full title............Former Cuban castaway Elian Gonzalez recalls his connection with Fidel Castro: 'Fidel was everyone's friend'.................................. Tweet email
Elian Gonzalez the Cuban boy who was found floating off the coast of Florida in 1999, sparking an international custody dispute recalled his friendship with former president Fidel Castro, who died Friday at age 90.
Gonzalez, 22, spoke to Cuban state media in Spanish on Saturday, reflecting on his experiences with Castro. He recalled the leader attending his sixth-grade graduation when Castro told an audience about their friendship.
"At first, it was an extraordinary honor, but also a heavy load," he said, according to ABC News. "It was years later that I realized that I had a commitment because I was Fidel's public friend. But Fidel was everyone's friend ... F

One can only hope.
Elian the tool.
Doesn’t Elian realize if Castro was “everyone’s friend” there would not be people constantly trying to flee the island? At 22, you would think he would have some reasoning skills.
Stalin was “everybody’s friend”, too.
He is an active member of Cuba's militant Union of Young Communists.

Miguel Diaz-Canel is a handpicked successor to Raoul Castro, and will take power in 2018. He is described as a "hardliner". Seems like a nice guy, eh?
He knows what purpose his public statements serve for the government that controls every aspect of his life. And, our own government proved that he has no ally here. So, he doesn’t speak out in public, otherwise that would be the last the public would ever see or hear from him, and perhaps the last anyone would ever see or hear from him. Duress.
” sparking an international custody dispute “
Wrong. The media hyped this so much, 24/7, that the country was divided: those who wanted him sent back (lefties) and those who wanted him to stay (righties).
There was no good solution. My choice would have been to send him back to his one remaining parent.
The media knows immediately when an issue is capable of dividing the country. Teri Schiavo. Remember that? 24/7. Obsession. My solution would have been to put her in custody of her parents who were willing to take care of her, rather than withhold food and water to kill her.
So many of the poor slobs in the Gulags were sure that if only Stalin knew they shouldn’t be there he’d rescue them.
Wasn’t his father a Castro supporter? If so, he wasn’t in danger of being on the receiving end of the tyrabny.
I lay Waco more at Reno’s feet. Elian was a singular act of evil against a child, the murder of his soul.
And we wouldn't have that awful picture of a frightened little boy as a reminder.
This is just sad. I saw Elian yesterday on German TV. He was laughing and smiling as he recalled fond memories of his good buddy Fidel. Poor Elian apparently has no idea that he was little more than a pawn in Castro’s propaganda machine. Pathetic. And a disgrace to the memory of his mother. I hope that someday this poor misguided young man learns the truth.
Looks like Tim Ryan, the Stalinist fake Catholic trying to depose Pelosi.
Thank you for posting the picture. It needs to be shown every time this story is talked about.
I cannot believe anyone is still making that discredited and ignorant leftist talking point argument today. He was not “returned” to his father, he was returned to Fidel. There is no such thing as parental rights in the gulag of Cuba. Under Fidel’s Constitution, children are specified as PROPERTY of the state.
His mother died bringing him to freedom precisely to avoid her child becoming a soulless Stalinist automaton to serve Fidel’s evil dystopian state. Period.
[And one more crime in the scales against the judgement of Reno and the Clintons.]
Along with a picture of an aborted 20-week infant.
