New Yorkers shocked to find food prices rising after minimum wage hike

The result of the Fight for 15 movement in New York City has finally gone into effect. The minimum wage jumped by 15% in many cases, to $15 per hour this month. This mostly affects employers of lower skill level workers, particularly in the food service and beverage industries. And now that labor costs have risen, restaurants from fast food joints to upper-end fine dining establishments have raised their prices. As a result, some people have had to make adjustments in their budgets and lifestyles, going out to eat less often and bringing their own lunches to work.

As you might imagine, that’s not only been annoying for the customers. It’s impacting the restaurant business as well. (NY Post)

New York City’s hotly contested minimum wage increase to $15 — up from $13 or $13.50, depending on employer size — rolled out citywide at the start of the year. And although that’s good news for NYC restaurant servers, patrons are grumbling about its impact on menu prices at their favorite eateries.

Ahead of the wage hike, the NYC Hospitality Alliance conducted a survey of 574 local food establishments in late 2018. They found that 87 percent of respondents planned to increase menu prices this year to offset the minimum wage bump. True to their promise, the cost of food has risen at various spots around the city.

The cost of labor is about 25% of the cost of eating out, not counting the tip. So if the 25% labor increases 15% then the OVERALL cost of dining out goes up 4.25%. Wow we are all going to die!!!

For every 1% rise in menu prices, some number of potential customers are going to decide to not eat out.

The effect will be particularly felt in late night shifts, where there is not that much business, but menu prices do not change.

At the point where revenue on late night shift does not pay for labor costs, they will just eliminate that shift and fire those people.

The process is induced wage inflation. Trickle up wage economics.

The goal is for everybody to get some kind of a raise that will make things rosey and attributable to the loving Democrats who always look out for the little guy.

The irony is that the more you make, the more you save on income tax

Do prices rise when corporate executives receive large raises and reach income levels in the millions of dollars per year?

I smell envy, ignorance and a putrid whiff of Democrat in your post

What is shocking is to find out the owner has two lake houses, a 40 foot Sea Ray and a Ferrari. Then blame the increase of 30 cents on your veal parmesan on the stoop labor.

no... its the fact what it will do to the balance of the labor market. Skilled trades are $5 more out of Apprenticeship. Why the hell should a kid who cant even get a simple order right at the drive thru make more than skilled workers? Minimum wage is a staring point in the labor force. It is not meant to live on indefinitely. Its meant to be graduated from in the traditional way. and that is start, learn the job, and get advanced in salary based on skill level. I personally hope it fails!! No One Owes anyone more money. More money is earned.

Most eateries are not corporate owned. If it’s a small owner-operated place, the owner does NOT get a yacht, and in the place too.

The increase will actually give an advantage to small, family operated places. In Philadelphia, a lot of the lunch crowd gets food at lunch trucks, where the guy serving the food is the owner. These guys would not be affected, since they have no employees.

It’s a labor cost, and all costs are passed along to the consumer.

Another reason not to go to NYC

Did you need another reason? It's obviously full of people like the Cortez nitwit, Jerry Nadler, upchuck Schemer, DeBlasio, etc. Who other than the neo-Nazis of the democrat party wants anything to do with garbage like that

All they needed to do was look at Seattle fast food prices. When similar legislation was passed in 2014, prices immediately started going up and not just by a little. It was like all the franchise owners winked at each other and decided to forget the concept of competition and raise their prices to whatever they felt like. Here is an article from 2016:

https://www.kiro7.com/news/fast-food-prices-rise/40021992

It is much worse these days. If you are going to Seattle tank up on fast food before you cross the city limits and you will save at least 50%. I asked a McDonalds employee in Seattle where the dollar menu was, and was literally laughed out of the store. If you thought airport terminal fast food prices were bad, just visit Seattle.

That's for sure! Last week I made marinated dark meat chicken cutlets on my George Foreman grill, with mushrooms and Vidalia onions, and sauteed shaved zucchini noodles. Side dish was whole wheat couscous with walnuts and carrots. Delicious!

No envy, but all labor costs, from top to bottom, are included in the price of products.

Most small business owners I know all play the poor pitiful me game and tell everyone how they make less then their employees etc. When in fact they are banking a tremendous amount of money in the corporate account. Then they sell out and make a fortune all the while we are supposed to feel sorry for them.
