The real story behind Trump's Florida gaming obsession

Jeb Bush was ready to counterpunch at Wednesday night’s debate when asked about Donald Trump’s statement that politicians could be bought. "The one guy that had some special interests that I know of that tried to get me to change my views on something—that was generous and gave me money—was Donald Trump," Bush said. "He wanted casino gambling in Florida."

That’s when Trump cut him off—and failed to tell the truth. “I didn't,” Trump said.

He and his company have repeatedly been on record trying to get casino deals in one form or another in Florida. From hiring lobbyists to taking a former business partner to court, Trump’s interest in getting a piece of Florida’s gaming industry has been documented in news articles from Tallahassee to Miami. Trump’s involvement in expanding Florida gaming—an effort that regularly fails in the state Capitol due to the influence of conservative lawmakers—is well-known among state capital reporters, politicians and lobbyists alike.

Let’s get some details before flinging “Liar, Liar” around. Surely integrity would dictate this.

What would Jeb Bush have actually needed to do. Is there a state prescribed process that requires the governor? Or would Jeb’s input have only been “helpful”? Trump’s counter-assertion that he would have bought his way in had he been serious might have been clumsy, but could it be true?

Maybe Bush is dead set against gambling due to his relgious faith - but, if he’s Catholic, that can’t be a problem. Most enjoying gambling and bingo games. But, Bush is owned by his donors and lobbyists. They all are beholden to them. I’m sure that Trump donated and helped Bush’s campaign coffers because - gee whiz - he has business dealings in Florida.

Nope.
Let me make this clear to you.
Cruz’s positions were better.
Rubio won on STYLE, and INFORMATION CONVEYED (given to voters on his position).
Where in that statement does it say I agree with Amnesty?
My scoring is based on DEBATE SKILLS, not content.
24 million people (guess) watched tonight, and I’ll bet big money a majority came away thinking Rubio looked and sounded good tonight.
These are people who don’t follow it as closely as we do, and didn’t have opinions before tonight.

$500 per plate might be a lot depending on how many people showed up. They usually try to get the attendees to open their checkbooks for additional donations too.

Can you explain what it would have been that Jeb Bush would have needed to do here. What is Florida statute about the matter. Does it prescribe a process that needs the governor’s assent?

If you have info to the contrary please post it.

Other than confirming that Trump supported Jeb and lied about it tonight what is your point?

Can you please answer the more substantive question. Suppose in some fantasy Trump could have bought and sold Jeb with such a dinner (remember Trump was not GOP at the time) what good would have have done Trump? At best a good word on a referendum or something like that, which legally means exactly zero?

I’m not going to answer irrelevant horse manure.

What is irrelevant about it? The entire substance of the alleged “Lie” turns on it, and the fact you are dodging it merely underscores my point.

The whole exchange was unnecessary.
Trump has always claimed he’s played the donation game.
There are multiple news stories about him trying to influence politicians in FL to get legal gaming.
Why deny it?
I told somebody earlier, I sometimes think the guy’s mouth engages before his brain.
It happens to all of us, but to keep denying it tonight looks bad tomorrow when all those stories hit the MSM.
Are regular voters going to dissect it like you did?
I don’t know.
I do know if anything will hurt Trump, it would be appearing to be dishonest about anything.
JMHO

He never lied about supporting Bush. That is a pure misrepresentation on your part.

It doesn’t turn on how much support he gave Jeb it’s about whether he gave him support. Nitpicking the dollar amount is retarded.

Bush accused him of giving him support and lobbying for casinos. Trump’s reply was, verbatim, “totally false.” What part of “totally” has you stumped?

You dodge again... is there a proof that Trump had any expectation out of Bush at all concerning this particular issue? So far it is a he said she said.

From the article, it was a partner who was trying to get the casino in. And, you know what? Who the heck even cares now - it’s been so long ago. People sometimes don’t remember things exactly as they happened - and frankly, I don’t think Trump thought he was lying - and I’ll take his side over Bush’s any day - right or wrong - because I simply don’t want that man anywhere near the WH. No more Bushes!

The kind of debating Cruz did in college.

Come to the event, with no preconceptions, and see which debater scores the most points (12345) on a number of categories.
Whether I agree, or disagree with the debaters position doesn’t count.
Only, as a unknowing observer, did he make a sound argument for his case.

Debate Skills is what I call it, I don’t know how they refer to it in the Ivy Leagues.

Suppose Trump went on national news tomorrow and said that he had never broached the topic of gambling at all with Jeb even though he was pressing other politicians for support. Maybe it was pointless and he knew it.

Would anyone accept that, or would Jeb suddenly be seen as the Mr. White Haloed I Cannot Ever Tell A Lie in the picture? For the joy of finding something, anything, to take Trump down with regardless of how applicable?

I think if we are of integrity we won’t just look for lies, we will look for truths we may have missed.
