Sarah Palin Versus the Field with 2006 as a Barometer
05/07/2011 | Brices Crossroads

Posted on 05/07/2011 7:47:04 AM PDT by Brices Crossroads

I have observed that the polls and the news readers have taken to reminding us that Sarah Palin's nomination spells certain defeat for the GOP in 2012. Let's examine the question of Sarah Palin's prowess as a candidate, measured against the current field:

It has been noted that former Senator Rick Santorum won his Senate seat in a big GOP year (1994) and lost it big in a Democrat year (2006), sweeping in with one tide and out with another. This is evidence of weakness as a candidate. Let's examine the rest of this field, using 2006 as the barometer.

Tim Pawlenty won reelection in 2006 by the skin of his teeth, less that one half of one per cent. He is no political power house if, as an incumbent with no scandal, he can BARELY hold his seat against a no name Democrat challenger. Had it not been for the Green Party siphoning off Democrat votes, Pawlenty would have lost.

Huckabee, who was Lieutenant Governor, backed into the Governor's Mansion in 1996 when the previous governor went to jail. He managed to hold it through the salad years of Clinton's impeachment and Bush's early ascendancy, but the polls In Arkansas showed him losing badly in the big Democrat year of 2006, so he tucked tail and took his traveling medicine show out West to run for President.

Mitt Romney similarly saw his poll numbers so low that his defeat for reelection in 2006 was all but certain. Rather than face certain defeat and the end of his Presidential ambitions, Romney followed the same path as Huckabee.

So which candidate successfully swam AGAINST the tide of a big Democrat year in 2006 and registered two huge victories? SARAH PALIN. First, she dispatched Governor and three time U.S. Senator Frank Murkowski in the GOP primary by 51-19%. Then she entered the general election campaign. Unlike Pawlenty, who was aided by a challenge from the fringe left, Sarah Palin faced a third Party Challenge by a former GOPer, Andrew Halcro, who self financed a campaign against her and drew nearly 10% of the vote. Facing these adversities, and alone among the rising stars of the GOP, Sarah Palin swam hard against the big Democrat tsunami of 2006. She easily defeated popular two term former Governor Tony Knowles by 8% (the polls near election day said it was a dead heat). That, my friends, is empirical evidence of electoral prowess.

So when the Lamesteam media is telling us who is and who is not electable, based upon their early (and "cooked") polls let's follow the wise counsel of former Governor and 1928 Presidential Candidate Al Smith: "Let's look at the record." And, more to the point, let's force the media to look at the record.

If we do that, they will be forced to acknowledge that it is Sarah Palin--based not only on her great successes of 2010, but also on her tremendous "swim against the tide" in 2006-- who is by far the most formidable candidate the GOP could field in 2012.

Interesting assertion. It might be applicable were Alaska a good microcosm of the entire country. As it is, it’s pretty lame.

Good job. The only polls that give hope, however slight, to the likes of Hucksterbee, Mitzy Romney and Pawlenty are always taken in the heavy left fever swamps/petri dishes of Georgetown, Cleveland Park, Manhattan, Martha’s Vinyard and Hollyweird. Amazing that the MSM still thinks they can select candidates for conservative Americans.

You wait till she gets up on the stage during the debates. Ya ha to meet her in person, talk to her, then you know she is for real and a political that can be trusted to do the right thing.

No joke, she accomplished so much up here during her short tenure; man I wish she was back in charge. Parnell has run in down hill bad.

Palin knows her power comes from the support she receives from the people and she'll never screw them over like most politicals do.

The media attempts to paint this picture that Alaskans now hate her; don't believe it one bit. Most everybody I talk to wishes she was back in charge, keeping it clean and making sure we have good govt up here.

I even heard that nut case Shawna Moore from Moore Up NOrth (lib, gay rights, greenie, left wing goofball who always is yapping about Palin) say she even wishes Sarah Palin was back in charge. She said she misses Palin who had quite a bit of Wally Hickel in her makeup; did what was best for Alaska over what the Repubs wanted done. That's saying lots actually about Palin.

Everybody should just take a look at Palin's record while in politics. Palin would straighten the country out, do the right thing that would benefit all Americans regardless of Party loyalty. She was the best most effective governor I've ever seen over all my years on this earth.

