Approximately 65 million people are likely to be directly impacted by Hurricane Irene as the storm takes aim at the densely populated Eastern Seaboard. Evacuations are underway for high flood risk areas.
Mass transit cancellations, schedule changes and road/bridge closures are occurring throughout the storm warning areas. Please check with local news and Emergency Management Operations to determine the recommendations for your immediate area.

The trees are the major bitch. Nobody gets out of that one.
On the other hand, the wind seems to have capped out at 35 knots of Cape Henry near Norfolk.

Thank you so much. I am being hopeful for the Jersey Shore. If we survived Snooki, the Situation and J-Wow, Irene shouldn’t be to difficult.
“Isabel wasnt as big and it caused widespread power outages, loss of property and some lives.”
You aren’t kidding. For us in central MD, it was mostly an inconvenience - for some reason, there was hardly even any dry ice to go around! We had some power out for a while. It was a bit surreal and we also had another tree from my parents’ fall down. The neighbor’s tree fell down in the front yard, too, luckily not into their house/garage.
But worse was my uncle who would die of colon cancer the next month. He was down on the water in Northern Neck area of VA, trying to recover from surgery. His brother from ME had come down with he wife to care for him at that time - bad timing! They had to have coolness for him and his medical items and there was no power for a week and no ice! We drove all around our region looking for any kind of ice - finally a seafood place let my dad have a ton of regular ice in the trunk and my dad and ME/healthy uncle met at the Potomac to transfer this ice!
I got whacked twice in 1985. September and November. Thank God I was a bit younger and could help clear it up.
It has just started raining in central NYS.
Not to worry, Bam’s in charge in the Hurricane Command Center. He’s at the controls of the weather machine now. We’re saved! He cares about white people, he really, really does.
Outages are already over 661,000 now.
From Greenville (NC) Electric:
12:42 p.m.
All customers south of the Tar River and east of Highway 11
(except Bells Fork) are without power. Approximately
45,000 of GUC's 63,000 electric customers are affected.
Could be a utility company conspiracy or a tropical depression conspiracy...or both
Wow, I’m starting to really freak out. I just looked outside and it is not just raining, but it is also windy.
Oh yeah, we didn’t have Global Warming! LOL!
I’m so very sorry to hear that. It can be dangerous for people with an illness to be without power. We lost it for 3 days and thank God, we are healthy.
It is raining here, winds are starting to pick up. We had to take down the ez-up. Party still happening here...
A lot of those evacs were island communities and really low lying areas along inland bays and coastal communities. Particularly campgrounds and mobile home communities in and around the water.
Not all were over reaction, at least not in this area.
Checking for the first time today, Light rain since early AM is picking up intensity and very breezy now, puddles starting to form around brick walkway and gravel drive. We’ve got crockpots bubbling a potroast in salsa and cranberry beans and french bread rising on the stove. Our girls made a chocolate Irene go away cake. Good luck to all!
Considering I live in POWHATAN, VA.....not even IN a Tropical Storm Warning area and we have had 40mph winds off and on all day I’d say this is pretty horrendous! I am not even in a WATCH area, just on the west side of Richmond.
I cannot even imagine what it must be like for folks who are in the middle of this storm if this is what I am experiencing. Trees are down all over the place here. It’s a mess.
Thanks, Star.
Media trumpeting aside, I wouldn’t mock or underestimate
the unknown damage/loss in a hurricane when folks have the potential for harm,
especially not with hours and hours and inches of rain and wind pounding yet to happen,
and with vulnerable basins/bodies of water involved and the potential flooding devastation possible,
additionally compounded by the unknown surge factor.
I pray all are protected and safe in this storm.
Irene has been one strange storm for me. About six hours before the storm, I had several fallen large tree branches in my yard. Cleared them out. Storm came through and caused minor yard debris. Has one of the most beautiful evenings in a long while just as eye was parallel to us. Rain bands that almost always hit us decided to go elsewhere. Woke up this AM and the yard looked OK. Storm had been gone hours. Two hours later my yard had several large branches in it again.
