I think it survived. I’m not an astronomer but I’m an expert on being starstruck and I don’t think this comet was.

We’ll know more about how much is left soon. Certainly something survived, and that might be more rock than ice now?

Yeah, it spread out a lot. Should still go up and over us though, according to the original projected path.

I don’t know if they will ever be sure...soho did not pick it up so that suggests that it had no oxygen. Least that’s how I think that works on not sure.
No wait I am positive how that imaging works....so that will have them scratching their heads for awhile.

Well know more about how much is left soon. Certainly something survived, and that might be more rock than ice now?I got to think if the entire comet didn't get eaten by the Sun, it survived. It's alive! It's alive!

no no not at all....we are in it’s inbound but firsts it’s out bound pathway.
So the earth’s rotation gets the north pole and the solar winds gets the south pole on exit....
Remember though a lot of the debris will be not even Atom size...so what I am interested in is long term climate effects....lol

Now that I think about it, the sun did look kind of dim this afternoon. ;)

Well the ancients talked about a “blue star” that unmasks. Maybe it’s the mother ship using the sun in a braking maneuver to enter earth’s orbit??? lol

Look, I’m a geezer. Back in the 50’s is when I first heard about Haley’s Comet. I couldn’t wait even though it was going to be ‘86. Then Kohoutek was coming. It was a bust. So was Haleys. Give me one decent comet before I depart this mortal coil.

I was just looking at the latest SOHO image. Looks like a lot of debris to me - no discernible nucleus. If the sun somehow pushed some of it into a lower trajectory, like gipper said, the end of December might be interesting. Then we still have the entry trail earth will go through in January. And then there is the comet that has a VERY close encounter with Mars next year!
Don't give up yet! ;)

Point of clarification when I said soho did not pick it up i meant the SDO did not....lol
The SDO totally captures only oxygen related images....
