Donald Trump reveals foreign policy team in meeting with The Washington Post
Washington Post ^ | 3-21-2016 | Philip Rucker and Robert Costa

Posted on 03/21/2016 10:23:33 AM PDT by dlt

Donald Trump revealed part of his foreign policy advisory team and outlined an unabashedly non-interventionist approach to world affairs during a wide-ranging meeting Monday with The Washington Post's editorial board.

The Republican presidential front-runner listed for the first time five of the individuals who are part of a team, chaired by Sen. Jeff Sessions (Ala.), counseling him on foreign affairs and helping to shape his policies.

Yes, I know all about Yugoslavia / Tito and his “independence”. But it certainly wasn’t capitalist, which was my point when considering Hillary / Sanders vs. Trump.

I want Trump listening, but I want Trump deciding

Oh, Trump is deciding, you can bank on it. Nobody makes him mind up for him.

“What do you mean?”

My question was a rejoinder to the rabbit trail you started with the comment: “People don’t join the mafia to reform it.”

I should have just made a direct statement, like: your mafia comment is not a legitimate reason to dislike Mrs. Cruz and is certainly not something a serious elector would consider in evaluating Cruz for president.

I should also have said: no Trump supporter should ever bring up the words mafia, assault weapon ban, abortion, eminent domain, limited federal government, Clinton foundation, donations to liberal democrats, self-deportation of illegals, health care, shipping manufacturing production to Red China, First Amendment Rights, or bad hair day when advocating for Trump.

“Nobody makes him mind up for him.”

A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

What was shipping manufacturing production to China referring to?

You have quite a list of criticism concerning Donald Trump. Trump has lived his life in view of the public for 30 years so there are many things that we know about him. Throughout most of his life he has been a business man, not a politician or lawyer or philosopher. His time has been spent growing his businesses which has taken most of his time and energy. Now in his more mature years he has taken on the role of running for the presidency. There is a lot more ammunition that can be used against Trump because he has been in the public eye so much and is a colorful character.

We do not know nearly as much about Ted Cruz. We didn’t even know that he was born in Canada until Trump brought it up. This is a major thing and a constitutional lawyer should have known it would be a problem but he went ahead and ran for president anyway. He didn’t mention it to anyone. This was not fair to us the voters because we were not given the right to know about this. He was not being considerate of us when he failed to let us know. He knew of the problems that the Obama birth certificate issue caused but he kept it a secret.

What has Cruz been doing for the past 20 years? His life has been lived away from public scrutiny. He spoke as a lawyer or a politician in a public and lawyerly way. We don’t have many off the cuff comments from 20 or 30 years ago to use against him in a gotcha way. Because no one knew much about Cruz until he ran for the Senate, Cruz can keep unflattering things away from the public view while working on sculpting the image that he wants to portray as the perfect conservative with the perfect life.

I don’t trust the guy. I will take Trump with his many public imperfections over Cruz the mystery man. Something that is very troubling is the way that he plays up religion. The way he speaks as if he has the “anointing” of God almighty. Who is he to presume to have God’s favor? Cruz made a very big first impression when he got into the senate, he sort of swept everybody off their feet. I too was very impressed with him, but the way he handled the TPP issue made my antennae go up. I know that these kinds of issues are what the establishment are really interested in, not side issue like abortion or guns. It’s all about their money.

When Trump talked about putting up the wall, this is what I was waiting to hear. Illegal immigration and trade is what drives the unholy alliance between the Democrats and Republicans. They each have something to gain from these issues. I used to think that George W. Bush was a good guy but now I don’t because of his betrayal of the American people concerning illegal immigration. I was furious with his betrayal of border agents Ramos and Compean. Didn’t Bush say once that Jesus was his favorite teacher? Lip service. When you betray your countrymen for personal gain you are not doing the Lord’s work.

I have followed the illegal immigration problem for 20 years and came to realize that it is at the intersection of everything that is corrupt in the United States. I have seen politicians talk around this issue by using code phrases like “immigration reform”. Reform is a weasel word that confuses people into thinking that the politicians actually want to solve the problem when they are the ones who have been causing the problem. Most of the time the politicians avoided talking about the issue of illegal immigration. They knew how the people felt and they just tried avoiding it as much as possible.

