GOP Rules Committee Rapidly Moving to Shut Out Grassroots at 2:00 p.m. Today (It's not over)
RedState ^ | Tuesday August 28, 2012 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 08/28/2012 7:31:55 AM PDT by Bigtigermike

At 2:00 p.m. today in Tampa, the Republican National Committee, led by Team Romney, is moving to shut down conservative grassroots activists. I’ve been on the phone with several individuals involved in the fight who tell me that the fight is not over, it is only just starting.

Specifically, the media is reporting that the rules fight is over because Team Romney is abandoning Ben Ginsberg’s effort to allow candidates to control delegates. Under an initial proposal, delegates would, in effect, be chosen by the presumed nominee’s campaign and not based on votes in the states and delegate selection processes in the states.

That issue appears resolved, but several people I’ve spoken to this morning make clear that Team Romney and the RNC establishment are using that compromise as a red herring to distract from two major rules change proposals that would decimate Republican grassroots and prevent upstart political campaigns.

Reports that the floor fight threat is over might be designed to calm the grassroots and get them to ignore what is coming at 2 o’clock.

The first rule to be proposed is one that would give the Republican National Committee the power to change rules between conventions with a three-quarters vote of the RNC. One source tells me, “With a Republican President, of course this is doable. Everybody will roll over if a President Romney asks them too. They’ll be able to get Ben Ginsberg’s proposal next year.”

In other words, if Team Romney prevails in this rules change, they don’t have to worry about Ben Ginsberg not getting his way today on the delegate changes. They’ll be able to do it later when the press and grassroots are not watching.

The second rules change would front load winner takes all primaries.

I invite you to quit pinging me with your anti-Romney posts. Out of respect for you, I refuse to debate on any of this past this single post.

I am fully aware of the list of concerns regarding Romney, but I REFUSE to sit back on my thumb and simply yield to another 4 damn years of Obama.

You could show me videos of Romney on a bed with 6 women, in a whore house, and eating live puppies between sessions.... and he would still get my vote over Obama.

Anyway, you waste your time on me and I don’t care about this stuff anymore.... there is no argument that will change my mind. Regardless of how Romney may piss me off after the election, at any cost that White hating-Black muslim-corupt country wrecking bastard son of a communist whore, must be voted out of our White House, period.

I’ll bitch and complain later, but first that trash must go.

Cheers....

And they'll nod politely and then rule by decree. The RNC is now officially an incorrigible child. If it doesn't like the rules, it'll change them until Moderate Mitt gets what he needs.

I will not pretend, nor try to paint a rosy picture, by disagreeing with you here. What you say very well may occur, absolutely! My only point in my previous post is that we have to at least TRY to keep the RNC honest.

I see no reasonable alternative at this point. Now, again, if they DO do as you describe, then I couldn't agree more that all bets are off, and SHOULD be off.

This is my only point.

“There’s no way on earth that mitt is a Republican either. He’s even more liberal than paul and his tards.”

Are you really going to equivocate that nut Paul with Romney. Romney is guilty of not being as conservative as we want.

Ron Paul is a nutcase that thinka 911 happened because of our actions, not the nutty Muslims.

He also thinks it’s just fine for Iran to have nuclear weapons.

Please note: I wasn’t flaming you. Apologies if I came across that way. You and I are in agreement but I wonder which of us holds the RNC on a shorter leash. Let’s have a contest. :)

I am more pissed about the way it went down, than I am about the actual rule changes at this point!! It was shameful.

I hear many people here blaming the Ron Paul people for this, but this is simply not true. It is Romney and Boehner’s fault.

It is not just Ron Paul supporters who were hurt by this coup by the RNC elite. I am a Tea Party founder and have worked extremely hard for the last three years trying to get conservatives voted back in to the Republican party at the national AND local levels.

It is disheartening to realize I wasted my time and it was all for nothing. I have “put myself out there” and argued with co-workers, lost friends, etc.

I know that I am not the only one. Many other conservatives, libertarians, and others lost some faith today.

GOD bless you... I know that HE does.

Mark Levin just said that Reagan could not have been nominated if this rnc were in charge back then. He vowed to take preibus to the woodshed if the little prick will ever come back on his show.

We have no power to hold anyone’s feet to the fire.

That is where you (and Colonel_Flagg) and I disagree I suppose. I still hold out hope that the conservative movement within the RNC still has a chance, a diminished chance yes, but still a chance to right the ship so to speak.

Like I said to the good Colonel, "I'm not trying to paint a rosy picture here", I'm not. I'm not saying everything is "ok". But the fact that at least some brakes were applied today, gives ME hope, small hope, but still hope.

