I paid a lot of attention to this at the time. As I understand it, Mom and Dad called family in FL and told them mom was gonna try to escape with Elian. The dad was in on it from the beginning.

There was a nun involved who was siding with sending Elian back. After she talked to the dad she advocated Elian staying.

About 7 years ago I met a Cuban soccer player who defected. Castro made the mistake of letting him and his parents out at the same time so they bolted. He said if one family member defects the remaining would be imprisoned or executed.
