SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry is defending the death penalty in Texas and says he's never struggled with whether any of the inmates executed during his time as governor might have been innocent.

When Perry defended capital punishment, he drew strong applause from the scores of people in the audience at the Republican debate Wednesday night at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

I should also add: In the eyes of God, I am no better than Carla Faye Tucker in that I am a sinner, too. However, in the eyes of Texas, I am better in that I did not commit a savage murder.

No, I don’t think anywhere uses the same science as Joseph Chu, a once-notorious scientist at the defunct, discredited Houston Crime Lab. At least 7,000 untested rape kits dating back to the 90’s have been found since it was shut down (for the second time) in 2006. Dallas is at least making an effort...22 exonerations since the new DA took office, I believe.

". . .But, I would not stand in that room and execute another sinner strapped to a table.

I vacillated over the years, but that is my position based on some insight most people don’t experience

Yours is a unique and horrible experience; your compassion has a place.

Still, I look at it this way. If my life was full of vile troubles of the sort that led me to take an axe to children, maybe an adult for full measure, cut them to pieces as they begged for their lives, yet my mental illness compelled me to slay them. . . .

They would still be dead if I repented and accepted Christ -I could not take it back.

And if I truly repented and accepted Christ, I should surely wish to pay the ultimate price for my murderous sin.

To wish otherwise is not true repentance. I can repent of a lie told and ask forgiveness of the living person I hurt, but the dead can not forgive, so true repentance should be acceptance of the price of the crime.

Perry would of shinned in the forum they had the other day, but he bailed because of the fires and instead had to deal with THIS bs debate.

He should of attended the forum and blown off this with the fire excuse, if he had the race would be over. Instead he just handed Romney a life preserver.

Perry will still be in the lead, but after this I expect Mit to be much closer in the polls.

I don’t feel sorry for her. Whether or not she was legitimately “saved” is immaterial. The state said she was worthy of death, and the state has that power.

Romans 12:19
King James Version (KJV)

19Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

There is nothing we can do to even approximate the judgement of God.

Get your rocks off..if you must.

What exonerates the innocent can still condemn the guilty.

Absolutely. My problem is that is was being used to condemn the innocent, and probably still is.

Maybe it has nothing to do with Perry, maybe it all rests on the AG, I don’t know. It’s just something that bothers me.

Yes, that was pro’bly a mistake. Although I didn’t see anything of the South Carolina event or how it was organized.

I remember seeing Perry debate Hutchison and Medina in the primaries. If Texans hadn’t been on their toes and knew Hutchison is a socialist and a liar, and had just been dependent on the debates, Kay Baily would be our Governor. She whacked him all over the place.

So I wasn’t surprised by tonight. Again he needs some serious debate coaching. Especially if he wins and has to debate the Liar-in-Chief, Obama. He’s going to have to get viscious and cut Obama to the quick right off the bat. No bragadocious Texan, no slick politician, just hit him hard like a baseball bat.

You are correct.

But I am not the one to do the state’s justice, in that particular setting. At the time of the offense, I would not hesitate.

Just my take on it all...

From what they told me in Texas, Karla Faye was legit- but she still deserved to die...

I cant imagine the horror of being condemned for a crime I did not commit. It can happen, it has happened.

That being said Perry simply defends the condoned practices of the People he governs - right and proper for a public servant. All politicians ARE public servants, after all.

The death penalty? I'm for it, especially nnow that DNA evidence can prove/disprove, guilt.

As I told some of my irritating NY clients who could never get over the fact that I was from Texas and was a Conservative:

Recidivism rates are quite low for those that receive the death penalty.

There is a time and place for when the death penalty is beneficial to society. It definitely is NOT a deterrent if it is never administered.

The one jury trial I was selected for was a child molestation case. After the man was convicted and we entered the sentencing, we heard about 40+ years of molestation, theft, rape etc. At some point, these animals do not deserve their freedom. And for the very worst offenders, they should forfeit their life.

From what they told me in Texas, Karla Faye was legit- but she still deserved to die...

But Karla Faye wanted to live! And is that so odd for someone who has found new life? Not really, not for a new Christian. But Karla Faye deserved her fate.

If she received some comfort on her way to the chamber, that must be enough. Claiming Christ at the end can not be used to escape justice. Or else, every murderous psychopath would claim a love of Christ to escape the first death.

The death penalty first and foremost is a deterrent.

Execution is the cure for recidivism.

Yeah- the people that worked around said she was a true conversion. I wasn’t there- not mine to judge.

I’m sure she wanted to live- don’t we all? Philippians 1:21 King James Version (KJV) 21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

See you here, there, or in the air!

Disagree. First and foremost, the death penalty is -- first and foremost -- the most appropriate possible punishment that society can impose. It's a matter of symmetry: If one takes a life, one's life is then forfeit.

If this also serves a deterrent purpose, then well and good.

0% of executed criminals commit another crime....

Can’t execute them all, though. Want to come and decide who gets whacked? Who gets housed for life and who gets another chance after 20-30 years?

Paint me a portrait of how this is supposed to work.

The deterrent is "if one takes a life, one's life is then forfeit".

You say toe-may-toe, I say toe-mah-toe.