After all, at the START of today, the greatest threat was indeed "Rule 15" (which is now rule 16), that would've enabled a candidate to toss aside duly elected delegates to the Convention.

That rule has now been eliminated. Now granted, again, given Rule 12, it can simply be RE-instituted at any time, but the fact that it was fought off at least for now gives me a glimmer of hope that there are indeed others in the Party that won't stand for such shenanigans; so (I reason) perhaps such people can still be supported to stave off any elitist rule changes in the next two years. Again, a small hope, but a clear hope none the less, for me.

If not for you, or anyone, fine, I won't debate that; it's useless to debate with someone about how much "hope" they "should have". It's at least not very conservative to do so, because it would be like saying, "You HAVE to feel as I do".

So for me, as long as there's still a little hope, the fight is still worth fighting for; your mileage may vary.

“Reagan could not have been nominated if this rnc were in charge back then.”

Which is the point. They will never, ever, ever allow that to happen again. The GOP cannot be fixed. It should be abandoned. Like Lot, flee the place and DO NOT LOOK BACK.

Matthew 12:30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.

Hmmm. Was this statement made by Obama, Romney, or someone far more important?

As to doomsday cult, count me in. I am a Christian, and Christianity is a “cult” in the sense it is a distinct religious belief, and it does have a doomsday. However, predicting doomsday is something Jesus forbids us to do.

Just as he forbids us from empowering purveyors of false gods, promoters of their own deity, modern Neros who are not happy unless we are bowing to them and licking their boots.

Were they bystanders who refused to call Caesar their lord? Did not their resistance to tyranny for faithfulness to Jesus rock an empire? We give account to no other Lord, we will not bow to Obama, we will not bow to Romney, we will not bow to Fear. We will put our trust God, not man:

Psalm 127:1 Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

Peace,

SR

>> When you face it honestly Romney is not that different from Obama

The fact is they share interest in a few things we strongly object to: certain aspects of statism, socialism, and abortion. Their views are not identical however, and it’s to be negligent or deceitful in my opinion to suggest they are.

There’s no logical reason to descend any further. It’s an uphill battle, and taking the Romney route, as objectionable as it may be, is far more advantageous than taking the circuitous path through the Marxism being installed by the jackass. There is currently no golden road to be traveled, and to stand still is beyond foolish.

The GOP establishment is arguably the real problem, Romney is the symptom.

Especially in light of yesterday and today’s rules manipulation, it is increasingly important that we deconstruct the establishment and rebuild with real, American candidates. This means local action and local results.

Ok, apology accepted.

Please accept my apology for any ill-will generated by my post 449 to you.

I’m ONLY trying to rally some REAL grassroot activity within the RNC here, to keep them as “elite free” as possible.

AGAIN, for the RECORD, ONE “backroom rule change” and 47 is DONE with the RNC. Let me make THAT, crystal clear to all my fellow FReepers.

I have no hope left... Only faith in GOD. I have been an activist for almost 40 years... and to quote a song... “Same as it ever was”. Reagan was the ONLY exception. I just do not see any solution but to vote for the most Conservative people down ballot that I can. I have prayed and thought hard since Jim made his decision. romney proved today that he and the gop/e are just as corrupt and power hungry as I thought that they were. I despise obama with every scintilla on my being... but that does not equate to support for mitt. I am lost and without party or country tonight. I can't find the republic that I love more than I love myself. I will continue to pray for guidance.

Watch Romney in the Rasmussen poll. You'll see. Brief bounce from the masses seeing his name, then a steady march down.

I said back when there were nine candidates running, that one of them would ever be President. Color me prescient.

That’s true, each state has three on the national committee. I forgot the state chairman is automatically a member. So, it’s one man, one woman, and the state chair (male or female) of every state.

Ours in Texas will not vote for that rule change. I know them well and they won’t do that. We select delegates at the precinct convention level on primary election night, and they go to the county or district convention, and delegates are selected there for the state convention. The state convention, in a presidential election, selects delegates from each congressional district to go to the national convention and these delegates are bound to vote for the candidates who won “x” delegates in their congressional district primaries. They are bound to vote that way on the first and, I believe, second ballot, then if there is another ballot taken, they are free to vote their conscience.

Changing the rule as Romney wants, would trash that system as he would be allowed to choose his own delegates.

A pox on Romney. I was just thinking, a pox is a disease. He has liberal disease pox already, so my pox would cancel that pox and make him a conservative. Nah, it won’t happen.

I’ll tell you this ... I admire your optimism. I tend to be a fatalist when it comes to the party elite and I admit that freely. I’d much prefer to see a strong Republican Party structure run by the base. But after today, can you honestly say you see that as a possibility?

I’m more than willing to listen.
