Brutal: Trey Gowdy Pens Scathing Letter to Top Benghazi Committee Democrat
Townhall.com ^ | October 9, 2015 | Guy Benson

Posted on 10/09/2015 9:06:10 AM PDT by Kaslin

This story was more or less lost in the noise of yesterday's palace intrigue, but it's too important to simply let lie.  Do yourself a favor and click through to Gowdy's letter before proceeding any further. Read the entire thing. It's extraordinary, on several levels: First, Gowdy summons his prosecutorial vigor to absolutely demolish the ranking Democrat on the House Select Committee on Benghazi.  Democrats have seized upon erstwhile Speaker-in-waiting Kevin McCarthy's ill-advised comments to try to shut down the panel's probe -- a continuation of their ongoing, partisan efforts to dismiss its focus as a "phony scandal" and to portray the investigation as a political witch hunt.  Gowdy has been unsparing in his rejection of McCarthy's since-abandoned characterization and unflagging in his defense of the committee's work.  In response to Democrat Elijah Cummings' endless attacks and accusations, the South Carolina Republican drops the hammer:

Cummings, Gowdy continues, has been acting on duties "not to the American public, but to your Democrat colleagues and to the administration, including former Secretary Clinton," adding that he's disappointed in the Democrat's "complete lack of interest in gathering any facts."  Again, read the whole thing. The letter goes on to ridicule Cummings for objecting to the release of some Clinton emails, noting that both Mrs. Clinton and Cummings himself have stated that all of the messages should be made public: "Only in Washington, DC can both the author of the emails and the ranking member of a committee call for the disclosure of all relevant emails and then complain that all relevant emails were disclosed."  To put a finer point on it, Gowdy announces his intention to release another tranche of Hillary's emails pertaining to Benghazi and Libya.  Several excerpts call into question the impartiality of the State Department's internal "Accountability Review Board" Benghazi investigation, but the biggest revelations expose the former Secretary of State's correspondence with Sidney Blumenthal.  Mr. Blumenthal, you may recall, is a Clinton confidante whose ethical reputation is so suspect that the Obama administration barred Hillary from hiring him at State.  But that didn't stop Hillary from relying on Blumenthal as an off-the-books purveyor of unvetted intelligence.  The New York Times reported several months ago that Blumenthal's ongoing relationship with Sec. Clinton was highly unusual: He was on the payroll of the Clinton Foundation while feeding Hillary private intel, which was frequently colored by his own separate financial interests.  The new batch of emails contains startling new details, summarized by the Weekly Standard's Stephen Hayes:

Breaking: #Benghazi Cmte says new documents show Sidney Blumenthal was seeking business in Libya & at least once Hillary Clinton helped him.— Stephen Hayes (@stephenfhayes) October 8, 2015

More from #Benghazi Cmte: HRC was not only soliciting info from Blumenthal, contrary to her claims, she was promoting his business interests— Stephen Hayes (@stephenfhayes) October 8, 2015

In one unsecure email from Blumenthal to Clinton, he appears to name a top CIA source in Libya. (Committee redacted this info). #Benghazi— Stephen Hayes (@stephenfhayes) October 8, 2015

Here's the relevant passage on the CIA asset:

Screen Shot 2015-10-09 at 7.36.33 AM

They exchanged extremely sensitive material between two unsecure servers. Remember, one of the reasons we know that Hillary Clinton did not hand over all work-related emails as claimed is that Blumenthal's emails were hacked.  Mrs. Clinton downplayed her relationship with Blumenthal after the Times story was published, stating that his messages were "unsolicited."  These emails blow all of that out of the water.  Hayes writes, "In a statement accompanying the letter, Gowdy makes some of his strongest accusations to date about the Obama administration's obstruction of the committee's work. 'These messages should have been made public when the State Department released Secretary Clinton’s other self-selected records on Libya and Benghazi, but there was a clear decision at the time to withhold this information from the American people and the Committee.'"  Gowdy alerts Cummings that the committee "plans on releasing these new emails" next week and plans on questioning Mrs. Clinton about their contents on October 22.  Stay tuned.

from page 10:

“Beyond the pure politics that were occurring at this time, perhaps more disturbing is that at the same time Blumenthal was pushing Secretary Clinton to war in Libya, he was privately pushing a busineess interest of his own in Libya that stood to profit from contracts with the new Libyan government—a government that would exist only after a successful U.S. intervention in Libya that deposed Qaddafi. This business venture was one he shared with Tyler Drumheller and Cody Shearer, the authors of the information sent to Secretary Clinton. It is therefore unsurprising that somebody who knew so little about Libya would suddenly become so interested in Libya and push an old friend in a powerful place to action—for personal profit.”

Their side throws people in jail who oppose the homo agenda. They fine them to destroy their livelihood. They use the IRS to intimidate conservatives during elections. They use executive orders to take away gun rights. They...

In our spare time after fully funding Obamacare and Planned Parenthood, our side pens scathing letters.

It’s obvious many of the commenters on this thread complaining about the ineffectiveness of “angry letters” have not actually read the angry letter.

It reveals a lot of new information and will hurt many on the dem side. Congressional committees can’t prosecute, but they can investigate and expose crimes.

We give Liberals "brutal" letters. They give us brutal beatings.

