A Clayton County mother of six said the family dog did what he always did when he saw someone. He barked.
But when "Boomer" started barking and running toward a police officer Saturday morning, the officer shot the dog and killed it, Lawrene King told the AJC Sunday night.
Hes a golden retriever," King said. "He barks, but hes never bitten anyone.
A Clayton County police officer was on foot patrol on North Shore Drive when the dog jumped off a porch and started barking and running toward the officer, Capt. Tina Daniel said. The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn't, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard, Daniel said.
The officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a call reporting a suspicious person, police said.

This spaz cop should get the Barney Fife treatment from his commanding officer: make him ask permission to load one bullet in his gun.
Yes, them Goldens are vicious. Hundreds of people are licked to death annually.
Friggin idiot.
Maybe they could deal drugs or something more suitable to their intelligence level.
How awful for this family.
The cop is a coward...
A golden!!! He should be laughed off the police force.
Why are cops allowed to shoot seemingly anything that moves with no penalties?
“The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn’t, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard, Daniel said.”
Did the officer expect the dog to have an understanding of the English language? This is bad as the Seattle PD officer who murdered the Native American woodcarver.
Comply or die, baby! is the name of the game these day.
We have a golden/black lab mix. Barks at our postman and our postman is terrified of her. I can’t figure it out myself.
She probably wants to jump up, lick his face and beg for a treat.
The officer made a mistake because he missed details. The dog wasn’t on a leash, but it was contained within an invisible fence system. An alert officer would have noticed a control collar on the pet before opening fire.
A resident called police to report that someone was selling meat from the back of a white pickup truck, King said.
ordered to stop? This "officer" was not speaking retrievereze. The proper way to address a golden is with a dog biscuit. Sheesh... this pup was probably wagging the whole time, hoping upon hope that the officer would pet him or her on the head.
Those in law enforcement seem really scared and paranoid nowadays...
A Golden Retriever?
Unbelievable...
“The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn’t, the officer shot and killed...”
So...they can shoot to kill if you don’t follow their orders? Wish that went for illegals that don’t understand their orders, either.
My lab loves people too much. He thinks everyone wants to play so he wags his tail & jumps around like a jumping bean. Any cop that shoots a dog that just barks & wants to play should be kicked off the force, made to work for free at an animal rescue group & buy the family another puppy.
Well said.
Anyone takes a pot shot at her while she's still on my property and I'll return fire.
The gun shot probably spooked the suspicious person, but the cop got to shoot a dog. Dog shooting has become a sport among police officers, and as the quality of police recruits continues to decline, this nonsense will get worse.
