host Chris Matthews offered his take on the Democratic Partys drift to the far-left, which he warned could have an impact on the 2020 presidential election.
Matthews reminded voters of the 1972 presidential election between incumbent President Richard Nixon and then-Democratic presidential nominee Sen. George McGovern (D-SD). Nixon won in a landslide, taking 49 states and 60% of the popular vote.
He suggested such a scenario could be possible in 2020 if Democrats nominated a far-left candidate to go up against President Donald Trump in 2020.

Whats hard is to identify a leading candidate that is resisting the move to the left, Matthews continued. Very hard because all seem determined to hold their own among those young, strongly progressive, often minority voters expected to make up the voting base in the early states. I have a strong memory of how this pattern of Democratic Party behavior worked out the last time the party went hard to the left. It was 1972. George McGovern was the chosen nominee. Everyone enjoyed themselves. The convention was giddy with excitement even if not that well organized. I was there watching the Massachusetts delegation actually dancing in a circle. They were so happy. The Democrats lost 49 states that year to Richard Nixon who not only carried the Electoral College, losing only Massachusetts and D.C. but 60 percent of the popular vote.

Why, the Democrats could run a child molester for president in 2020 and still win CA, OR, WA, NY, MA, CT, MD and DC. Oh, wait. They just about are.
Chrissy is right. But, another four years of Trump glory is not enough to undo the damage inflicted by Clinton and Obama over the past 24 years. Yes, GWB was there in the middle, but he didn’t do much to reverse the Clinton years, and then Obama came along to really step it up.
Also remember, after the 1972 wipeout, the Dems were able to recover in 1976 and give us Jimmah Carter.
They won't listen to him... Matthews is old - and democrats think it'll be different this time. They're wrong. The country's not going socialist - no matter what they call it.
True - but now like then, young people don't vote in high percentages.
Sanders is the front runner for the Dems. I almost believe McGovern would be more popular.

At least McGovern was a war hero. Bernie got thrown out of a hippie compound for being too lazy.
About all they have left is far left. There are no centrist dems left. When you rely on Nancy to be your centrist you are in deep trouble.
“I remeember that election. It was the first time I ever voted.”
Ditto. My first time, too. I recall driving the Alcan Highway in our new AMC Hornet with a Nixon-Agnew bumper sticker. Wow... that was a looong time ago.
There’s lots of talk of a recession in Europe and Asia.If that happens that could present a problem for DJT.
“The days of a Nixon/Reagan-style landslide are, unfortunately, ancient history.”
True, for the reasons you say. Also, the level of blatant voter fraud now compared to then is higher.
Ain’t got no tingle.
The democrat party is now the Marxist party, and our federal government is completely dysfunctional. Congress, the Executive, the Courts, along with the unconstitutional administrative State have destroyed the morality needed to maintain a civil society.
The illegal alien invasion is Exhibit A.
Christy was counting on Mueller to take Trump out.
I think he is more right than he realizes. In ‘72, McGovern had a mentally ill individual as his running mate. In 2020, both democrat candidates are 99% sure to be loonier than Tom Eagleton.
I tire of this outdated analogy. Today’s demographics and electoral map are nothing like 1972 or 1984. It reflects the the impact of many years of leftist indoctrination, illegal aliens and dem cheating.
Mondale only got 13 electoral votes. Many states like NY and CA are an absolute lock for the dems no matter who they pick.
Lol You’re right.
Good thinking. That old witch will be scheming on her death bed.
Are there any who are NOT far-left?
I agree. Demographics now is vastly different than today.
Different THEN than today.
I was an 18 year old, somewhat hippie chick, art student, and I voted for Nixon in 72. My boyfriend piled a bunch of us into his van and we drove down to Kalamazoo to see a McGovern speech at Western Michigan. He really pandered to the college crowd. I didnt buy it.