The purpose of the letter is to:

• lay out the grounds for a legal or procedural case against the wrongdoers,
• inform all parties on both sides of the dispute what the key points are,
• give the right side time to ramp up the next steps≤br≥• and give the wrongdoers a formal opportunity to change their ways.
The letter is excellent and comprehensive. The trouble is that in Boehner/McConnell GOP-e World, there will be no support, unity or follow-up. There will be denunciations of the right, accompanied by caving, wheedling and appeasing the enemies of the People.

Look up George Soros and “The Responsibility To Protect” theory.

Chelsea Clinton, the Clinton’s only child, had her wedding at a Soros estate.

Now, do you see who is pulling Clinton’s strings?

Quite true. See post 24 just above.

Trey pretended to be angry by drafting a stern letter and Elijah pretended to read it and tremble.
And the yahoos ate it up.

This is what I love about the rats. They put the dumbest members of their caucus on these committees for exactly this reason. To politicize hearings, knowing full well that their schtick will get more press than the actual problem.

Thank you, Toast. You get it.

Way too many dik-head, faux tough-guys on this thread who don't understand the first thing about criminal procedure all loudly holding forth on what is merely a demonstration of their collective ignorance.

They should try pissing on Clinton and Blumenthal and Cummings for a change, if they don't think Gowdy is pissing hard enough.

FReegards!

I read the excellent letter. This further confirms my suspicions that almost anyone that was or is in government service (RATs in particular in this case) is looking to skim a few dollars fro themselves. I don’t see how Hillary keeps her security clearance after this. That should disqualify her from seeking the office of president.

McCarthy really screwed things up.

His loose lips is forcing Gowdy to show some of his hand.

Also, Trey Gowdy HAD to write this letter. The democrats were trying to gain the upper hand in the media. This letter puts Cummings on notice that he is personally responsible for any further attempts to derail the hearings.

To all those Freepers who are trying to be cute (”another letter?”), Gowdy is clearly going for criminal INTENT. This requires a high level of proof. Without it, Clinton walks away with a charge of negligence, and she can simply claim “gee, I didn’t know, the rules are soooo complicated”

Blumenthal

Tyler Drumheller, former CIA officer, died Aug. 6th, 2015

Cody Shearer

Shearer — a man investigated by the State Department in the 1990s for falsely representing himself as an agent of the U.S. government while taking cash from a genocidal warlord

Shearer, a former tabloid journalist, became part of the Clinton machine after his brother-in-law was hired as deputy secretary of state during Bill Clinton’s first term. In the mid-90s, he traveled to Europe to negotiate the surrender of Radovan Karadzic, the Bosnian-Serb president responsible for the genocidal slaughter of thousands of Bosnian Muslims. Falsely claiming to be a State Department employee, Shearer told Karadzic’s family and associates he had the ear of his brother-in-law, Secretary of State Madeline Albright, and even President Clinton. He was paid at least $25,000 by the Serbs for his unsuccessful effort to reduce the charges against Karadzic before being officially warned by the State Department to cease and desist. The department later opened an investigation into his activities in the Balkans.

In 2011, Shearer teamed up with Blumenthal, another veteran Clinton confidante, in a shadowy scheme involving a private security contractor seeking to do business in post-revolutionary Libya. Blumenthal was advising the group while simultaneously sending intelligence reports directly to Clinton. E-mails previously leaked from Blumenthal’s account show that some of the information he sent was initially collected by Shearer.

Kathleen Willey was threatened in January 1998 by Cody Shearer, a Washington journalist and investigator with close ties to the Clinton administration, nearly had tragic repercussions here on Sunday night.

Though often described as a journalist, Shearer hasn’t written much since the 1980s. His work, like that of his father, Lloyd Shearer, the former editor of Parade magazine, was often gossipy and reputation-ruining. A series of columns the younger Shearer wrote on the sexual proclivities of former Texas senator John Tower sank his nomination for defense secretary in 1989.

Shearer’s career took a strange turn when the Clintons entered the White House in 1992. His entrée into the first family’s orbit was Strobe Talbott, Shearer’s brother-in-law, who had been a friend of Bill Clinton since the president’s days at Oxford. Talbott served as a deputy secretary in Bill Clinton’s State Department; his brother-in-law took a different route, allegedly working with Clinton enforcer Terry Lenzner to investigate and, at times, intimidate women who accused Bill Clinton of sexual harassment.

Although Shearer’s negotiations on behalf of the U.S. government were unauthorized, the Wall Street Journal reported that Strobe Talbott knew of his brother-in-law’s activities at least one year before the State Department did and asked him to stop. He only felt compelled to do so, according to the Journal, because Shearer was erroneously informing his Serbian contacts that the U.S. supported a plan to partition Bosnia, not because he was conducting shadow diplomacy with a genocidal warlord.

in early 2011, as a State Department-sanctioned revolution against the Qaddafi regime in Libya was picking up steam, longtime Clinton consigliere Sidney Blumenthal was sending “confidential” intelligence memos to Hillary Clinton. He was touting leaders of the Libyan rebel movement with whom he had business dealings and pushing for the hire of private military contractors while working as an adviser to Osprey Global Solutions, a contracting company seeking to do business in Libya.

Shearer was aiding Blumenthal in these “intelligence-gathering” efforts. In one e-mail message from May 2011, first published by Gawker in March, Shearer appears to be serving as the liaison between Blumenthal and “Grange,” the former Army general and CEO of Osprey, as they attempt to organize a small team of contractors to conduct an unspecified mission to the Libyan border from Tunisia. He is also in frequent contact with “K,” a Libyan named Khalifa al Sherif who seems to be feeding Shearer intelligence reports from inside the Libyan revolutionary council.
