STANFORD, Calif. - President Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today.
It's "the absolute perfect spot in the U.S. government" to centralize efforts toward creating an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt said.
That news, first reported by CNET, effectively pushes the department to the forefront of the issue, beating out other potential candidates including the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

Remember, such an id would likely be linked permanently to every email you send, reply to, that's forwarded etc.
Oh, almost forgot: FYBO!
Yes, Obama, you want to know who we are because we all know who you are.
This is actually a very interesting story, which I had not known about.
Turns out, if you follow the threads, that the proposed house would have blocked Wheeler's view of the Delaware River. Well, who would have thunk. You buy a propoerty knowing it is across the street from another lot that can be built upon and if someone builds it will block your view, and so you can now bring suit to restrict the neighbor from building. The cheek of building a 21/2 story house! Who would have thought!.
I do not like to discredit those who have served honorably, but between this cybersecurity stuff and wanting to prevent his neighbor from the reasaonble free enjoyment of his own private property, it is sounding like this Wheeler was just anohter globalist elitist who felt it just ok to screw the peasants.
0bamacare, and now, 0bamachip.
Soon coming to sim chips and processors near you.........
This would be a serious abuse of power. I predict that if he does this, the House will impeach. Boehner & Co might strategize as to the time to begin impeachment, but We the People will DEMAND impeachment.
I also predict that during the Senate trial, Chief Justice Roberts will wear a robe that does NOT have those silly gold bands on the sleeves.
Obama will not be convicted by the Senate, but the proceedings will define his presidency.
Or, your arm?
I don’t trust Apple.
Their entire product paradigm is FASCIST.
“Oh, but it runs so good! Why, all the Apple products are so-o-o-o kewl!!”
Fascism is all about “efficiency”, doncha know.
They make Microsoft look like libertarians.
I’ll take the chaos and virtually infinite configurability of a home-built frankenstein and an Open Source OS, like Ubuntu, over anything Apple or Google have to offer.
Schmidt stressed today that anonymity and pseudonymity will remain possible on the Internet. “I don't have to get a credential if I don't want to,” he said. There's no chance that “a centralized database will emerge,” and “we need the private sector to lead the implementation of this,” he said.
Yup. Absolutely no chance. Right. Absolutely.
I would like to relate something I witnessed this past primary season. The ballot, I voted, had a bar code. A scanner was used to scan the ballot before I voted in the primary. Who knows what information was contained on the bar code and who knows whether or not my name was affixed to the ballot, on which I cast my primary votes. Have you seen this method at your place of voting? I can also say, during the general election, this past year, I did not see a bar code on that ballot, nor the same method as I witnessed during the primary voting for that same year. I had never witnessed a bar code affixed to any ballot, I voted, in prior years which I was aware of.

You may be able to beat the beast using Virtual Machine technology. I haven’t looked into it closely, but perhaps using NAT to connect a VM to the network may hide you pretty well.
every computer is already id’d, its called an IP address. These people know no boundaries when it comes to intruding on people’s privacy.
Whoever has developed and tested the software to run this *idea* is a billionaire overnight. T His was true of the security software everyone wanted to buy after 9/11.
That hasn't stopped him so far.
Congress will definitely prevent such a measure. Seriously. The fact he is even thinking about it is a sign that he is terrified of us, the Tea Party.
I don’t expect to be around during that particular phase of the plan, but it’s amazing to see things unfold in a way that I never would have imagined.
