Well, I don’t know about a paper tiger, but I’m past Xolumbia, SC now, still heading east and the rain has stopped. We only had that one little bit. We’re about an hour out of Fayettville, I guess. I’ll check in when I can (son doesn’t have wireless).

Drudge has linked to an AP article (I know, I know) about NYers in the Rockaways (my childhood beach) frolicking while Rome burned. They don’t want to go because they don’t believe Bloomberg. Had to laugh.

I hope these stories about Irene lessening are true.

Better to be safe than sorry, I suppose.

They’ve cried wolf so many times it’s hard to know what to believe. Just in case, it couldn’t hurt to have supplies and a backup plan in place.

There will always be idiots in the world. The less the better (I didn’t say that).

Media blowing this out of proportion over and over.
Granted, a few spots south are iffy, but not much more.
At least the people in NY got to get out of the old homes for once.

Is it within the realm of possibility that weather forecasters and weather networks are EXAGERATING the severity of Irene ?

Thats probably right up there with Trutherism and Aliens. It is extremely unlikely.

So far I see that two professional organizations (Weather Underground and Advance Forecasting Corporation) are downplaying the end-of-the-world catastrophic hysteria for this storm. I would expect others, like The Weather Channel to continue the hype as they have the human-caused global warming sky-is-falling mantra in the face of scientific evidence to the contrary.

That said, of course the MSM is going to hype the shyte out of it, its what they do. No politics in it, just the desire to get ratings. They’ve been doing this since I started following hurricanes (25+ years)

Just got RadarScope application for my Android phone today. It’s available for iPhone and Mac, too. See http://www.basevelocity.com/

It serves up NEXRAD Level 3 data (like GRLevel3).

It shows the tornado watch outline. Select the nearest radar station (KMHX) and Storm Relative Velocity Tilt 1 and zoom in. You can see the rotating couplets within the storm rotation.

(I have no connection to BaseVelocity - just a happy user.)

Water Bladders are good options for both those on well and/or municipal water. They come in many different sizes.

Thanks, NN - just told my husband to pick up paper plates, hadn’t even thought of that.

If you eat off of paper plates, don't forget to buy erasers so you can re-use them ;-)

Good luck to ya, Gabz. Prayers up for all in the path.

Cheers!

that looks interesting but pretty expensive for an ap. Well I don’t have that many so not sure what is high & reasonable. I do have a couple paid ones & they were 2.99, I added the Hurricane ap yesterday & it was 2.99 and has a lot of good information and maps.

That's still 50ish mph winds, but surely not the end of what passes for life in the Rotten Apple.

1) The wind speeds will be much higher at the top of the skyscrapers.

2) The real danger is the surge, which will be enormous because the storm is so wide, even if it is only a Cat 1 hitting New York. New York City suffered devastating damage and a huge storm surge from a Category 1 hurricane in 1893.

This will probably be my last update.I can see white flashes outside which must mean transformers are going. The wind has picked up quite a lot.Gusting I would say between 50-60 right now.A tornado watch has been issued for the area. The rain has been coming down heavy the last hour.My power has been going off and on so I imagine it will be off for good in a little while.Stay safe everyone in the path of the storm.
