Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has run into a little bit of trouble on immigration again, this time forcing a communications aide off his staff after Democrats pushed out old tweets from the aide disparaging Rep. Steve King (R-IA), a well-known opponent of amnesty.
"In other news, I see Iowa is once again embarrassing itself, and the GOP, this morning. Thanks, guys," the aide, Liz Mair tweeted, referring to King's January 24th Iowa Freedom Summit where Walker, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Carly Fiorina, and other possible Republican presidential candidates spoke.
Walker's troubles with immigration began in January when opponents began circulating prior statements of his showing that Walker has endorsed both a "path to citizenship" generally and the Senate's Gang of 8 bill specifically.
Walker has since tried to walk those positions back, telling Fox News Sunday's Chris Wallace on March 1st, "My view has changed, Im flat-out saying it. Candidates can say that, sometimes they dont."
And Walker's view on immigration has changed. Here he is on immigration in July of 2013: "You hear some people talk about border security and a wall and all that. To me, I don't know that you need any of that if you had a better, saner way to let people into the country in the first place."
And here is Walker in March 2015: "I've talked to people all across America. And the concerns I have is that we need to secure the border. We ultimately need to put in place a system that works. A legal immigration system that works. And part of doing this is put the onus on employers, getting them E-Verify and tools to do that."
So Walker has shifted from believing a secure border wasn't really necessary to now believing that it is.
But what about those illegal immigrants already here? What is Walker's position on that? Again, from March 1st:
WALLACE: The question was, can you envision a world where if these people paid a penalty, that they would have a path to citizenship? And you said, sure, that makes sense.
WALKER: I believe there's a way that you can do that. First and foremost, you've got to secure that border or none of these plans make any sense.
(emphasis added) Notice the present tense. Walker still believes that illegal immigrants currently in the United States should be given a path to citizenship, but only if you secure the border first, which is a not uncommon Republican position on immigration.
But how is it any different than Jeb Bush's position?
Here is Jeb from March 13:
Its easy to say, Well, anything you propose is amnesty, but thats not a plan. Thats a sentiment, thats not a plan. I think the best plan, the most realistic plan, the grown up plan, if you will, is once you control the border and youre confident its not going to be another magnet, is to say, Lets let these folks achieve earned legal status where they work, where they come out of the shadows.
So both Walker and Bush believe we should "secure"/"control" the border first (whatever that means), and then, only after that is accomplished, can we give legal status/citizenship to illegal immigrants currently in the United States.
If there is any difference between Walker and Bush on immigration, I do not see it.
(VIDEO-AT-LINK)
There is no diff between either of the uniparties on immigration.
Until CW-II, that is.
Walker is obviously another phoney.
Not one of the republicans candidates showing signs of running in 2016 will deport all illegals.
When we allow illegals to stay, it is a form of amnesty.
If I was the president, I would issue an executive order in deporting every single immigrant breaking our laws.
What good are laws when immigrants can break them?
because laws ARE NOT ENFORCED
No I dont see a difference either, we can and should do better.
I said it at the time and I’ll say again now; Walker says he changed his mind on illegal immigration, he said it for nothing more than political expediency.
Which means he’ll change it right back.
What good are laws when immigrants can break them?
Fraudulently Documented Foreigners have been encouraged to invade and colonize our country by our government, both parties.
Until we stop voting for cheap labor importers we will never get enforcement.
The GOP represents the employers of illegal aliens.
The Democrats represent the illegal aliens.
No one is representing the citizens.
That must change.
I just get the sense from Walker that if elected President we would all come to realize after about a year of his presidency that on every substantial issue... immigration, Barrycare, the national debt... he would be indistinguishable from Jeb Bush or John Boehner. I hope that wouldn’t be the case but I have to trust my instinct on this.
I have had the same suspicions. His earlier statements supporting amnesty and his close frienships with Paul Ryan and Reince Preibus set off alarm bells for me.
I said early on he may be Plan B for The Cheap Labor Express.
Walker and Reince Priebus (leader of the GOPe) are “close friends”. What do you expect?
God you Hillary lovers kill me. Why not just tell us that you are a liberal democrat. At least you would be honest for once in your life.
My gut has told me for some time now, that Scott Walker is a ‘made man’ of the GOP-e. His recent flip-flops, ‘evolving’ positions, and missteps, have convinced me even further.
Walker’s opinion may have changed in the past few years after seeing what hussein’s idea of border control is, so I’m willing to give him a chance to clarify.
In the end, it will most likely be an enforcement/secure border trigger that would eventually open the door to a more comprehensive reform. This makes Walker in line with Rubio, not Bush.
Of course there’s a HUGE difference between Bush and Walker.
Walker is saying that it’s possible for anyone to become a US citizen. And that’s true. If someone qualifies and jumps through the right hoops, they can become a US citizen. There *is* a pathway to citizenship. Maybe it can be modified.
Bush is saying to let illegals currently here stay here.
There is a significant difference.
This author is trying to kill off Walker so that Bush is the only man left standing.
And we are falling for it.
This is a repeat of the last election cycle — killing off everyone ... and then we’re stuck with Romney.
We have and have had an immigration system that works...He needs to be sent home until he learns what Americans want...
I thought (or rather, hoped) the same thing about Obama. I thought that once elected, the 'rat party bosses would explain that the "change" he was advocating would have to be accomplished slowly, and that he'd need to "learn how the game is played" inside the beltway. Unfortunately, he doubled down on everything, destroyed the USA and even decimated his own party as one after another, the 'rats were voted out of office. The "go along to get along" approach is only adopted by Republicrats.
What a hoot...
Look, the man is a typical political phoney, and got his teet caught in the ringer...There ya have it.
Walker has repeatedly said he supports a path to citizenship for illegals. Thats pretty well documented.
In the past month, he has had a “Whitehouse Road” conversion, but he has in the past supported allowing illegals to stay and ultimately become citizens.