Actually, that should read: “reminding us that (insert name here) nomination spells certain defeat for the GOP in 2012.”

She is the one candidate I will support financially to the edge my own financial discomfort. The rest, with the exception of Christie, strike me a bunch of wind-up Pol Dolls and I would have a hard time supporting any of them.

She has to get thru the primaries, to do that She has to get out a lot of people to vote for Her. And remember, democrats vote in our primaries. McLame comes to mind. On this site She wins, Big.
We have not fixed our selection system and I don’t know why

We are suppose to believe that the RNC's choice of the GOP candidate will be the best one available. Such as McCain and Bob Dole.

The polls that show Palin way behind are skewed to the left because of oversampling of Rino's and rats. Sarah will win if she is the nominee.

"I don’t believe that she is going to run..."

Why don't you believe her when she speaks? Seriously, every time she's asked about whether she's going to run, she admits that she will. How?

By her repeated answer. "It's too early" for her to answer that question. Think for a minute. If she were NOT running, is there any way possible for it to be "too early" to say "I'm not running"? Absolutely impossible. There is no rational or logical reason not to say you're not running at this point in time.

The only way it could possibly be "too early" to answer that question, is if the answer is, "Yes, I am running for President."

She has already confirmed it about a thousand times. You only need logic, and to understand how Sarah thinks. She assumes that most people are at least nearly as smart as she is (despite that 98% of the population is not).

Sarah is running. It's just way too early to throw that steak to the Mainstream Misleadia pack dogs to chew on.

She tells us every time she's asked.

Just the fact that the LSM and the left claim they want her as the candidate to go against Obama makes me think she could win. They are trying to trick us into thinking they really want her but doing it pretty poorly.I think they are really scared to death of her.

I agree, although she did not end up pulling in some independents they had hoped. Like most every elections, the VP doesn’t really impact the election in the end, it is the two top tickets candidates that decide. The VP selection can impact the overall evaluation of the president.

I am certain neither Cheney nor Gore directly won votes for their tickets, but in both cases, the Presidential candidate helped their brand in the selection. With Gore, they had the younger southern things going to combat the old GHWB. With Cheney, Bush was seen to have wisely chosen a veteran politico and defense expert that helped bolster his image. Of course, with Biden, who the hell knows. Other than the debate, we didn’t hardly ever of him during the campaign.

The McCain camp wass stunned by her announcement speech. She came on like gang-busters. At the convention she outshone all the other speakers—only Rudy came close, I think. And McCain, talking about having a hard act to follow: he just looked old.

Palin’s still my favorite...waiting for the “go” word.
I like Herman Cain as well and LtCol West would be a great addition to the ticket as well.
After the SC debate I’m feeling more ‘energized’ about our chances in ‘12 too!

The exit polls and post-election polls were rigged to create a narrative for the left that she was a turn-off, that they used to continuously bat her over the head since.

Not only did the left go after her because they sensed a future star but the GOP establishment also denigrated her, to save McCain's reputation.

I watched McCain's face in news clips where he'd be looking at Palin and I could sense the resentment he had against her for outshining him before the whole nation..

If Palin enters the race, which I doubt, it would be her, armed with a spear against the left, MSM and GOP establishment, all with nuclear arms!

You could include Gov Perry of Texas on your list as well. He won in 2006 in a very republican state. Too bad the national electorate probably won’t go for another gov from Texas; in spite of all his RINOish tendencies, he has a solid record of achievement (much longer than Palin’s, with all due respect) and is more conservative than almost any other candidate out there.

Thanks for your comments. What I have read about her is really impressive. I think she will get a chance to show that. If she runs I think she wins and I really hope she does. I have my mind set on her now.

Ditto!

McCain and his ‘advisors’ know that his defeat would have been Much Worse without Sarah beside him. He actually campaigned with her in October 2008, instead of each of them hitting two separate groups of potential voters. She was the drawing card, and the rock star speaker.

Well said! And lets also not forget that she only need to win the States that GW Bush won in either 2000 or 2004.

I like the line that refers to the MSM polls as “cooked”.... All the polls are MSM
