43% of Republicans say Trump should be allowed to shut down media

President Trump’s repeated cries of “fake news” and attacks on journalists as “enemies of the American people” have resonated with his base, with 43 percent of Republicans saying he “should have the authority to close news outlets engaged in bad behavior.”

The results — suggesting that a plurality of Republicans would have no problem trashing the First Amendment — came from a stunning new poll conducted by Ipsos and reported Tuesday by the Daily Beast.

The survey also showed that just 36 percent of GOP voters disagreed with that statement.

When asked if Trump should close down specific news organizations, such as CNN, the Washington Post and the New York Times — all frequent Trump targets — 23 percent of GOP voters agreed while 49 percent did not.

Well, rather review their licenses and see if operating in the public interest.

Nobody’s proposing closing anyone down. Kick them out of the White House, and stop shoving them down our throats at the airports. But they should be free to peddle their lies to whoever will listen . . .

If Trump did that the demonicrats would tie him up in court forever over 1st Amendment violations. Sounds like propaganda for the libs so they can justify shutting down the internet before the election.

Not necessary.

They are doing just fine on their own shutting themselves down.

I also suspect Borat-like behavior on the part of the questioners: Ask manipulative questions in a way that gets you odd and unusual responses.

no need, they’re doing a great job making fools of themselves. OTOH we also don’t need public funding of the progressive propaganda machine.

No, the First Amendment should be upheld, articulated and defended by those who understand that its section on Freedom of the Press constitutes one of interdependent protections for liberty in a free society. When one freedom goes, the others are at risk.

The U. S. Constitution, with its First Amendment can be likened, as someone has written of the Holy Bible, to an anvil which, if upheld, can, and will, "wear out many hammers."

This is extrapolated from 363 professional poll-takers identifying as Republicans, with a healthy amount of re-weighting offering plenty of opportunity to bias results. I call horse hockey.

Per Ipsos' website:

These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted August 3-6, 2018. For the survey, a sample of roughly 1,003 adults age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii was interviewed online in English. The sample includes 323 Democrats, 363 Republicans, and 207 Independents.

The sample for this study was randomly drawn from Ipsos’s online panel (see link below for more info on “Access Panels and Recruitment”), partner online panel sources, and “river” sampling (see link below for more info on the Ipsos “Ampario Overview” sample method) and does not rely on a population frame in the traditional sense. Ipsos uses fixed sample targets, unique to each study, in drawing sample. After a sample has been obtained from the Ipsos panel, Ipsos calibrates respondent characteristics to be representative of the U.S. Population using standard procedures such as raking-ratio adjustments. The source of these population targets is U.S. Census 2013 American Community Survey data. The sample drawn for this study reflects fixed sample targets on demographics. Post-hoc weights were made to the population characteristics on gender, age, race/ethnicity, region, and education.

Only 43%?

And only "shut down"?

I'm thinking more along the lines of free helicopter tours.

Exactly! Kick them out, make them work for a living as real reporters. Let the blather and propagandize for the communist, just don’t subsidize it with White House offices and assistance. And call them out every time you possible can for their lies and hypocrisy. But ban them? No!

President Trump’s repeated cries of “fake news” and attacks on journalists as “enemies of the American people..."

The first part is true - the second part is false. The big lie here is that President Trump has said that FAKE NEWS is the enemy of the people.
