Republicans had excellent results in Tuesdays high-stakes Senate races, winning numerous tough battles to preserve their majority in the chamber for the next two years.
But Tuesdays results revealed an interesting dynamic: The Republican Senate candidates who rejected President-elect Donald Trump and tried to go it alone were the only ones who ended up losing their races.
Overall, there were eight Republican-held seats and one Democrat-held seat that were competitive going into Tuesday night: Illinois, Wisconsin, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Florida, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Missouri.
Of the nine Republicans in these competitive races, six of them stood by Trump or, in the case of Pennsylvanias Pat Toomey, didnt reject him. Three of them, though, explicitly rejected Trump: Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire, Mark Kirk in Illinois, and Joe Heck in Nevada.

We are losing them all if Trump ends up giving amnesty to the illegals in our country currently.
Call it doubling down on stupid.
Senator Portman, when he thought the coup was succuessful said he was voting for Mike Pence. He never walked back refusing to support Trump. Give Portman credit....he’s slick and it didn’t cost him the election. Another reason is that the opposition candidate was terrible. Another is that OH voters take him at his word that jobs are his first priority.
You can bet that hairy screed’s number is number 1 on the speed dial. I’m thinkin’ she won’t make a decision on anything without consulting her mentor. I want my Nevada back dammit. Sadly, the legislature is overloaded with las vegans.
Houston has been blue for a long time. The last Republican mayor was Jim McConn, who went out of office in 1982. Since then, we have endured the likes of Kathy Whitmire, Lee Brown, Anise Parker and now Sylvester Turner (who was ably supported in his mayoral bid by Sheila Jackson Lee). The city is a sanctuary city, so new democrats are popping up all the time.
Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso are Democrat, but overall about 41 percent in those cities vote Republican. That provides enough cushion right now to still carry the state with the rural and small-town people, but the million-vote margins are now a thing of the past.
NV and NH were stolen (both the Senate races and Electoral Votes) Heck certainly would not have been saved from Reid’s fraud machine that also stole the state leg and 2 US House seats, based on different actions. Give him every Trump voter that didn’t vote for him which is likely not many, and he still loses.
And nothing could have saved Kirk here in Odumboland, after he made a terrible debate gaffe. Give him every Trump voter who didn’t vote for him and he still get’s creamed.
Ayotte was so close, the thesis may hold for that race.
Houston Republicans don’t seem concerned. They elected a weak chairman in 2014, and he is still there.
At least back in the day Texas Democrats were more conservative than the Rockefeller Republicans.
What is kind of scary is that my county went for Hillary. I don’t actually live in Houston (work there, though). I live in Fort Bend County, which is next door to Harris County. It has heretofore been a conservative area. Tom DeLay was our U.S. Congressman for a long time. His replacement, Pete Olson won handily, but Hillary won the POTUS vote. Maybe there was a strong streak of Never-Trumpism among the Fort Bend republicans. Or, it could be an influx of muslims. I usually see quite a few when I go to Costco. When I used to go to Sam’s, I would see a fair amount of people dressed in African garb.
Karma can be a female dog.
“Sharron Angle was a better nominee than Heck!”
I agree.
Agreed, Dallas and Houston are permanently blue.
But the relatively closer vote for President is, I believe, a temporary manifestation. Cruz still has a very strong following in the state and there was some genuine resentment about the personal attacks that characterized Trump's anti-Cruz strategy.
However, now that a measure of disapproval has been registered, I'd expect things to return to normal and Texas voters to fully support President Trump.
Recall that the statewide GOP candidates in 2014 received record numbers of Hispanic votes. It would appear that the legal Hispanics are converting to conservatism faster than the illegals are moving in.
“So principled Victorian Joe Heck”
You need to replace the word “victorian” with Mormon. Nevada replaced a POS RAT Mormon with a RAT bitch and left the POS RINO Mormon loosing. As a “former Mormon,” I can tell you that you should never trust a one of them. They can “fake piety” better than anyone!
So, coffee or postum? LOL!
Except my crazy state... McCain got more votes than Trump did. Probably better in the long run for all of us than the lib competitor but he did it without my vote.
I think a lot of Texans didn’t vote as Florida had more voters than Texas turn out. People see Texas as a red state but to many folks better not set at home. I thought Trump would win by 1.4 to 1.5 million he only won by 900,000 or so. Those extra votes could have helped the popular vote total some.
Let it be a lesson to the remaining ones. Hopefully their sphincters tightened a little bit, which is a good thing.
I love these people that say "Oh, we just need the "R"'s, they'll save us!" Back in 2010, the GOP told us, "Just give us the House, and we'll fight Obama!" And we gave them the House. What did they do? NOTHING!
They in 2012, they said "Just give us the House AND the Senate, and we'll fight Obama" and we gave them both chambers, and what did they do? NOTHING!
Then they said "Just give us the House, the Senate, and our hand-picked candidate (Jeb) for the Presidency, and we'll fix everything!" And we said NO!
We have had it with these damned RINOs. They are useless. Take the medicine. We'll suffer for a short while, but the GOP will be healthier as a result. This STUPID strategy of always keeping these USELESS RINOs because they have an "R" after their name is what got us into this mess!
Yep, the days of the GOP taking Texas for granted are coming to an end.
