New video has emerged of police interviewing teenagers who saw the Steubenville rape victim getting more and more drunk before she was attacked, ABC News reports. "I could tell that she was gradually getting more drunk and worse throughout the night, said 16-year-old Farrah Marcino. Just, like, that she couldnt, like, she didnt walk." Anthony Craig, 18, described her as "a mess" and said she "wasn't responding."
But no one stopped her from leaving the party with her convicted rapists, Trent Mays and Ma'Lik Richmondeven though, Craig said, she was passed out and carried away. "She wanted to go with Trent," he said. "Like, we just kept trying to tell her: You dont want to do this. You dont want to go with them.' I just let her do what she want[ed], which I understand was wrong." Ohio's district attorney seems to agree: He's convening a grand jury to investigate whether charges can be filed against teens who failed to report the attack.
I'd also like to know who's responsible for an underage girl having access to alcohol.
And I'd also like to know who supplied the premises.
And I wonder why the parents of the victim haven't filed civil suits.
Back around 1980 when I was 30, I spent a weekend with my buddy at his family's cottage on a small lake north of Detroit. We partied hard at a bar on Saturday night then went out for breakfast. After leaving the restaurant, we saw a girl walking along the highway and stopped to offer her a ride. She accepted and got in the backseat and it was apparent she was drunk on her butt.
Well, she kept asking one of us to join her back there but I wouldn't have anything to do with that and when we spotted a cop car, I demanded my buddy signal him over where we then turned the gal over to them.
You just don't know what can come of a situtation like that and I sure as hell didn't want to be accused in a potential rape case.
As it turns out, when the cop looked at my drivers license, he recognized my name and told me that he was a student at the Detroit Police Academy when my dad was an instructor there.......
Wholly different question. But one worth asking.
Each situation is different. Put yourself in that same situation but you see some other guys, whom you know have been involved with totally sketchy sexual assault of drunk girls before, throw her into their car before you try to help her.
Then you see the cop drive by.
Would you have flagged him down? Thats the question here. Personally, Im confident I would have. (But Im in my 40s and have a wealth of experience. The kids in this story are in high school with a whole different set of things going on. I get that.)
Where's her responsibility for taking that sip of beer? Setting the rape aside, what she was doing was illegal. She went to the party knowing full well what type of party is was. Where were her parents and where were all the kids' parents? I don't buy the excuse that this is normal these days. Who let it become normal?
I can't because I was never in a situation like THAT one..nor did I ever drink or attend booze parties as a high schooler....
Of course being the grandson of a Detroit cop and the son of a Detroit cop might have had something to do with that..........
I’ve been familiar with too many girls (not just teens) that no matter how much warning I can give them about not doing something like that and getting drunk (or with drugs) and running around in a crowd like that (or in ‘situations’ like that) - they’ll PERSIST despite all the absolutely desperate warnings I can give.
Usually I’ll hear about things much later, about what happened - as nothing was clearly going on ‘at the time’ I gave the warnings. I know where it’s leading and where it’s going - but NO MATTER to the girls involved ... because they’ll persist all the way to the end. With some I figure they know what’s going to happen and they’re okay with it - because afterwards, it’s like it was no big deal.
I’ve seen way too much of it where these girls will ABSOLUTELY PERSIST in going down this track no matter what (even when they are clear-headed at first). Of course, when they’re not clear-headed later on, it’s even more useless at that time.
With many of these parents who say they are mad at the guys, they should be mad at the girls because they absolutely persist in getting totally wasted knowing that this is where they’re going to end up.
Young girls can be very stupid. Young girls who have had sex with a young man can be even more stupid. The prolactin kicks in and they put themselves on the line, pregnancy, rape, drunkeness. They go stupid.
Immorality in all forms is an accepted way of life. Some parents let their daughters allow boyfriends 'sleep overs' without a second thought. Teens of that age are not stupid. They know deep in their hearts what is wrong & what is right. They are given the lowest denominator to live by & they oblige.
This girl was treated like garbage, was laughed at & it was spread all over the internet. How truly sad if she was actually given a date rape drug, One of the kids asked "What if this was YOUR sister" & the answer was "She's not'. Not everyone takes responsibility for their actions & they certainly won't for others actions. Even the team coach fluffed it off & didn't take any action to keep these guys from playing.
It is a difficult task for decent parents & kids ro cope with these problem. The parents of all the involved teenagers should at least have some notion of who their kids hang out with, if they are actually at the place they say they are going & what is going on at that place.
The one saving grace about this story is that people responded with outrage & forced the prosecuter & the coach to finally deal with the problem of these football hero rapists - who broke down in court & cried like babies.
Why else would two boys carry a drunk girl off bodily? Based on videos of their filthy language that accompanied this situation, they probably made their intentions to rape crystal clear.
They were all drinking illegally and depending on one another not to call the police; but their partying is over now because they did nothing to save this girl's health, not even call the parents in whose house this was taking place to help out. But the party in jail will just be startin' when those two nice-looking boys get there.
One of my younger family members first met his future wife by rescuing her, a complete stranger, from a pest who was hitting on her at a party. They've been married for years now. Chivalry is not entirely dead!
I believe I read in the DailyMail that the parents at whose house the drinking happened are going to be charged.
Rape? In any other state, these kids would not even be charged. There was zero intercourse. Wasn’t it a finger. I am not trying to belittle that fact, but only in Ohio is that considered rape.
I live fairly close to Steubenville and have followed this case from the beginning. This is my take:
This type of partying was commonplace and there was talk of another rape that happened in April. There may also be other girls who were treated like this. The family of the girl “raped” in April was turned away by the authorities in Steubenville. The other girls have said nothing. The current victim’s parents did not go away quietly. And they have death threats against them now.
This current victim is the ex-girlfriend of one of the boys present that night who filmed and took pictures. She broke up with him and he tweeted 2 weeks before this incident that he would “destroy her”.
So the modus operandi was in place. The only difference was that they were to take pictures and video and spread them around to “destroy” her. What they were too stupid to understand was that the video, pictures and texts would bring them down. They provided all the evidence the police needed.
Because the teenagers did not even come forward with information when asked by police. None of them. The three eye witnesses were compelled to talk with immunity. The coach did not help. The Grand Jury will compel these awful people to talk.
If a drunk girl demands to be allowed to do something unwise, are the people around her allowed to physically restrain her from her unwisdom? Because that's what it would have taken: use of physical force against the football players AND the girl.
Another complicating factor was that calling the police would result in their officially taking notice of the underage drinking at the party.
Oh, so it’s ok to insert random digits, items, etc., into an unwilling/incapacitated female’s vagina. As long as it’s not a penis. Right?
Everywhere but Ohio...yes. That is the law not my personal feeling on the subject.
Another complicating factor was that calling the police would result in their officially taking notice of the underage drinking at the party.
Steubenville is a river town. Football is king. I think all (21?)coaches should be investigated. As well as all the LE agencies in Jefferson County. Investigated by the FBI that is.
To do something would be judgmental - and the golden rule for the previous 25 years is, Dont judge!
