Trump’s Softened Stance on Visas Alarms Some Immigration Critics
New York Times ^ | March 4 2016 | Julia Preston

Amid the sparring and free-flying insults of Thursday night’s Republican presidential debate, Donald J. Trump said he wanted to expand the number of visas available for highly skilled immigrants.

His remarks caused shock among some supporters who have seen Mr. Trump as a bulwark against an influx of foreigners taking American jobs.

In an immigration blueprint he released in August, in the early days of his surprising charge toward the Republican nomination, Mr. Trump said the visas for highly skilled workers were part of what he called “disastrous” immigration policies that had “destroyed our middle class.” He gave detailed proposals on fixing the visa program to protect Americans.

But on Thursday, responding to a question from Megyn Kelly of Fox News, one of the debate moderators, Mr. Trump said: “I’m changing. I’m changing. We need highly skilled people in this country, and if we can’t do it, we’ll get them in. But, and we do need in Silicon Valley, we absolutely have to have.”

Who should we vote for and why ?

You should vote for who you think will represent your principles.

I'll vote for who I think will represent my principles.

For YEARS conservatives here on FreeRepublic have bemoaned the fact that we never have a chance to vote for a conservative candidate. The establishment always chooses a moderate candidate for us, and we get our asses handed to us because there's no clear difference between our candidate and theirs.

For once, we have a CLEAR difference. Cruz is solidly conservative. Always has been. Always will be.

Trump is Trump. He'll build the wall! (unless he won't). He'll abolish Obamacare (unless socialized medicine keeps people from dying in the streets). Etc. Etc. Etc.

He'll assassinate good people's character for personal gain.

We have a chance to vote for the conservative we've been clamoring for.

That's why.

Trump hires foreigners over Americans!

Not enough for you, he brings them to the U.S. under terms that they work for him, or nobody, they work at his price, no negotiation and when he's finished with them - whoosh, back home they go!

Trump's for the little guy, in a pig's eye!

Many people are way too eager to get back at liberal, pc, Marxists, so they grab onto Trump's life raft and I fear they will find out too late, way too late, that what he claimed was only his opening bid, he'll take a lower, much lower deal. He's the ultimate "deal maker," at least according to him.

If you like his deal, why he's even got that land in Florida (in the swamps) to sell you!

Suckers born every minute for guys like Trump.

You have no idea.
Waste of time if you refused to understand.
Megyn asked wrong question.

H1B visa and O-1 Visa and Green Card is very different thing.

O-1 visa is for very high skilled worker. After this visa one can apply for immigration. Immigration means Green Card.

H1b visa is not immigration, it is work permit. One has to go to native country to get visa stamped and issued based on job offer.

I’m a captive of the Trump cult of personality ... having said that, I have to admit that occasionally, yep, he does these hair-raising things, like a gray squirrel darting into traffic then running back under the wheels—unscathed.

It’s almost as if he’s learning or being progammed, and wants to parrot back what he’s supposed to say.
He seems to me sincere in wanting learn his lessons ....

But yeah, sometimes he is like the guy from back east who wants to be shown how to milk (a bull). All you can do is steer him to bossie and cross your fingers, I suppose.

Kris Kobach has lost his greatest supporters!

So sorry for the guy. Hopefully, Trump convinced him he'll be his Attorney General cause he'll not get a bigger bite in Kansas.

Kobach failed in his run to be Third District Representative, and other offices but a sizable group of strong pro-life, pro-family supporters stood by him, donated to him and help raise money for him. That money and voters have dried up and blown away with the wind now.

Cruz is not a true Conservative ...he supports TPP and open borders ... I will give you credit however , you are the first person to attempt to answer my question about who we should vote for and why ... every other Trump detractor is a coward that just throws insults at Trump and his supporters ...

Oh he has my vote no question, I love what he says and also what’s written on his website. I just have studied both enough to know that he doesn’t know what’s on his website all that well, even about his signature issue of immigration. It’s not that much text, an hour or two of study and he’d have it committed to memory. Wish he would, but hey, you’re right, there’s no perfect candidate.

Oh good grief. Get over it. The last two debates we have heard nothing but Cruz and Rubio pimping their websites.

Think about it. Have you heard Cruz say anything but platitudes and Rubio attacking Trump?

Nope. Nada. They say Trump doesn’t have specifics, but I have not heard a darned thing from Cruz or little Marco.

You can shout I’m a “constitutional conservative” till the cows come home.... big deal.

Okay, right from the Cruz fundraiser letter:

"Balance the budget, abolish the IRS, get rid of ObamaCare, and remove oppressive federal policies from the backs of job creators."

But wait, there's more:

"Secure the border, protect our citizens from terrorists, Destroy ISIS, Stand with our allies in Israel. Uphold the individual Rights of the people, born and unborn. These rights are enshrined in the Constitution, but they are granted by God and must not be violated by politicians."

There's a start for you and you don't even have to click on his website.

even though he spoke very clearly, saying he was "changing".

This is why Trump is not my first choice for POTUS. Too many inconsistencies.

In Detroit debate Trump said he would get rid of EPA- but on Iowa he said he'd use EPA to enforce higher Ethanol standards than Obama's.

Not sure what he would do as POTUS. I'm guessing he'd be moderate in governing. It's odd that conservatives are backing him over Cruz. I don't get it.
