County workers were alerted to the child's weight in early 2010 after his mother took him to a hospital for breathing problems. He was diagnosed with sleep apnea, which can be weight-related, and was given the breathing machine. Social workers began to monitor him under what the county calls protective supervision.
Last year, the boy lost weight but in recent months began to gain it back rapidly. That's when the county moved to take the child, records show.
The mother said that when she found out that other kids and a sibling might be giving her son extra food, she tried to put a stop to it and explain to him that he could eat only certain foods.
She tried to follow the recommendations of the doctors, such as getting him a bike and encouraging him to get exercise.
The mother wonders what role genetics plays in the boy's condition -- both she and his father and some other family members are overweight, she said. However, she also has a 16-year-old son who is tall and thin.
The mother agreed to enroll the child in a special Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital program called Healthy Kids, Healthy Weight.

The poor kid. Something about that doesn't sit quite right.

Yeah the genetics did it, not the 12 Big Macs for snacktime before dinner.
In all this, was there ever a screening for congenital metabolic illness? I’d bet the gummit paid very minimal attention to heredity. This might be a special needs child but I doubt that the mom was purposely stuffing the kid silly, or that a program for ordinarily obese kids was sufficient to address the problem.
Just another step on the slippery slope. Soon as parents we will only be genetic donors and the children will be taken at birth automatically. The state does EVERYTHING better don’t you know.

You mean sarcasm but the diet of a fatty and a thin one might be very similar. From memory, I had the opposite problem as a kid. I was a beanpole who didn’t gain an ounce and mom tried such things as feeding me lots of high fat food to no avail. Now I wish I had that problem, as adult years suddenly saw a great fattening of my waistline.

Try this kid as an adult; lock him up.

Rainbow Babies and Children’s hospital has been around for decades, long before ‘rainbow’ means what it does today.
They are a leading hospital in child healthcare.
If the mother had this child under the direction and care at Rainbow...she was doing the best available thing for him.
It sounds like they tried to work with this mother for years now, but she comes across as ineffective.
Fat isn’t the only health reason a kid may need to be removed for supervised medical care. It may be his only hope of not living a short and miserable life. If I was a 200 pound 8 yr old I’d hope some adults would step in and try to help me, even if I had to take a break from my family.!

Maybe mandatory pre-natal genetic screening would be the answer. /sarcasm
But now lawyers for the mother say they've been told that the foster mother who has the child in a neighboring suburb is having trouble keeping up with all of his appointments.
There was even a discussion about getting the foster mother additional help or moving the child again, this time to a foster home with a personal trainer, Amata said.
"I wonder why they didn't offer the mother that kind of extra help," Amata said.
I can't even begin to imagine the psychological damage the state is inflicting on this poor kid.

Same here. Except for one sister, six of us looked almost anemic, while one was always heavy, and she ate less than the rest of us. It took fifty plus years, but the rest of us caught up with her.
Kidding aside, I know two teenagers, who were grossly over-weight until middle school. Both sets of parents tried all kinds of diets, but none worked. Time took care of the problem on its own.
Maybe removing him from a home where the other kids sabotaged his diet and fed him junk food while the mother “tried” to meet the kid’s doctors recommendations would be the answer.
Oh wait....