When Trump came on the scene he just talked about building the wall, no dancing like a ballerina around the issue. He was blunt, I like that. Cruz is too studied and in love with his own rhetoric.

“What was shipping manufacturing production to China referring to?”

Every China-made Trump tie sold in America is a market signal - move American production of ties off-shore.

Your long post was thoughtful. You supported your opinions. We need more of that on this site.

But you got enough details wrong to lead you to support the wrong candidate for president (if you want to elect a conservative).

Trump is not a conservative.

You say Trump has not been a politician most of his life. Trump has been running for president for the past 16 years.

You say Trump talks of building a wall. He does talk. But he will walk away from his vow to build the wall faster than he walked away from his vows to his first two wives.

Cruz has swam upstream on social trends. Trump never has. Being vulgar is not the same as blunt talk or politically incorrect advocacy.

Your point about Bush and Ramos and Compean - right on target. I agree and add that we have seen enough of the Bush dynasty. Trump's impeachment talk was just loose talk however.

Cruz has accepted the backing and money of Neil Bush—we are back where we started.

If Trump’s selling of ties made in China is a signal to send the tie manufacturers to China it is about 15 years too late. Most of our clothing is made in China now. I live near an old clothing and shoe manufacturing city, the factories are all now apartments or offices.

“If Trump’s selling of ties made in China is a signal to send the tie manufacturers to China it is about 15 years too late.”

How could it be anything but a price signal to the remaining - yes, some remain - U.S. tie manufacturers.

The same could be said for automobile and air conditioning manufacturers which Trump has promised to force to return to the U.S. But with Trump's cozy, profitable relationships with Red Chinese sweat shops, where is his credibility?

What is needed is someone that talks like Trump confronting people that act like Trump.

“Cruz has accepted the backing and money of Neil Bush—we are back where we started.”

I'm not sure where “we” started but I will say: Cruz wants Jeb Bush voters. And Kasich voters. And Rubio voters. And the supporters of Carson,Gilmore, Christie, Fiorina, Santorum, Paul, Huckabee, Pataki, Graham, Jindal, Walker, and Perry.

And, yes, Cruz wants to get the support of Trump voters and Clinton voters and Sanders voters. That's just the way politics works but a constitutional conservative will not compromise principles and give donations to the Clintons to get her support or the support of Clinton voters.

If Trump secures the nomination, he will be going hard for the support of Cruz and the Cruz voters - at least until he is assured of 50 percent of the vote plus one. Plus still more to be able to claim a “mandate.”

And that is the way it works for Cruz. And for Trump.

Most of the clothing factories have moved to China or other countries years ago. You can’t come up with a factory in the USA when they have been closed for years and are either empty buildings with broken windows or mill buildings that have been put to other uses. I live in Massachusetts and I see it all around. My parents worked in the mills, most of the people of my ethnic group as well are other groups worked in the mills for a century but now most of those jobs are gone and they started disappearing in the 1970s.

Do you hold your nose when you use that phrase *constitutional conservative*? How does a constitutional conservative run for the presidency when he was born in Canada and he knows that he cannot be president?

Trump doesn’t believe that so you don’t have to repeat it.

When Trump follows through on his empty threat to challenge Cruz’s eligibility in court, get back to me.

Couldn’t somebody put glass back in the windows, or even build a new plant?

If you don’t think Trump can bring the jobs back like he says with his really great deals, say it now.

They are not going to rehabilitate a factory building just to make ties for Trump, don’t be silly. I worked in a shoe factory and while working there I learned that the company that I worked for made shoes for national store brands as well as their own brand. The factory that makes Trumps ties may manufacture other brands of ties as well. I have heard other business people complain that it is difficult to have things made in this country because so many factories are now over seas.

By the way, what is your position on free trade? Did you support the China deals as well as NAFTA?

“You know that Cruz was born in Canada. That creates a problem.”

It does not create a legal problem for Cruz.

It creates an opportunity for Trump to make up stuff and to have it repeated uncritically by some of his supporters.

When Trump follows through on his empty threat to have the courts throw Cruz off the ballot, let me know.
