Approximately 65 million people are likely to be directly impacted by Hurricane Irene as the storm takes aim at the densely populated Eastern Seaboard. Evacuations are underway for high flood risk areas.

Mass transit cancellations, schedule changes and road/bridge closures are occurring throughout the storm warning areas. Please check with local news and Emergency Management Operations to determine the recommendations for your immediate area.

I remember one hurricane, sometime in the mid-80's... I think it was only a TS at the time... but it was really, really weird. I kept looking outside and the carport area, kitchen doors, windows were absolutely covered with zillions of big bees (looked like large honey bees). It was the strangest thing I've ever seen... something out of a Hitchcock movie or something.

The next day the driveway was completely littered with bee bodies... just everywhere. Really strange.

My guess was that some swarm got swept up in the wind from somewhere and just happened to get dumped on my property.

No disrespect...i bet you’re a great person but those of us who have lived through big storms....Camille in my case...thought this one was overblown to begin with

Overblown is in the eye of the beholder. Camille was only as bad as where you were when it hit, and it was bad. This one was no Camille but it is going up the entire eastern seaboard with the dirty side. Camille didn’t cover such a large area with storm surge. A hurricane hitting the Gulf coast west to east like this would cause enormous damage even at cat 1

Constellation reports Calvert Cliffs nuclear reactor has gone off-line; company says facility is safe - AP (Southern Maryland)

Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Alabama shut down during the spring tornado outbreak. It was supposed to in that situation. I would think that is probably the case here

We do hope everyone is safe up there..hope there is not much floodin..and damage from hurricane force winds and sea wall surges.

I’m the one who made the comment about the “my hurricane was bigger than yours” and that was what sageb1 was commenting about.

It really doesn’t matter who are what others have been through when others are going through something different - unless you are offering information on how to make getting through one easier or help in cleaning up afterward. Taht was what my comment was referring to..

I was one of the lucky ones today, I only put up with 23 hours of wind and rain and don’t believe I have any damage, but won’t know until after daybreak, but others weren’t quite so lucky and still others are still dealing with it.

When it’s over the one upmanship is fine, but not when people are still in the middle of it.

My bf’s family lost power about 1:15 am EST..in Howard Co...they hadn’t been getting too much wind though quite a bit of rain...guess a gust finally felled a loosened tree onto some lines. Not too surprised with eye now basically parallel.

The dam situation in south MD is sounding pretty bad. Really really hope it is able to hold.

CNN started to mention that. Then the reporters got cut off, and the station went to a “Break”. When they came back they told about it, and actually admitted that they did not know if they could run with the story. They basically admitted that the news is censored.

“I’ll say. Lower Manhattan is just a few feet above the water line. If storm surge causes Lower Manhattan to flood, all that water goes right into the subway tunnels, which will make a HELL of a mess. “

Look at the bright side. The markets would be up 500 points on Monday if that happened.

CNN being over dramatic most likely.. The explanation at Browns Ferry Nuclear plant during the Alabama tornado outbreak was there was nowhere for the power to go and it shut down automatic

Is Irene still classified as a Hurricane? In all seriousness hope all is safe up there..this seems to be a dreadful event.

Hope no one decided to ride out this storm; anyone in its path should evacuate to an Obama shelter.

I have lots of camping gear, moved 3 propane lanterns and a propane cook stove into the house, and sanitized and filled my 4 water jugs to have 22 gallons of clean water.

thanks for update NN. Haven’t been able to sleep much. Not that this storm impacts me directly but just worried about so many of you out there.

I haven’t had TV on once. Dont have cable/dish , but from what many of you said, perhaps that is a blessing with the juggling balance between important coverage & mania.

Keep looking at all the maps & data (which I have no clue how to apply to forecasting)

Looking forward to sunrise & some updates from FReepers who still have the ability to communicate.

I always worry about the pets and the livestock in various areas. Seeing pix of dogs chained to a doghouse on a very short chain is heartbreaking. Big floods & they have no chance.

Prayers continue for you all in safety as you clean up & dig out in many cases.

Be careful if you go outside, if possible wear a hard hat.
Back around 1985 I think in Houston Texas we had a hurricane that came through, what happened was that on many of the downtown office buildings that were under construction there were materials that broke free and then went on a cascade effect of smashing all the high rise windows, there was literally piles of broken glass over 3 feet high on the streets.

I just woke up and I am watching the news, I don’t get any hurricanes here in Alaska but I have been in several when I lived in Texas many years ago.
