Syria's Kurds Are Contemplating an Aleppo Alliance with Assad and Russia

10/9/2015 7:24:00 AM

Fabrice Balanche

..............Currently, the Syrian army still controls a third of Aleppo, which is connected to the rest of the government-controlled zone by a narrow road. But this corridor is being squeezed by the Daesh/ISIS on the east and al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra on the west. To win the battle for Aleppo, Assad will therefore need to cooperate with the Democratic Union Party (PYD), the Syrian franchise of the Turkish Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). The PYD is eager to connect its cantons around Kobane and Afrin and open a corridor to Sheikh Maqsoud, the Kurdish district of Aleppo. An October 1 al-Monitor interview with PYD leader Salih Muslim suggests that the group may be seeking a strategic alliance with Assad and Russia in order to achieve that goal.

Everyone in the middle east is lining up to cut a deal with Putin. Why?

Because they should.

Is Vlad trustworthy?

Compared to what—Obama? He’s fickle, and he’s nuts.

The USA had many chances to align themselves with the Kurds, but instead left them to twist in the wind.

The Syrian Kurds have a long history with the old USSR. The Kurds are mostly immune to the jihdists because they have been secularized under the Soviets (they are Marxist inspired resistance movement).

I forsee a collision between Russia and Turkey that could rend NATO useless.

A friend of mine deployed to the Kurdish region of Iraq during the 2003 war. He found the Kurkdish mindset to be very long term. In their minds they had been battling for hundreds of years, so a few decades of subjugation was preferable to anihilation. Getting rid of Saddam was simply a stepping stone to their ultimate goal, a unified and independent Kurdistan.

Now the Kurds are being attacked both by ISIS and the Turks. Aligning with the Russians and Syrians reduces threats to the Kurds in Syria, gives them an ally against ISIS, and may make the Turks reconsider bombing raids into Syria and Iraq against the PKK.

Before it’ over, the following ME countries will be in the Russian sphere: Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq (some or all), and Yemen. And the Palestinians (although not a country). Did I forget any?

Osama bin Laden knew the Middle East. He said the people always follow “the strong horse.” Currently, that would be Putin.

Turkey is angry at Russia for backing Assad so I don’t foresee that unless the Turkish military carries out a coup against the Islamists. Then the west would black list Turkey and drive it into Russia’s hands as happened in Egypt.

Thanks for your insight.

I don’t blame them a bit for their strategy. Obama has not been much of an ally, and anyone can see he’s a faithless friend going forward.

I hope this doesn’t become a replay of the 1914 Balkans, but the Kurds aren’t responsible for that. They are in a very difficult situation.

Turkey supports Saudi Arabia against Assad because the natural gas pipeline to Europe goes through Syria...and then through Turkey. The Turks get a piece of the Saudi action ($$$$$) if Assad is gone.

...unless the Turkish military carries out a coup against the Islamists...

It happened in Egypt. Is there any chance the real militaries of the various countries involved will get it together and destroy ISIS and other rebel groups? Then go back to their definable animosities.

Vlad isn’t trustworthy, but he has the power. You may be dealing with the devil, but you do that when the devil is holding all the trump cards.

If the Kurds align with Assad along with the Christians (aren't the Christians already/still with Assad?)- then we are basically left with the non-ISIS jihadists on the Obama team.

Yes we will be aligned or damned-near aligned with Al Qaeda.
