Archaeologists To Ben Carson: Ancient Egyptians Wrote Down Why The Pyramids Were Built
Forbes ^ | 11/5/15 | Kristina Killgrove ,

Yesterday, November 4, marked 93 years to the day that the tomb of King Tutankhamen was opened in Egypt, revealing spectacular artifacts and a magnificent mummy of the boy king. The celebration was somewhat marred, at least here in the U.S., by a leading Republican candidate for president, former neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who confirmed a statement he'd made in 1998 - that he believes the Egyptian pyramids were grain silos, not tombs.

The collective reaction from archaeologists and historians, who have command of literally centuries' worth of research into the artifacts and literature of the ancient Egyptians, is... Wait, what now?

Carson said in his 1998 talk at Andrews University, a Seventh-Day Adventist-affiliated university, "And when you look at the way that the pyramids were made, with many chambers that are hermetically sealed, they'd have to be that way for various reasons. And various of scientists [sic] have said, 'Well, you know there were alien beings that came down and they have special knowledge and that's how, you know, it doesn't require an alien being when God is with you.'"

Just to be clear, no scientists think that aliens built the pyramids. There is a small but vocal contingent of people who believe in pseudoarchaeological explanations, but archaeologists have dismantled those harebrained theories at every possible turn. (See, for example, my piece, "What Archaeologists Really Think about Ancient Aliens, Lost Colonies, and Fingerprints of the Gods.") So while it may look good for Carson to deny alien involvement in pyramid building, he also attributes them to a white guy rather than, well, the ancient Egyptians.

“. . . he placed in every city the food from its own surrounding fields.”

May I ask what precludes pyramids from being located in cities?

Look, I don’t have a firm understanding of how and why the pyramids were built. But I do have a firm opinion that Ben Carson’s thoughts on the matter have nothing to do with how he would conduct himself in the office to which he aspires. They do, however, reveal a shallowness of public discourse that is beneath the dignity of this forum.

I worry about someone who is ignorant about history, yet believes he is competent to lead the most powerful and important country in the world.

The sad thing is it’ll be something stupid like this that’ll eliminate Carson from the race while major scandals dog the Democrats and they’ll be immune.

People believe weird stuff. It happens and is pretty irrelevant to the job that these people are running for.

I feel like I’m back in school. I’ve likely read more about the pyramids in the past day than I have in the past 5 decades.

Dr. Carson’s views don’t mean a Tinker’s Dam to me.

"The best match for that is Ted Cruz, but his poll numbers aren’t making me optimistic. He’d be my #1 choice if his numbers gained traction."

What do poll numbers have to do with your choice? There's no prize for picking the most popular person. If Cruz is the right candidate, then he is, no matter how many other people agree.

this is funny I was just watching something on Tutankhamun last night where the gist of it was about how everything in his tomb with slapdash and it wasn’t like he was ever intended to be in it... his coffin is tomb his mask everything was recycled from other people.

The Great Pyramid was apparently built in Moses’ time . The first pyramid, the Step Pyramid, coincides with the time of Joseph. I do not believe the Step Pyramid was built with Stones and could have been erected in a short period of time.

My point is that any Christian belief can be and often is the subject of worldly ridicule.

I guess now Carson can do like Obama: “Egyptians, you did not build that”

Considering the bs that they pushed about Pharaoh Redjedef for almost 100 years I find myself yawning in their general direction.

And they never have explained why, out of all the tombs that the Egyptians built the Pyramids were the only ones they never wrote on.

Poor choice of words on my part. Ted Cruz is my #1 choice despite the polls and as long as he is on the ballot, I will vote for him.

What I was implying with poll numbers was simply that I am concerned he will not be on the ballot until his numbers get higher.

I don’t know, read lots of tantalizing stuff about who it really was that really built the Pyramids? Not sure it’s up to “scientists” to come up with the dope? Maybe Hillary could consult with Eleanor and check to see it she can get the straight scoop straight from the world down under? She can make her precise report in the Dems next upcoming debated.

Funny, I didn’t see him mention the race of god.
Where did that come from? Oh, wait, never mind.

The Egyptians actually used more limestone blocks on the earlier than on the later pyramids. Simple reason: they were running short of limestone toward the end of their pyramid construction era.

Best estimate on building time for the step pyramid is from ten to fifteen years. Here are some details:

‘[The step pyramid] started off as a mastaba tomb — a flat-roofed structure with sloping sides — and, through a series of expansions, evolved into a 197-foot-high (60 meters) pyramid, with six layers, one built on top of the other. The pyramid was constructed using 11.6 million cubic feet (330,400 cubic meters) of stone and clay. The tunnels beneath the pyramid form a labyrinth about 3.5 miles (5.5 kilometers) long.

The complex
The pyramid is at the center of a complex 37 acres (15 hectares) in size. This complex is surrounded by a recessed limestone wall that contains 13 fake doorways as well as the real colonnade entrance on the southeast side.
A temple lies on the north side of the pyramid along with a statue of the king. The statue is surrounded by a small stone structure known as a “serdab,” his eyes peeking out through a hole. To the south of the pyramid lies a great court, with an altar and stones identified as boundary markers.
A number of facade “dummy” buildings were constructed in the complex, including a series of chapels in the southeast as well as north and south pavilions on the east side of the pyramid. These structures would have served ritual purposes and, curiously, they appear to have been partly buried by their builders, notes Egyptologist Mark Lehner in his book “The Complete Pyramids.”’

Practicality as well as historical data would make it very dubious based on ordinary considerations. One would need a miracle of space to do that (as some believe possible for Noah’s Ark). And also, why aren’t these pyramids in cities which is where the bible says the grain was stored under Joseph? That is getting well into unverifiable prophetic claims. (I’m curious if this was in an Ellen White writing.)

I think that under Carson we would be likely to get the old food pyramids (no pun intended) back....

The tunnels beneath the pyramid form a labyrinth about 3.5 miles (5.5 kilometers) long.

The perfect location to store 7 years worth of grain. :-)
