I am positive now we have a full fledged comet....

I'm praying we are right. By the way, me and George Gipp were born in the same town. Laurium, Michigan

Meanwhile; a competing thread elsewhere at FR says 'He's dead, Jim'...

I'm not so sure...

Zoomed in on the last pic, just not enough definition to see if a nucleus still exists.

yep I get that but they have been saying the nucleus was weird for a month now. Also they really do not know what makes up ISON.

That said....it’s burning bright if you look at other SOHO loops of sun grazers that did not make it...I don’t think this fits the mold...

Not that knowledgeable but how does the Sun extract the nucleus without extracting the tail?

remember now that it’s pulling away from the sun the comet’s head is before the tail!

Well the debris field is technically not a comet’s tail...but the tail is behind the comet incoming to the sun due to Solar winds. On exit the comet’s tail is pushed ahead of the actual comet.

Now with that said...the nucleus was thought to be just a conglomeration of ice chunks. So when the radiational pressure of the Sun started to exert itself on teh comet it acts to destroy that bond and basically destroy or vaporized it’s core.

I believe the comet is fine.

If I recall hearing, this comet is from outside the normal trajectories of comets, and this was I believe it’s first go by the sun.

I believe it passed by the sun, and the loose stuff on the outside was expelled, but it will be back.

This is just a guess from this one viewpoint, but I remain quite optimistic.

Yup, tail is always away from the sun.

That's why I was wondering in the loop where it emerged from the backside if it wasn't debris but the tail in the process of reorienting, fight between the gravitation effect of the close approach and the solar wind eventually winning out as it pulled away.

Just wilda-- guessing :)

Are you saying the comet should now be pushing it’s tail in the SOHO images?

Yep yep yep....u you will still see the debris field/trail but the actual tail will be ahead of the comet.

OK I can see the potential of a nucleus if this comet is in the process of flipping tail position.

Okay...if you look closely then exactly what you just theorized i believe is the truth indeed.

Take awhile for it to settle down but that last wide angle image is I think a thing of beauty...

interesting tweet..... Follow Sungrazer Comets ‏@SungrazerComets Matthew Knight and I have looked at literally a couple of thousand sungrazing comets. We've NEVER seen one behave like #ISON. Astounding!
