Against Trump Fatalism
The Weekly Standard ^ | February 24,2016 | WILLIAM KRISTOL

Posted on 02/24/2016 12:09:03 PM PST by Hojczyk

And so we are now being treated to a wave of Donald Trump fatalism. Yes, he's defied expectations in a pretty remarkable way. Yes, he's won three of the first four GOP contests. Yes, he's ahead in the polls in the states coming up. Yes, he has an easier path to victory than any other candidate.

But only four states about 1.2 million people have actually cast ballots. Trump has won about a third of the votes cast; Cruz and Rubio have each won a bit over a fifth. Trump leads in delegates with 79 out of the 110 selected less than seven percent of those he needs to win the nomination. He trails Cruz in the biggest of the Super Tuesday states, Texas, and while Trump will almost certainly take the most delegates on March 1, it's unclear whether he'll win more like half or two-thirds of them. Even if he wins two-thirds, the March 15 winner-take-all states of Ohio, Florida, and Illinois will be fiercely contested.

And this is all before further debates, before any sustained television advertising assault on Trump, while the other candidates are still (foolishly) sniping at each other instead of taking on Trump. And in a circumstance where the frontrunner has unusual vulnerabilities.

Compared to Rubio?

Compared to Cruz?

There’s no intelligent argument there

People are so silly to think that a man who created all that he has, on an education and discipline from Wharton, a multi billion dollar fortune, and everything since, including being and remaining so high in the polls, can be gained by inheriting money from ones father thirty years prior, but that is just silly

People who will vote for Trump are much less likely to vote for Cruz or Rubio than Cruz or Rubio's supporters are to vote for Trump

You have any evidence to back up that claim? I can see where MANY conservatives would refuse to vote for Rubio, however right here on FR it has been demonstrated time and again that Trump supporters WILL vote for Cruz should Cruz somehow prevail and win the nomination.

It is the more rabid Cruzers who declare and proclaim that they will never vote for Trump, if their guy doesn't get the nod, they'll take their little hockey balls and go home.

To Canada.

Thanks very much, DoughtyOne!

These 2 month + FReepathons are ridiculous and shameful.

Were every regular user to donate $20.00 EVERY FReepathon would be over and done within a matter of DAYS, not even WEEKS!

As it is, ONLY .03 - .05 percent (3% - 5%) actually Donate.

Utterly shameful.

People are procrastinators. They put things off.

They’ve become accustomed to seeing the Freepathons go for 2.5 months. They reason they have time.

That needs to stop at this point.

It’s time to finish it off so we can have a break before the next one.

Glad to help out. I value the forum quite a bit.

Undisciplined jerks would never win a presidential primary, much less three of them in a row, with double-digit leads.

Recheck your math.

Bill Kristol could be productively fed into a plastic shredder. This guy is a flaming turd who should have been laughed out of his position a decade ago. He’s basically a Karl Rove of conservatism.

I don't believe Cruz supporters are strongly anti-Trump, especially given that Cruz, more than any of the other Republican candidates, has tried not to attack Trump. On free republic, for example, the pro-Trump posters have been much more scathing about Cruz than the Cruz posters have been about Trump. Also, most Republicans detest HRC and will not vote for her. Those are my reasons for believing that Cruz and Rubio supporters will vote for Trump if Trump ends up being the nominee.

stanne - Trump has no discipline. ("...punch in the face...Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that?...Blood coming out of her... wherever...I like people who weren't captured...if Ivanka weren't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her...--- there's much more!)

No, Trump has no self-control. He's erratic and acts on his irrational instincts. He does not have presidential timbre. He is as undisciplined as a 4th grader.

Your "silly" statement about his popularity (...high in the polls...) - Do you seriously think that a huge following makes something right or even good? Really?

TTTIT.

The Band wagon (vox populi) fallacy must not have been taught in a lot of philosophy classes.

“Hiro Onoda - Onoda Hiro?, March 19, 1922 - January 16, 2014) was an Imperial Japanese Army intelligence officer who fought in World War II and a Japanese holdout who did not surrender in 1945.

After Onoda spent nearly 30 years holding out in the Philippines, his former commander traveled from Japan to personally issue orders relieving him from duty in 1974.[1][2] He held the rank of second lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Army.”

FRiend, I don’t know what area of FR you’ve been roaming around, but if you haven’t seen the persistent attacks, rage, irrational rants and bombast directed by Cruz supporters at Trump, I gently suggest you need to check out this week’s specials at your local Pearle Vision Center.

Hostile comments directed at Cruz by Trump supporters are in the majority of cases, appropriate and proportional responses to the toxic attacks spewed out by Cruz fanatics 24 hours a day.

I would still vote for Cruz if he were to somehow prevail and secure the nomination, but unfortunately for Cruz, that isn’t going to happen.

So now it’s Krystal along with Levin, Rush, Beck and countless others being thrown under the bus that Freepers once respected....no doubt there will be more added.

I will only vote for Trump pending on who he announces as potential cabinet members.....and that’s more than a stretch at this point. Will have to see if he even wins the nomination...I vote Cruz.

Show me where I’ve thrown either Rush or Levin under the bus? I respect and admire both and I listen to their programs. I’ve had several disagreements with Levin but I love him nonetheless.

I long ago gave up on Kristol (at least I know how to spell his name) because he always picks the wrong candidates and is often mistaken on the issues. Beck I’ve never respected; he’s insane.

Pick on someone else, caw; you, as always, don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.
