New research shows that all blue-eyed people share a common ancestor. This person lived more than 6,000 years ago and carried a genetic mutation that has now spread across the world.
The exact cause remains to be determined but scientists do know that eye color began to change long before recorded history began. The following is a transcript of the video.
All blue-eyed people have one ancestor in common, born around 6,000-10,000 years ago. Blue eyes are caused by a gene mutation. For years, researchers had searched for it on the OCA2 gene. The OCA2 gene determines how much brown pigment is in our eyes. But what they were looking for wasn't there at all.

My paternal grandmother claimed that there was a wee bit of Welsh in her background as well. I need to take the test. Who knows what’s lurking back there in my DNA?
My eyes are gray so I don't know where that puts me. My three children have/had clear blue eyes whereas their father's were hazel.
My Jewish girlfriend had beautiful blue eyes whereas I'm sure her mother and brother's were brown, don't remember about her father. Their recent ancestry was from the Black Sea region in Russia if I've got that right. I have no known Jewish ancestors.
My only sibling, a sister, has distinctly blue eyes as did my mother.
Tsar Nicholas II had blue eyes; was curious so I looked it up the other day and share no known ancestry with him. He was also 5'7".
Now my daughter had ancestry run a dna study, don't know how accurate it is; I wouldn't have done it but hers would reflect mine. It was all Western European: German, French, English, Scottish, Scandinavian (possibly from marauders, no known from the physical region), Spain or Castile.
