Seriously, what is the deal with the gibberish that substitutes for apostrophes when cutting and pasting text? Why can't it be fixed? It makes many posts virtually unreadable. Sorry for the rant, but I have not seen it discussed to any degree and it just seems to be accepted. Can someone please explain this issue and why there is no resolution?
Excerpt out as few quotations as possible. Take the time to manually replace the other troublesome punctuation.
Or apparently there’s a program somewhere to do it for you.
It was supposed to have been fixed some weeks ago and it was improved so that not ALL apostrophes and hyphens came up as gibberish, but some still do.
I go through my article and replace them manually until it’s resolved. A pain, I know but I hate reading stuff without the corrections.
Fix is here:

If you are going to copy/paste the “smart quotes” have to be fixed to dumb ones.
Why should I have to manually do this? That is annoying. It wasn’t this way before, so why now?
If you’re the one doing the cut and paste, delete the apostrophes and reenter them from your keyboard.
It’s a conspiracy by the Euro’s. Many of the weird symbols are the EURO monetary symbol. The funny curved “E” with the two lines through it. Euro conspiracy. ;-)
IIRC, this started last November and Jim and John are working on the problem.
Here's a temporary fix many are using.
That is not a fix. That is using a 3rd party site to fix a bug with this one. A fix would be to patch the bug.
Been happening here for about six months or so. It does the same on my email. So, it’s not just this site.
The problem is months and months old which the admins have been claiming they are working on since it began.
Has something to do with how characters are interpreted by specific pieces of code. That it has not been fixed after all this time, leads me to believe nothing is actually being done, or more likely that fixing it will create more problems elsewhere.
The only solution might be for a complete transition to something like Wordpress - which if you don’t know, is actively maintained externally and can be automatically updated to fix issues, leaving the admins free to deal with zotters and the like.
No, it hasn’t. It’s a relatively new bug.
Then don’t use it and you are not welcome to understanding it isn’t an issue here, but with the programs used to write the original article.
Do a bit or research for smart quotes and straight/dumb quotes and all the stuff one needs to do to use them or not use them.
Oh...and you are not welcome! Sheesh
It is VERY annoying, especially to those of us who are not particularly savvy with technology.
I find I don’t read the articles as thoroughly, as it’s a pain in the neck to decipher through all of this crap. The other thing I notice are lots of diamonds with question marks in them.
Perhaps some of the Freepathon $88,000 goal money will be used to correct this. We shouldn’t have to carefully review and edit every apostrophe in our posts.
It’s obvious that nobody is working on this problem. It doesn’t take months to fix a simple software bug like this. If FR’s current web developer can’t fix it, he should be sacked—sorry.
Don’t count on it—I don’t know where the money goes, but it does not go to data or development costs...
Cruz’s fault.
