Food banks across the country are seeing a rising demand for free groceries despite the growing economy, leading some charities to reduce the amount of food they offer each family.
U.S. food banks are expected to give away about 4 billion pounds of food this year, more than double the amount provided a decade ago, according to Feeding America, the nation's primary food bank network. The group gave away 3.8 billion in 2013.

Unexpected and surprising? Not if you are paying attention.
The 0vomit administration and all liberals have trained Americans to be dependent and always looking for a handout. They have rewarded that behavior. Now they act surprised. (Act surprised. Not are surprised.)
Too many Americans have embraced dependency wholeheartedly. Too many others who used to be more conservative have given up and decided they want to get “their share” of the freebies, too. I can hardly fault them for giving in to the temptation and pressure.
Tragedy of the Commons.

They once did a study:
Double the free food and it all gets taken. It doesn’t mean poverty doubled, it means that people will take free stuff.

Of course I am in Pittsburgh, and we have about the lowest % of Hispanics in the country here.

Surprising???
Not to anyone that has paying attention to what the hell has been happening in American for the last seven years, and not just regurgitating whatever the Radical Obamunists tell you to say.

What would the food bank supply look like if every person in the USA was here legally?

It may depend on where you live. I know of a food bank that is seeing more and more formerly well employed individuals now out of work and can't afford to feed themselves and their families. As one official said, some of their clients once were regular donors to the food bank. Now these donors need help.

Food banks were meant for people on hard times. Now it's a supply depot for
illegals, and Welfare abusers.

My wife works with a woman who goes to the food bank on a regular basis. Both the woman and her husband work, so they do not need to go there, they are just cheap. One day she brought in a half a flat of tomatoes for everyone.
My wife passed, others did not.

“surprising” is moving right up there with “unexpected” as words to describe the awfulness of the Obama economy. Of course, to anyone who’s taken even a basic economics course this news is neither surprising nor unexpected.

Actually less than most cities of similar size. The diversity police constantly hammer the Pittsburgh region for not being sufficiently diverse.
However, we do have more than our share of Indians, Slovaks and Poles.
So many Poles at one place I worked that they called one particular department "the Ski Lodge." But they're all too pale to garner any "diversity points."

I was a career preacher for nearly 30 years. We had a benevolent food/clothing service. In my 30 years, I never once gave anything to people simply down on their luck. It was always, always to people who didn't work, transients, etc.
Churches, etc, are targeted by the very people you describe.

I don't think most food banks ask for ID or proof of need. So anybody who isn't embarrassed about going to a food bank can stock up on groceries there for free, even if they have money to buy groceries.
It also means that food stamp recipients can stock up on staples at a food bank, and use their food stamp allotment on steak and lobster (either to consume, or to sell for cash to buy smokes and liquor).

Same here. Let Mexico feed hungry Mexicans, preferably after they’ve gone back to Mexico. They have become a plague. I have also gotten much more aggressive with business I deal with. I snoop around, and if I can identify employees who can’t speak English, I let the owner or manager know my suspicion and that I am going elsewhere. Yes, they could be recent legal immigrants, but given the scope of the invasion, the odds favor them being illegals. I think this is the key to getting around the government enablers—putting the fear into businesses that if customers even suspect the presence of illegal aliens, they will take their money elsewhere.

I just wasn’t sure they termed the first summer the Summer of Recovery or whatever. The second summer may have been the first to be named that.
