Adams lost much of his perspective insight after he left Pac bell. As a former bell employee, you had to be there to appreciate the humor in the bureaucracy.

I like "Catbert". Having dealt with my share of co-workers who are evil just because they can be, he has that character nailed. Actually, anyone who has worked in an office for any length of time, should see plenty of humor in his cartoons.

"The Dilbert Principle" should be required reading for all Business Administration majors. Would be an excellent weed-out, as people with PHB (Pointy Haired Boss) tendencies, wouldn't understand and would fail the course.

Funny he stayed on for a bit while doing Dilbert.

He said there was a little "tension" in the office due to the lampooning being so obvious to fellow employees. His manager finally had the "fish or cut bait" discussion. PacBell or your cartooning career. Adams decided he liked the cartoon world better. That was a good decision in the long term. PacBell IT was decimated by some hired guns who sought to cut costs by eliminating large swatch of the department. Based on my damage assessment, I decided it was time for me to move on too. The 5th largest IT department on earth was shredded. There was no compelling reason to stay. My current employer hand carried an offer. It was an easy decision.

There were several big companies on Camino Ramon that were the source of material for Adams. They were all implementing the same business fads at the same time. Pacific Bell was probably the worst at it.

could you identify any of the characters he had put into his cartoons as other employees? was it obvious or were they just generic employee types?

I did recognize some of the managers. One in particular was in my upper management line. I was a D55 technical manager working out of the San Diego Trade Street data center. Adams worked in the San Ramon building where my project management was located after moving from 120 Montgomery (downtown SF). My projects included PREMIS/LAC,SOAC/LFACS, CSFT, Quick Service, COSMOS hardware replacement and MIZAR hardware replacement. I spent much of the Summer of 84 standing up new SOAC/LFACS systems in the Hayward data center.

The infamous Leadership Development fad AKA LDS (or more frequently LSD) was a favorite object of derision. The DSSD (Data Structured System Design) was foisted upon us too. My cohort in crime, David St Pierre, was a big help in pushing PacBell toward TCP/IP (upgrading from our uucp network). Some of the network engineers were trying to force the 7 level ISO garbage on us. I have yet to see broadly interoperating versions of FTAM.

I don't miss dodging the attack swans that hung around near the entrance of the San Ramon building.

I used to read Dilbert.

And then he had a line about Asok is "radicalized" because everyone thinks he is a terrorist.

It is all everyone one else's fault. Coming right after San Bernidino it was in very poor taste at the least.

In Dilbert the boss is incompetent. The honest engineer is naive. And the savvy people are all evil to one degree or another...

In a way. More precisely he does comical exaggeration of real frustrations experienced in the high tech corporate world.

If you're using services others are paying for, then your own conscience should make that decision - you have no trouble having folks that disagree with you paying your way.

Act all self-righteous all you want but don't be surprised if the mirror looks back at you with an expression and understanding that you don't like.
