GOP Enthusiasm Fueled By Trump Could Undercut Democrats' Midterm Hopes
NPR ^ | Jul 8, 2018 | Asma Khalid

Mike Davis didn't think Donald Trump could get elected.

Davis is the kind of Republican who backed Ohio governor John Kasich in the 2016 primaries, the kind of Republican who subscribes to the Wall Street Journal. Davis, 64, is the former mayor of Dunwoody, Ga., a small city in the state's 6th Congressional District, one of the most highly-educated districts in the country.

Ultimately Davis voted for Trump, mainly because he was worried about the tilt of the Supreme Court. With the nomination of another conservative justice expected on Monday, following the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch in 2017 and a large reshaping of the federal judiciary overall, Davis is getting what he had hoped for.

So with time, his tepid support has morphed into a wholehearted embrace of the president.

Religion, The Supreme Court, And Why It Matters

"I love what he's doing with international relations. I love what he's done with the tax code. I love what he's done with the appointment of judges," said Davis. "And to be honest, those three things trump everything in my mind, no pun intended."

There is no doubt Democrats are highly engaged this year. A recent study from the Pew Research Center found they are more enthusiastic about the midterms than Republicans. But that same survey also showed that Republicans are more enthusiastic this year than they were in the 2014 midterms...

Well, the Democrats aren't helping themselves with their Sturmabteilung (Storm Trooper) tactics and their most visible spokespersons sound ridiculously unhinged.

This is a very interesting article, especially for NPR. Most importantly, they did not talk to the Pledge Callers, the Washington beltway deep state, or to the Left and East Coast urbanites. They talked to real Americans who have made rational choices and have carefully weighed what is best for them, their families, and America. They chose Trump and they are more supportive of him as the results of his decisions keep rolling in. These people aren’t represented in the current voting models Many are well educated and thoughtful, the model says those are Democrats. These people are blue collar through and through for many generations. They are Democrats the models say. The models will continue to predict this will o’ the wisp Blue Wave, and odd article, like this one, that destroys the Democrat Conventional Wisdom will be ignored.

The Democrats and the Media (but, I repeat myself) are going to be disappointed. Shadenfreude is looming.

Agree. Shocked at how balanced the article is, considering it is from NPR. Impressed.

WSJ could learn a thing or two; their news articles are written with such contempt for Trump.

Finally, the WSJ Editorial Board (also hates Trump) can trash him over Trade nonsense; they have no clue how negotiation works. They have wanted to trash him over other issues, but tax cuts, Gorsuch, etc., are hard to go against as a business newspaper.

“GOP Enthusiasm?”

Believe me ... the Liberals have absolutely NO idea what’s going to hit them.

They learned nothing in the last National Election.....Because they intimidated the hell out of all Republicans and Conservatives...because they publicly bullied and browbeat ANY and ALL opposition, because no one says a thing for fear of losing their job, causing family disputes, etc... because of ALL THAT, these idiotic Liberals actually THINK they have defeated Conservatism. They learned NOTHING... our voice is saved for the voting booth... as it should be.

Liberals created a tide of resentment against themselves and they have no idea how massive, deep and irreversible it is.

THEY demonstrate ... thinking THAT is their voice...THAT will reverse the resentment.... THAT will change ANYONE’S mind?

They forgot how the whole thing works and made themselves completely irrelevant.

The Nazi Democrats are coming for all of us.

We had better be enthusiastic and engaged.

This is Molly Jong-Fascist, a Resistance biggie on Twitter. She's calling for a Marxine Waters fatwa on Trump supporters.

May I suggest that Molly needs the baby Harp seal cure...

There was a day when the media was comprised of those who came from all works of life and with a wide range of education and professional experience. Journalists students learned how to write obituaries and local sports stories.

These days, most of the media are products of various J-schools where they are selected from the left wing body politic. Conservatives need not apply. Journalists are on a mission, to make a difference, and the metric for achievement in this journalism is adherence to the Liberal party line.

Very well done report. NPR, does actually, at times sound like real journalism, meaning journalism without an agenda. In this report, they found 50 people who voted for Trump and admitted that 49 love Trump even more, and even mentioned the evil 90% number, the percentage of Republicans ready to vote for him again. That was the key to getting Trump removed - bring that 90% number down to 60%, and then some elected Republicans might be willing to risk voting to remove him - but at 90%, it’s political suicide.

