GM is laying off thousands of workers, closing three plants, and ending production of the Chevy Volt

Amid flagging sales, General Motors confirmed on Monday that it will no longer make the plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt, ceasing production on March 1st, 2019. The news comes as part of a wider plan by GM to slash car production in North America and halt production of several low-selling brands. Trading on GM shares was briefly halted on the stock exchange early on Monday in anticipation of “major operational changes,” according to CNBC.

GM plans to “unallocate” three assembly plants — in Oshawa, Ontario; Detroit, Michigan; and Warren, Ohio — putting the future of those plants in doubt, Reuters reports.

The move will necessitate layoffs of salaried executive employees. “Actions are being taken to reduce salaried and salaried contract staff by 15 percent, which includes 25 percent fewer executives to streamline decision making,” GM said in a statement. An estimated 14,000 factory workers and white-collar employees stand to lose their jobs, according to The Associated Press.

Had been a GM Suburban owner for years until they became Government Motors under 0bama. Bought a 2010 Toyota Sequoia in protest, couldn’t be happier.

The problem with the company is right there in the first line. It takes them 4 months to stop making a car?! Too much management, not enough managing.

The dude was actually really good

Actually, would have been better if it was just him on stage. The girls,, I was trying to figure out what were they there for?

The song sucked, sounds like some piece a crap jingle coming from some government agency or university.

It seems to me that the Volt should have been the next step in developing an alternative to the full gas or diesel vehicle

I think I’ve rented a GM product on at least six occasions in the past decade. They simply have the look and feel of a cheaply made car. The last one...the Malibu...had maybe 8,000 miles on it and I could obviously note five significant problems or design flaws. At some point, over a weekend, I rented a Cobalt...which I felt a lousy ride and if you had to drive 400 miles in it...you were aching at the end.

“I am not a GM guy any more”

2009 did it for me as well. I view it as similar to buying a stolen car because they stole the company from the bondholders.

One question is how does CA meet their future emissions requirement if the Volt can’t survive?

Also, I can’t imaging how much depreciation current Volt owners just took. Has to impact Telsa as well.

Because of CAFE it is basically impossible to build a sedan at a marketable
price point so Ford and Chrysler have stopped making them GM will too. Thanks Rats.

Dammit, my 2017 hatchback Cruze gets 40mpg on average with a 6-speed stick. It is a nice little car.

Guys - read these two stories to get back to outrage status over the phony Obama GM Bankruptcy back in 2009. Her $70,000 in bonds they stole are worth $5,320 about one minute ago.

I am noticing these days that as I gaze around at traffic there are relatively few sedans even to be seen. 70%+ of traffic appear to be SUV’s and cross-overs.

GM is focusing on hybrids but they are killing the Volt hybrid. Doesn’t that tell them the public does not want these hybrids?
