President Obama has declined an invitation to speak at next month’s ceremony marking the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address.
The event, slated for Nov. 19 at the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, instead will feature Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and renowned historian James McPherson as the keynote speakers, the Gettysburg National Military Park said in a press release.
“President Obama will not attend and the Secretary of Interior will represent the administration,” the park pointed out in the first paragraph of its press release.
It’s unclear why Mr. Obama, a noted admirer of President Lincoln, declined the invitation. Among other tributes to the 16th president, Mr. Obama used the Lincoln Bible at both of his inauguration ceremonies, in 2009 and 2013.
Skipping the event may not make many waves in Washington, but it’s already causing an uproar in Pennsylvania.
Writing for the Harrisburg, Pa., newspaper the Patriot News, journalist Donald Gilliland said the president’s decision “is nothing less than a profile in cowardice.”

Obama respects the Constitution about as much as Lincoln did. The time is once again approaching when a few states may want to exit this "voluntary" union.
He will likely have his own CW if he stays course. Then he can read his own prepared speech on his teleprompts.

This works for me. To be honest Obama should be banned from attending ANY and ALL ceremonies, events or occasions that have any significance of valor or honor at all.

One could say “Lincoln gave us Obama”
obama doesn’t admire Lincoln, or our other past Presidents including clinton and carter, any of our Founding Fathers, our Constitution our, military, our history. He has nothing but hate and vitriol for anything American, much like I have for him and his socialist ilk.
Good. He should not desecrate sacred
ground with his presence.
Besides, historians and reenactors tend to be a very patriotic bunch. He would have an embarrassingly chilly reception up there.

This is cowardice. How a US President could miss this is unbelievable.
Gettysburg is very close to DC. He went to a 200th Anniversary of Lincoln’s birth event, though.
He’s afraid the re-enactors that will be there will have real bullets.
