In the spring of 1990, after he had helped the first George Bush reach the presidency, the political consultant Lee Atwater learned that he was dying. Atwater, who had just turned 39 and was the head of the Republican National Committee, had suffered a seizure while at a political fund-raising breakfast and had been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. In a year he was dead.
Atwater put some of that year to use making amends. Throughout his meteoric political rise he had been known for both his effectiveness and his brutality. In South Carolina, where he grew up, he helped defeat a congressional candidate who had openly discussed his teenage struggles with depression by telling reporters that the man had once been hooked up to jumper cables. As the campaign manager for thenVice President George H. W. Bush in 1988, when he defeated Michael Dukakis in the general election, Atwater leveraged the issue of racea specialty for himby means of the infamous Willie Horton TV ad.

Mr Happy made him do it.

I didnt know side boob was a thing back then!
As said in the world of 20-30yo likely voters. “Wait wait? Who?”

I wouldn’t be too worried; nobody reads the Atlantic, anyway. This much I do know, Gary Hart is NOT an honorable man. The husband of a close family friend was assigned to investigate him by the Security Division of the Pentagon. When he went to Harts office in Colorado, and asked the staff questions related to Donna Rice, Hart tried to destroy the man’s career, and almost succeeded, but by the grace of God, the man was exonerated, after 11 months. You don’t try to destroy someone’s career for asking questions about something that supposedly never happened.
... don’t you mean front hole and sucking machine?
In my younger days as a vet at college, I worked for Gary Hart campaign doing phone bank work for slices of pizza. Don’t even remember what he stood for. It was one of those born into being a democrat kinda thing. Can’t even remember if he won the primary back then in California. Oh well. I don’t regret it. Life is a learning process. When I found out he dropped out of the race, I thought...well there goes that. Would he have made a decent Democrat candidate...probably as well as any of the others I suppose. Pat Caddell I really like. A democrat through and through, but an old school America loving democrat. A Truman -Kennedy type of democrat.
This is laughable.
He convicted himself with his own mouth.
Was that Rita Jenrette?
What difference, at this point, does it make?
—Hillary or should I call her President Hillary? Just cankles for short.
It was in the era when Kennedy and Dodd were hitting the bars in DC and groping waitresses and getting away with it.
The press wouldn't touch it.
Then Hart made the mistake of daring them to follow him when he was having an affair with a blonde model with a portfolio of pictures for them to run and move magazines.
And a boat named the 'Monkey Business' for Johnny Carson to joke about.
A perfect storm.
Pride arrogance.... Gary Hart
Hmmm... witnesses dead or not talking.
“We will overlook that it was brought up in the Primary by democrats.”
Well that’s completely different. Republicans are supposed to lose nobly in Presidential elections. Hence, no Obama birther, no Obama’s crazy pastor, no Obama cocaine, no Obama lying about his birthplace to get preferential treatment in college.
Really. You are an optimist. I live in DC and would never go that far.
The GOP needs more Lee Atwaters.
It was indeed. And that was not a very flattering picture of her. I still have her Playboy photoshoot somewhere in the basement archives. What a doll.
I don’t believe any of this. I grew up in Columbia SC with Lee Atwater. We went to rival high schools. He was a genius at political strategy. By the way Donna Rice attended the University of South Carolina, where she was a cheerleader. She was beautiful. Gary Hart was his own worst enemy.
