WASHINGTON -- In an effort to stem the illicit flow of weapons into Mexico, the Justice Department announced Monday that all gun shops in four Southwest border states will be required to alert the federal government to frequent buyers of high-powered rifles.
The new policy comes amid criticism of a failed federal probe aimed at dismantling large-scale arms trafficking networks along the Arizona border with Mexico.
In the probe, called Operation Fast and Furious, several agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives say they were inexplicably ordered by superiors to stop tracking some small-time "straw" buyers who purchased large numbers of weapons apparently destined for drug cartels.
Under the new policy, federal firearms licensees in Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico must report purchases of two or more of some types of rifles by the same person in a five-day span. The requirement applies to purchases of semi-automatic rifles that have detachable magazines and a caliber of greater than .22.
ATF estimates it will generate 18,000 reports a year.
Deputy Attorney General James Cole said the new reporting measure will improve the ATF's ability to disrupt illegal weapons trafficking networks that funnel firearms to criminal organizations.
One of the critics of Operation Fast and Furious called the new policy "the height of hypocrisy."

Yes you can it’s called,

OK, a frequent gun buyer I’d like to report is the ATF itself. Seems they like to buy guns to send to the Mexican drug cartels.
“Under what legal authority can they demand the reports?”
Theres no legal basis for this requirement. None. The reporting requirements for multiple handguns is explicitly spelled out by an act of Congress. There are no other requirements for multiple purchases of any other types of weapons.
Presumably the NRA will immediately sue Obama in multiple Federal courts on behalf of hundreds of gun dealers in the affected states.
What are they going to do in Florida where they sell them to use in Honduras.
Still waiting for Issa to open that can of worms.
There are two big wig Drug Cartel leaders from different Cartels saying that Obama/US sold them guns.
One of the leaders is holed up and not allowed to talk to anyone (except lawyer and prison personnel - and not just any prison personnel) He claims he was a CIA asset.
One way to identify new mules for their work.
Personally I’d like to see an immediate injunction filed to stop ANY further progress on this policy...
A lawsuit takes time and money...Something the NRA and the rest of us do NOT need to spend to stop this BS...
The bottom line is this...
So flippin’ what if I buy a few long guns in a month...That is NOT a crime, nor is it anyones frappin’ business what I do...Much less a government agency/department developing reports on my private aquisitions...
But my opposistion would brand me immediately as some sort of subversive person in their opinion...Which is another thing I don’t care much for...
The only information I need about the ATF at this point is that they have been disbanded and every member barred for life from ever serving in law enforcement in any capacity whatsoever.
Tent meet camel nose.
It will start with those Border states and then expanded elsewhere (Hey! Operation Castaway castaway our rights)
Then it will be expanded further in time frame 5 days to 30, 30 days to 90m 90 day to ?
Pretty soon, hello registration!
You can bank on it.
when is enough enough!!??
Well, at least let them work in a mall somewhere...Issue them a radio, whistle and a flashlight...And they can scoot around on one of those Segways...
Wearing a sign that they “used” to work for the ATF...
That way we can laugh our azzes off when they pass by...
Does this include the ATF themselves?
Will they be tracking themselves?
This registration of gun purchases due to the gun violence fron the ATF’s gun walking project was one of the goals of Fast and Furious.
They are trying to brazen this one out.
Anyway, I don't think most of them would be capable.
So lets open up a gun store on the TX Louisiana border.
They are dumber than whale poop.
I sure wish Freepers would stop with this satire stuff. This should be a series site!
“This registration of gun purchases due to the gun violence fron the ATFs gun walking project was one of the goals of Fast and Furious.”
Undoubtedly.
And, given that gun registration has effectively ZERO purpose in deterring crime, the goal of weapon confiscation is pretty clear.
The coverup continues. We already know that gun shops were reporting suspicious buys and ATF agents told them to make the sales and forget about it. That was part of the paradigm of Operation Fast and Furious.
That is the kind of sh-t that makes people want to investigate you for federal misconduct, doesn’t blow the heat off.
