The Tolerant Jeweler Who Harbored an Impure Opinion of Same-Sex Marriage
National Review ^ | 5/22/2015 | Charels C.W. Cooke

Posted on 05/24/2015 5:21:29 AM PDT by Servant of the Cross

In the American Conservative yesterday, Rod Dreher related the following story:

So, a Canadian Christian jeweler custom-made a pair of engagement rings for a lesbian couple, Nicole White and Pam Renouf, at their request. Later, when they found out that the jeweler personally opposes same-sex marriage, they went to pieces and demanded their money back. The couple now believes the rings they ordered will have been tainted by having been fashioned by jeweler Esau Jardon’s hands, given what impure thoughts he holds in his mind.

One could be forgiven for wondering how we are all supposed to keep up. Last month, as Indiana’s rather tame religious-freedom legislation was being torched by the mob, America’s more devout dissenters were informed that the price of participation in the marketplace was the subjugation of one’s conscience to one’s Caesar. “You can’t opt out of the law,” the agitators explained. “This isn’t the Jim Crow South!” Their core message? That if we all keep quiet about our views — and if we treat commercial transactions as commercial transactions — nobody will end up getting hurt. Or, put another way: “Cater my wedding, you bigot.”

In Dreher’s story, alas, the opposite case appears to obtain. “We can’t be expected to honor our contracts with companies that disagree with us,” the outraged couple is arguing, “for that might taint our nuptials.” The new message? That we can’t all get along by keeping quiet, but instead need to positively affirm one another or face the consequences. Or, put another way: “Even if I ask you to, don’t cater my wedding, you bigot.”

So gays will no longer eat at In-n-Out Burgers? Or just not buy drinks?

Wait a minute...now, those who do not believe homosexuality is correct can not making a living in any form or fashion. EITHER, one condones homosexuality, or just by the very fact of not believing it is okay, one can NOT be allowed to provide services to homosexuals (or anyone else for that matter) unless one signs an agreement that they are in agreement with the practice of homosexuality.

In other words, either privately or publicly, disagreement with homosexuality is NOT allowed. Did I get that right?

This is the real crux of the issue with homosexual “marriage.” It isn’t about letting homosexuals live together in committed relationships. It’s about homosexuals demanding that all of us accept and applaud what they do. Dissent will not be tolerated, and our children will be told that homosexuality is normal if not laudable. Want to raise your children to believe in Christian morality? Want to practice your religion in your business? That simply cannot be allowed.

If this was only about tolerance, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. Homosexuality is certainly sinful but it’s no worse than many other sins, like adultery or lying. The difference is we don’t have adulterers marching in the streets telling us we have to applaud their adultery.

Homosexuality is evil and unnatural. It’s evil because it goes against God’s plan as revealed by Jesus and the prophets. There’s no other reasonable interpretation of scripture read in context. It’s unnatural in that it uses the human body in ways for which the body is not designed. For example, the anus is not designed for intercourse. This is simple scientific fact.

These truths are understandably offensive to homosexuals, because no one likes to be told they are sinful or disordered. It hurts. Nevertheless, truth is what it is, and imperial decrees from the courts cannot change it. What the homosexualists can do, however, is use government to try and oppress dissent. The added fact that they will tear apart civil society to do so matters not. But again, we’re talking about unrepentant evil, disordered people.

Yes. You are right. Any public disagreement with homosexuality will not be allowed. Think Sodom and Gomorrah where the virtuous will be forced to hide in their homes.

can we start publishing stories of Christian couples shocked to learn the homo run business supports the destruction of traditional marriage?

how about stories of the lone Christian diner who learns the restaurant he frequents opposes his long held Christian beliefs? how he’s been scared for life after realizing he’s been supporting the undermining of his faith?

You mean Christian couples are shocked to find out that some hair-dressers, interior designers, art gallery owners etc. may not be heterosexual?

Actually they are conducting transactions, believing that others have a right to earn an honest living.

They don’t go to the press and say — I just found out my hairdresser is gay, I want my money back.

maybe they should start... and convince other Christians to avoid those businesses as well.

after all, that’s the intention of this story... to shut down the ‘intolerant’ business and inflict ‘personal ruin’ on the shop owner

“Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.”

Isaiah 5:20King James Version (KJV)
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light
and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

I think we know the ones who will be damned.

It must be emotionally draining living a lie every day and expecting others to be a part of it by force.

Well. Yes. But the evilness of the money is soon transferred away when it is spent (at least these lesbians might think).
