Time ^ | May 12, 2016 | Sam Frizell

Donald Trump is considering former House Speaker Newt Gingrich as one possible option for his running mate in November, according to a source familiar with the discussions...

Gingrich has praised Trump in the past, telling TIME he has “the potential to be an extraordinarily dynamic president who shakes up a bureaucratic city that badly needs to be shaken up.”

I’ve been thinking Newt for some time now. Newt would be perfect for VP. Trump needs someone to work with Congress to pass his agenda. No body better then Newt at working with Congress. Plus Newt is an out side the box thinker, with a quick wit and a shape tongue. Perfect choice, but does he help win the election? Another old white guy? hmmmm.

I love Newt but we need someone in place for 2020 or 2024 and who brings a state or two

A tall order

If a woman bats her eyes at him, he unzips

It's gonna be a tiny pool of male politicians to pick from then......it is a tall order....in line to run later and brings a state or two in question....I don't see an immediate choice.....I don't want Kasich in 4 years or Rubio

It is hard to wrap ones mind around what is old today verses what was old 20-30 years ago. Offhand I would say 72 today might equate to 60-65 a couple of decades ago for someone that has taken care of themselves.....

"Perfect choice, but does he help win the election? Another old white guy? hmmmm."

The concept of the VP bringing a state in or a region doesn't work IMHO. Look at last 4 or 5 VP's GHWB? please big disappointment, Gore? epic fail. Now Cheney? If GWB listened too him more, maybe he would have been more of a success...

With that said and the Cheney model, maybe a wise old sage as VP who can't run again or is too old or doesn't want it as a team-mate since POTUS is such a big job today is the model we should be looking at.

IMHO the Cheney VPcy will be looked at in the next 10 r 20 years with a historical perspective as one of the best VP's evvvah...

onyx, I agree with you.

We have to remember that, as great as Trump is, the media is still dominated by the Left, and they despise Gingrich.

Gingrich would be a great Chief of Staff or a National Security Adviser, as he can be an excellent spokesman when those roles require that function.

I would like to see someone in their fifties be the VP, so the Trump legacy can be continued.

I do NOT want to see an establishment minder assigned to Trump at the convention, like GHW Bush was mandated for Reagan.

Trump needs no one the GOP wants in power.

And neither do we.

Their day is over.

I trust Trump to make the right decision.

A lot of what is being floated now is just to keep the media chasing their tails.

Pass the popcorn.

That would be a dumb choice.

The last VP to be elected president when first eligible was Bush I in 1992. Before that, it was ... I don’t know, but it was before FDR. Truman and Johnson don’t count because they had already succeeded to the presidency before being elected to it. Nixon doesn’t count because it was eight years after he lost to Kennedy.

So looking for someone who could win in 2024 is not a good strategy. We need someone who can help Trump win (and be successful) NOW. Eight years from now is way too far in the future or predict who would make a good candidate.

Correction to self ... Bush I in 1988. He lost in 1992.

Whomever the VP is, must be able to run the government now.

And that person should run it with Trump’s vision.

Those are the two most important qualifications.

Winning in 2020 or 2024 is secondary, but would be a natural consequence once the above two qualifications are met.

And just yesterday it was one or another of two women governors. Today it’s Newt. Tomorrow, or maybe Monday it will be someone else.

I agree with others....Newt IS brilliant, but would best serve President Trump as his Chief of Staff or Foreign Policy Advisor.

I’d love to see him as COS, primarily. He’d make mince meat out of the press. Bwahahaha.

I’d like for him to be the VP, but I don’t think he helps the ticket at all (except maybe to help secure the base, but the threat of Hillary should do that well enough.) We’ve been to that Trump is going to draw enough crossover votes to redraw the electoral map, but Gingrich would make that unlikely. His weaknesses tend to compound Trump’s - rhetoric that offends the snowflakes, high negatives. People who might vote against Hillary might also see Trump as just another politician with Newt by his side.

I am neutral on Newt but I think Trump will go with a woman/minority.

I’m on board for that but I think Chief of Staff would be a better position for Newt.

After 8 years of Trump, Newt would be 80 years old running for office. 88 at the end of two terms were he to live that long.

Newt could say (not swear) to be veep just in Trump’s first term, in order to get things fixed. Then Trump could choose a younger person to be veep, looking toward continuing Trump’s policies and legacy.

Then picking Newt could work. I love Newt! He is brilliant, but we all know he can get lost in the weeds with Nancy Pelosi.
