Billionaire Donald Trump on Friday went on the offensive against U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, putting an end to the most closely watched alliance in the GOP race for the White House.
Speaking in Iowa, Trump launched his first attack on Cruz by zeroing in on the senator's opposition to ethanol standards, an issue dear to Iowan hearts.
"Heâs got to come a long way because heâs right now for the oil," Trump said at a rally in Des Moines. "I understand it. Oil pays him a lot of money. Heâs got to be for oil, right? The oil companies give him a lot of money, but Iâm with you.â
Later in the rally, Trump suggested Cruz's stance on ethanol subsidies could be a stumbling block in the first-in-the-country caucus state, where the senator has been rising in the polls.
"If Ted Cruz is against ethanol, how does he win in Iowa? Because thatâs very anti-Iowa," Trump said.
Trump's criticism of Cruz on ethanol echoes that of America's Renewable Future, an advocacy group in Iowa that has been hammering Cruz for his opposition to the Renewable Fuel Standard. Cruz's campaign has countered that he opposes all energy subsidies, not just those that favor ethanol producers but also ones that benefit the oil industry.

Whoops!
making a rhetorical hypothetical point.......sorry to be operating so far above your head.
“...sorry to be operating so far above your head.”
I have noticed that you are never far away from looking down from your supposed superior heights. I am not convinced. There was nothing whatever that was “hypothetical” about your point. That was Coulter’s angle, which you used to get across your point.
You Cruz-bots are prone to get together and comfort each other with snarky comments about Trump supporters. When I get together with friends and we talk about supporting Trump, Cruz is never mentioned. We talk about the issues Trump talks about. That is why we support Trump.
Dude, you started this and stepped into a steaming pile that I simply exposed for you. Not only did you start it, but you got personal right off the bat. Then I finished you off intellectually, and I’ll add that if you’re not man enough to finish, do not start.
Boy, you don’t get the irony, do you?
I submit that I understand it way beyond most......present company included.
“Then I finished you off intellectually, and Iâll add that if youâre not man enough to finish, do not start.”
You are delusional. I just finished.
...and you’ve yet to even know what we were talking about....
If you understand more than most, tell me the point that I was trying to make o sage.
Go Cruz, F ethanol!
Ted Cruz is more like Superman than ROBIN, for crap sake.
Yeah, but its OK for Trump to bash proven conservatives by using left-wing talking points because they "had it coming" by daring to disagree with Trump. Trump fans told me so.
I watched the entire speech bumper to bumper.
This is about the 4th story using the words "attack" and that just didn't occur.
See for yourself.
You have not replied, so I will state my meaning anyway.
There is no such thing as a perfect candidate. If you think there is, then you are setting yourself up for disappointment. I am very aware that Trump has weaknesses, but I support him anyways, for reasons I have explained at length in other posts. Cruz also has weaknesses, like it or not, and to insult people who support Trump despite his imperfections as a candidate while treating yours as immaculate is the best way to hurt both you and him.
Which post did I not reply to? I must've missed it. But you are greatly mischaracterizing my take if you think I'm holding out for some perfect candidate. You are also delusional if you think Trump is mostly a good conservative who is just not quite perfect. Hell, he attacked Cruz from the crony left YESTERDAY on ethanol for God's sake.
Ethanol is THE QUINTESSENTIAL government crony issue, that enriches a few cronies, one area of the country, and lobbyists - while screwing every other American. This is not an imperfection in the past, this is a big stinky pile right now.
And on and on I could go.....I'll support Trump over every Dem and most Republicans, but don't insult my intelligence by indicating any kind of perfection litmus test. It just doesn't fly. Not with a man who's been in every party and every direction on every issue for 4 decades.
Ethanol does not get a subsidy that ended in 2011.
Get back on your meds!
The mandate still exists. As a practical matter, there is no difference to the consumer.
I am not a big fan of ethanol, if the mandate goes to 15% I'm screwed. I can live with 10% but no higher!
