One way this potential government shutdown would be different than in the past -- theres never been a federal shutdown during tax filing season. Nor has the government been shut down amid the implementation of a massive tax code overhaul.
The Internal Revenue Service would lose an estimated 56 percent of its workforce to furloughs if the government shuts down, according to the U.S. Treasury. And it would be happening right when the IRS is updating its guidelines and software, while also fielding questions from the public about new tax laws.
Experts told the Washington Post that even a short shutdown will set back implementation on the new tax code.
Tax filing season begins on Jan. 29. The IRS generally issues nine out of 10 refunds in less than 21 days. With the workforce cut in half, it is likely that a prolonged shutdown could lead to delayed returns and the inability to access IRS assistance phone lines.
The wife and I need passports, never had them. The applications went in 10 days ago’ish. I suspect this will give the State Dept reason to hang us up until any shutdown is over.
Not like we should need to get any govt permission to travel.
“...When I personally used a firm to do my taxes, I picked an agent at one that had worked for the IRS....”
I picked my tax attorney based on his case win rate against the IRS....he’s running about 95% win rate. He hates more than I do.
All I know is because Mitch McConnell refused to repeal Obamacare and all the extra taxes it increased I lost an extra $20,000 last year. If that triple-chinned POS had helped repeal Obamacare the Long Term Capital Gains tax would have gone back down and I would have saved that extra money for my retirement rainy-day account.
Must be 100 times today I heard liberal talking heads on TV say the shutdown will be blamed on republicans because they control the WH, Senate & House.
No they do not! It requires 60 votes in senate to pass any significant bill, and they have only 51 republicans in senate. This temporary spending bill can not be passed by reconciliation, unlike the tax bill.
Why I seldom hear above response from republican talking heads?
Will a shutdown delay the arrival of tax forms at my local library?
Close, but no banana.
Replace the income tax with the FAIRtax and abolish the IRS!
I’ve been rolling my overpayments into “next year’s credits” for years.
Might soften the blow for next year (first year with reduced SALT deduction.
SHUT IT DOWN AND TAKE SCALPS.
D-DAY.
This is Trump’s shutdown and was planned when Trump was 30 years old. It was planned to hurt womyn, childryn, people of color and LGBTs. (/mediots)
Well the real question should be, if the IRS wont be able to process returns, then maybe We The People shouldnt file them.
Yep - been using my military retirement to balance out my taxes to try to get as close to zero as possible - no pain to pay if I owe and no rush to get any refund due.
That’s good too.
The Schumer Shutdown was also no doubt motivated in part by this consequence -- because to the Demagogic Party, illegal immigrants (by definition they are criminals) are more important than taxpayers. Thanks Hadean.