It is interesting how the groups they identified were looked at by GOP Old Guard, versus how they’re looked at by Trump. I shall discuss that next.

EVANGELICALS

GOPe: Let’s not make any strong promises, because “Who else are they going to vote for?”, we’re the only game in town that still opposes abortion (but we really, really, wish that issue would just go away - sucks when Democrats bring up the issue at the DC party scene).

TRUMP: I may not have the moral purity in my past to be running for Pope, but I will put Judges and Justices in the mold of Scalia on the bench. You have my word on that...and, of course, he’s come through on that.

WHITE WORKING-CLASS MEN

GOPe: Yuck, they get their hands dirty, they’re smelly, and they’re racist. We’ll keep getting most of them because “Who else are the going to vote for?”. After all, we’re the only game in town opposing gun control (but we really, really, wish that the issue would just go away - sucks when Democrats bring up the issue at the DC party scene).

TRUMP: “Your days of being ignored OVER! You are the Lifeblood of this country!” And no, Trump doesn’t look at them as smelly racists - in fact, one thing missing during the campaign and through today was any criticism of Trump from people who actually worked for him - and that was because Trump ALWAYS showed them respect. The media simply couldn’t find those (Trump-hating workers) people because they didn’t exist - so they had to create a new bunch of ‘victims’ who magically remembered Trump annoying them decades in the past.

VETERANS

GOPe: You guys did your jobs, now shut up and behave.

TRUMP: Loves them to no end, and that started way before he ran for office.

ESTABLISHMENT REPUBLICANS

GOPe: We run the Republican Party, we control the purse strings. Bow down (i.e., support Amnesty and stay clear of ‘controversial’ issues), or you will go NOWHERE in this party.

TRUMP: “Sorry, I don’t need to play by your rules.” But it’s great to see them moving his way...very few left who still oppose Trump and they look like TOTAL FOOLS, since they’re getting everything they’ve ever demanded from a GOP president.

Rubio, Flake, McCain, Graham, Hatch, Heller, Hoeven, Murkowsky, Corker and Alexander already voted at least once to abandon the rule of law and surrender the country to fraudulently documented foreigners.
Some have done it multiple times.

Graham says he’ll keep doing it until he is removed from office.

Bush League Republicans MUST become extinct before the Republic does.

True, or leave them there for the other votes, but neutralize them one-by-one by electing other, America-supporting, Senators.

I wasn’t 100% sold on Trump when he tossed his hat in the ring. Frankly I thought it was a PR stunt for his next reality TV project.

Ditto, or perhaps just a major ego-stroke for himself.

I voted, then mentally crossed my fingers.

I'm glad - ecstatic, actually - to be wrong. From the start with his inauguration speech where he tossed down the gauntlet against the DC Swamp, President Trump has far exceeded my wildest expectations.

Most of the GOP Senators are Bush League Republicans who need to be replaced with patriots.
We would not have needed Trump to save us if they were on our side.

It ought to be at least 50/50 all the time, considering they get taxpayer funding to spout their leftist propaganda. I didn’t sign up to pay for propaganda opposing or undermining my beliefs, but NPR/PBS recieves it all the same.

I wonder if they’re worried that the taxpayer spigot might get turned off. I wish.

I was a Ted Cruz supporter. The behavior of the left in Chicago with their organized riots was disgusting. The fact that Cruz blamed Trump was despicable. The evolution of #Nevertrump started at this point and I have hated them ever since. President Trump has surpassed most expectations as POTUS but I want more Swamp draining, the Wall built, remove Sessions, and bury Mueller. It would also be nice to see Clinton in prison.

I was skeptical too until I listened to a couple of campaign rallies. He won me over with his moxie/views that were simply stated and to the point. This guy didn’t achieve all he has by being lucky. He is good and that is it’s own good luck. I hoped he would bring that “luck” to the Oval Office.” He has!

Always seem that the right man arrives in the time he is needed. After the disaster of Obama Trump is that right man. My only worry is who we can get to follow-up in 6 years? We need to look ahead to the years after Trump. I think his (our) success is assured until then.

I actually think Trump played the media by making statements which seemed extreme (too blunt) and garnered millions of dollars in free publicity because the media thought by highlighting what offended their delicate sensibilities would damage the eventual GOP nominee even if it wasn't Trump.

What they didn't count on was the millions of Americans who craved being told the blunt truth after 28 years of platitudes and political pablum served up by the likes of Obama, Clinton and two Bushes.
