It's a good thing Trump wants to rebuild our manufacturing base, because it truly has taken a hit. We've turned from a nation of builders to burger flippers.
To put in perspective just how bad things have gotten - there were more Americans employed in manufacturing in the months leading up to Pearl Harbor than there are today, despite the fact that the population then was a fraction of what it is today.
In that time, there was 1 person employed in manufacturing for every 10.6 people in the overall population compared to 1 person employed in government for every 26.1 people in the overall population.
Oh how things have changed. As CNS News reported:
Those employed by government in the United States in August of this year outnumbered those employed in the manufacturing sector by almost 1.8 to 1, according to data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
There were 21,995,000 employed by federal, state and local government in the United States in August, according to BLS. By contrast, there were only 12,329,000 employed in the manufacturing sector.
The 2015 Federal budget spends an unprecedented $3.7 trillion which leaves us with a deficit of over half a trillion dollars.
Trump's plan to restore the manufacturing base consists of placing tariffs on Chinese goods and reducing our relatively high corporate tax rate which incentivizes businesses to set up overseas.
There's a huge opportunity to kill two birds with one stone here. Shrink the government, and when people ask where those former government employees are going to work we'll have some nice manufacturing jobs waiting for them.

WHEN are conservatives going to wake up? This situation is only possible people of massive debt and massive spending by Fed.gov. Such massive debt is ONLY possible when they have a centrally-controlled, unbacked, printed, fiat money supply. The Federal Reserve IS the foundation of left-progressive government.
Return the US to a free-market currency, out of control of any politician or central planner - and only then will you have a chance to kill progressivism.
The Arsenal of Democracy was America’s 1940s manufacturing base.
Now if there’s a war we will be calling China and asking them to pretty please make some weapons for us.

It’s well and good to understand affairs Constitutional.
It’s not so well and good when the number of people actually willing to take the idea seriously is continually dwindling. There has been so much uncontrolled court cruft on the Constitution that it might as well have been demoted to Good Idea. And nothing short of amendment could stop this; way too much inertia, way too many vested interests. And this is not something that would be in any president’s bailiwick, at least not the cautious spoken Cruz, though if Trump really got on fire about an issue you might hear thunder from his bully pulpit about a constitutional amendment being needed.
I hate to admit, but after working in private sector for nearly 25 years, I switched to a quasi government job. I retired at age 56 after working there a dozen years. I have lifetime healthcare and retirement income from that government job. The pension from private sector job is a joke. It barely pays for cable and internet.

Agree 100%. But majority of voters have no clue. They keep voting for the cheap labor express pushing career politicians, who are all without exception controlled by the rich donor class.
When we do things, we have to fully consider the ramifications.
So many times we do something and don’t consider what happens when the Democrats propose the same thing.
We open up the can of worms that is Constitutional Amendments, and we’re going to be facing the Second immediately.
I think we need to address some things, but with our Congress today, wow. It would almost be suicide.
40 year old CEO We need higher thinking. Mexicans will do a job close to as good for 1/3rd of our labor cost.
His mother on social security. I paid in. I deserve paid out.
40 year old can pay for his own mother and not take it out of our hides, in fact he should be responsible for the additional debt incurred by the rest of us PERSONALLY.
Nice post.
The number one requirement I have is honesty.
I can handle a person having a lot of issues as long as they are honest and don’t lie to me.
I am a contractor for a government agency. In my previous position, productivity was the important issue. I switched jobs, and now I am stuck in this weird zone, where productivity has too many obstacles. I hope it changes, or I will need to bail.
UUUUH; I don’t think BFAC is a guy, the screen name kinda says it all don’t ya think?
I had to buy a harmonic balancer puller for my Ford truck to do some work on it.
The puller was made in Red Chinkland and the bolt holes for the balancer were metric!
True, but when you figure out why a massive military force that is stationed all over the globe is needed to protect your freedom — while your own government usurps that freedom right here at home — then fill me in on the details.
So Trump's plan to restore the manufacturing base is basically to make sure Americans pay more for their goods. If he places a 15% or 20% or 25% tariff on imported goods then my cost for them goes up by that amount regardless of whether they are manufactured in China or Tennessee. I'm having a hard time seeing the logic in that or the benefit to me.
