DeMint Promotes Redistributing Power to States (DeMint would dismantle many federal departments)
Roll Call ^ | 2010-09-19 | Melanie Starkey

Posted on 09/19/2010 4:41:32 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

Sen. Jim DeMint argued for a “devolution of power out of Washington,” saying Sunday that “the fact is, education probably would work a lot better without the Department of Education.”

The South Carolina Republican had been asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” whether candidates whom he and the tea party movement have endorsed are too far out of the political mainstream. When host Candy Crowley gave Sharron Angle’s call to abolish the Education Department as an example, DeMint said, “She’s very bold to say it.” Angle is the GOP candidate challenging Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) for his Senate seat in Nevada.

I would support a devolution of power out of Washington for education, health care, transportation, and I’ve introduced a lot of legislation for that, too,” DeMint added, saying the power should go to the states. “And you can do it in a common-sense, reasonable way that doesn’t disrupt any of the activities that we support.”

DeMint is going to have to learn how to ride a snowmobile, and shot and gut a moose, if he expects to have a masculine image.Palin transcends the traditional gender gap, and people are very slow to undrstand that. Palin has more balls than any 7 Congress critter males combined. That would not be true if Tom DeLay was still in the house.

A lot of powers should go back to the states. In fact the vast majority of them should.

All except those specifically enumerated as Federal.

Ref: United States Constitution as Amended.

Easily 60% of the fed should be devolved or better yet, terminated altogether.

I love Demint and would vote for him in a heart beat. Winning the Presidency is all about image and looking like a ‘winner’ - take a look at the elections of past years - and you’ll see what I mean. It helps to have the environment to the disadvantage of the incumbent, i.e....

Vietnam War 1968 = Nixon
Watergate 1976 = Carter
Terrible Economy+Iran Hostages 1980 = Reagan
Bad Economy 1992 = Clinton
Impeachment+High Gas Prices 2000 = Bush
Financial Crisis+War 2008 = Obama
Terrible Economy+??? = ???

Since you love the national parks so much would you be willing to buy my share?

Oh wait. I can't sell my “share” and you can't buy it. So the land is de-valued worthless crap and an illusion of collectivism. Barf. Get rid of it and the horse that Teddy Roosevelt rode in on. Teddy the collectivist.

Is that steak raw or cooked? The more well-done, the better - about to the toughness of a real stake, presumably. /jk

DOE also contains some defense contractor functions that are totally necessary.

They were at one time part of the Atomic Energy Commission.

That would have to be seperated.

Good luck with that.

I would have thought that we had a long list of national problems to work through before the issue of federal ownership of national parks was next on the list to deal with. But you might be right. Try it out among your fellow citizens and see what sort of a response you get.

I’d go so far as to say that the entire Department of the Interior be abolished and it’s duties devolved to the states.

After all, the states(territories, commonwealths) ARE the form of administration that oversees the care of everything inside of America.

Yes, it’s of interest.

Loping off about 90% of the departments and government workers is the goal.

I refuse to accept the premise that national parks are constitutional. Because they are a “taking” from the States and the people. Is it politically actionable? No. But if I could I would impose a mandatory evacuation of all federal agencies not identified by a third grader as an “enumerated Federal Power”. P.S. I get to pick the third grader.

I can think of several federal departments that should be dismantled. At minimum downsized greatly and restructured.

I like Jim DeMint too, but many think that Sarah Palin has a “woman” problem. She is hardly a woman in the ordinary sense.

If DeMint underestimates her in that way, he will never get past the first stage of voting at the 2013 Republican convention.

I really liked Fred’s positions on power devolution to the states. He was a little ahead of his time... A younger Fred could catch “fire in a bottle” in 2012, but I’ll settle for DeMint!

Yeah, I have to walk that back a bit. Logic says that if there really were more conservatives in the Republican Party than moderates, then the elections wouldn’t even have been close for Murkowski and Castle. I still don’t think the Tea Party will split first, but I can’t sure of that. The Tea Party has shown that it CAN nominate a conservative over a moderate. The problem with Republican moderates will be to get them to VOTE for that conservative, and not default to the liberal Democrat.

“the record is clear, America’s decline in public education began with the advent of the US Department of Education. How can anyone deny it?”

I will give a TINY amount of credit to Obama for pissing off the teachers unions in more ways than one. He would get some major cred in this area if he endorsed (again) Michelle Rhee in DC.

Certainly, you can’t blame THIS problem on him, things have been going to hell for 40+ years. It’s just that now the foundations themselves are crumbling and the risks to the very future of the country are becoming obvious to everyone. The debate has been “are we falling behind, or is everyone catching up to us”. The answer is: yes.

"Reagan wanted to abolish the Dept of Education. Nobody’s brought it up since then."

"Sheeple get scared when things change too fast, and stating the case as above doesn't sound near as scary and radical as saying we're are going to eliminate the department of education."

Newt brought it up in 1995, and this was one of the things they used to bring him down. I remember it like it was yesterday:

"THE REPUBLICANS WANT TO CUT EDUCATION!!!"

"THEY'RE GOING TO SLASH EDUCATION FUNDING!!!"

"THE REPUBLICANS WON'T FUND EDUCATION!!!"

Newt, Rush, Hannity, and whoever else was behind the mikes were naively unaware of how it would be spun, and we therefore handed them our own defeat on a platter.
