Get rid of the right to bear arms (NYT article on revising the Constitution)
The New York Times ^ | 7/8/2012 | Melynda Price

Posted on 07/09/2012 5:30:24 AM PDT by darrellmaurina

I came of age when the word “drive-by” entered the American lexicon. By high school graduation, I lost one cousin to gun violence and another was incarcerated for a gun crime. I know many harmed by guns and even more who feared the possibility. I always wonder if, but for the Second Amendment, there would be a more radical commitment to compromise and peacefully working through easy and difficult issues. In writing the Second Amendment, the Framers didn't envision the kind of gun toting that is permitted across this country today.... I am not naïve enough to believe that doing away with the Second Amendment would do away with gun violence, but I know firsthand the impact of guns and gun shots on children. This nation was constructed and reconstructed in the aftermath of violent and bloody conflicts. Still, the Framers believed that not only the Constitution, but also the peaceful way the document was created, would penetrate the Americans' minds and change they engaged. The Constitution would be the only weapon needed unless there was an external enemy.

She should try writing her article with “gun” being replaced by “government tit”.

How about you remove the inner city gun ban and see where that violence goes.

“The Constitution would be the only weapon needed unless there was an external enemy.”

So...the sections of the Federalist where Hamilton explains how the right of the citizens to be armed is necessary to protect the population as a whole from a despot Presidency wielding a small, professional Federal army was all BS?

This clown is an ignorant, hyper-emotional liar.

Liberals are clueless...They don’t understand that the 2nd Amendment was written to provide a way for citizens to protect themselves from the lawless...[and from]...overreaching, tyrannical government.

Really? I beg to differ. It is deeply dangerous to imagine that the enemy is ignorant. The Left understands precisely the right use of the 2A. The lawless are their constituency and the government is their savior. Our guns and our willingness to use them are all that stands between them and their Utopia.

Dr. Melynda Price

The Good Doctor should expend some ink decrying the Gangsta culture indicative in her community which is the real root cause of "drive by's"

We agree.

Do we have some experts in the history of the Second Amendment here on Free Republic who can help make a credible case on her blog for the traditional view of the Second Amendment? I'm certainly pro-Second-Amendment, but it's not my area of historical expertise.

I participate on the blogs of several academics who are politically left-of-center, some more actively than others. (These are generally Calvinist blogs of professors and doctoral students that would be of no interest to most Freepers, unless you care about the current fight in Reformed church circles about the Two Kingdoms movement arguing that Christians should not use the Bible in politics or sometimes discouraging political activity as being somehow inappropriate for Christians.) Sometimes people on left-of-center websites just like having a token conservative to give them debating practice in what would otherwise be a liberal echo chamber. On occasion, however, I've seen minds changed — not necessarily the blog owner but sometimes some of the participants.

Not all liberals are a lost cause in academia. As we know, some of the most effective conservative thinkers today are former liberals who realized what was wrong with what they'd been taught.

I'm well aware that some leftists don't care about the truth and are propagandists rather than educators. However, a rational and informed conservative who has facts on his side may be able to present arguments which liberals who have spent their whole life in liberal circles may never have seen before. At the absolute minimum, a well-thought-out debate on her blog could expose lots of people to a new way of thinking.

I have seen somewhere that if you remove the black, teenage, male, gun homicide rate (well over 90% of which is committed against other blacks) from US statistics, the male, teenage, gun homicide rate would be similar to that of Switzerland. (This may be slightly different now with the increase in Hispanic gang violence such as by MS13.) Of course, you have about a 39-times better chance as a white of being a victim of violent crime committed by a black as the other way around.

This is something that needs to be addressed, since it is primarily the black communities that are victimized, but it is not because of the fear of being called a racist.

Yes, that is indeed the elephant in the room.

How about you remove the inner city gun ban and see where that violence goes.

A good theory, but in practice it requires that there be a numerically significant population of "productie, law-abiding citizens" who are willing to put guns to good use. I can't speak for all cities, but the ones that I am familiar with would not benefit from restoring 2A rights. There aren't enough good citizens left in them, and the ones that remain would not have the willngness to use guns to defend themselves. They were bred to be sheep, and sheep they are.

Guns aren't the problem in our cities. Heck, drugs aren't the problem in our cities, either. People are the problem-specifically, dependent people with entitlement mentalities.

She should read the series "Emily gets a gun" by a real journalist before writing her drivel.

Of course she is an expert because she is one of Holder's people.

” Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars. “

As well as I’ve ever seen it put ... hope you don’t mind my using that as a tagline for a while.
