From Brady Dale writing at Observer.com: A lot of weird stuff has been happening to data inside the internets walled gardens. It has been getting shut down by the people who own the sites we all depend on. Theres a protest going on at Facebook over the issue right now. One Turkish journalist is saying that his account has been blocked inside the country, at his governments request; Palestinian journalists have a similar problem. YouTubers believe that their videos have been getting unfairly de-monetized by mindless robots. A Union Square Ventures and Y Combinator backed startup called Blockstack, just barely out of stealth mode, has been designing an alternative browser for what could be fairly described as another internet, one powered by the bitcoin blockchain.

Just wait till the Gaystapo gets a hold of it.
There’s also
Freenet,
FreeSpeechMe.com, and
MaidSafe
all of which used dispersed storage, and are
censor-proof, and don’t keep records of who
uses them
Good. It would be great to see Herr Zuckerman’s Facebook empire be slashed by half when a Freebook shows up.
There doesn’t need to be ‘the’ internet. Many.
bingo
It would crumble like the proverbial sand castle.................
We have no choice!
We will have to create multiple Internets, with independent backbones, and for a time revert back to the AOL days where you had access to a service that was “online”, but connections to stuff like the World Wide Web was just some small part of the overall package.
You may even see the return of Telnet, Archie, Gopher, FTP,and Usenet. Maybe even a mass-exodus to the Deep Web, and a massive spike in using bitTorrent.
The only way to save the now centralizing Web is to decentralize our usage to the point where it wont work as smoothly as it does today, but it will at least be far safer.
I haven’t tried it yet, but there is the new ‘Brave’ browser from the guy that got fired from Mozilla because he was normal.
Try at your own risk:

What’s going to happen to those sites if CONGRESS betrays us today and gives the INTERNET to the world?
I think this is EXACTLY what will happen.
Obama is giving away American control. Countries will start taking over our freedoms, and a competitor (or competitors) will emerge strongly.
Starting next month, we will see that start.
It is important however, we end up with a president who will protect that, for America.
I don’t see Hillary as that person.
Thanks for the link!
Are you sure about that? Not going to happen.
What does this mean for all the concern over the end of the U.S. Gov contract with and release of ICANN?
ObamaNet starts Saturday
“Whats going to happen to those sites if CONGRESS betrays us today and gives the INTERNET to the world?”
A big nothing burger.
ICANN and the UN are toothless paper tigers.
Those site will take off.
Look for ways that will be gotten around, mark my words.

Yup.
Unfortunately links that can’t be controlled are getting harder to find. Dial up? 2020 will see the death of POTS availability. Wireless? Range limited.
Someone enterprising could see about securing a range of VHF and work on building a low speed mesh network. It would be very expensive though.
Maybe see about building a neighborhood network. Build hardware that can mesh together a few houses with a VPN across the old internet to other free folks.
