Glenn Beck hopes to make history. He is convinced his Restoring Honor rally, planned for August 28th, will cause shockwaves unfelt in the country since the mid 1750s, the time of the Great Awakening. As I pointed out in an earlier post, Beck is fond of preacher George Whitefield, though I think a strong case was made that Whitefields theology and Becks brand of pluralism are as different as black is from white.
It is probably no coincidence Becks rally was scheduled for the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther Kings I Have a Dream speech, also given in front of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial on The Mall in Washington, D.C in 1963. Another similarity exists. Beck is calling upon both supporters and opponents of the rally to sign MLKs Pledge to Non-Violence.
Al Sharpton, and many black civil rights organizations, in contrast, reject the notion of any similarity between Beck and King, and further accuse Beck of distorting Kings legacy and appropriating the circumstances of Kings rally for his own use. For his part, Beck correctly replies that in the past, Kings socialist connections were denied or downplayed; now in a stunning reversal, MLK is gladly identified as a redistributionist or Marxist. See what change the election of Barack Obama hath wrought!

Booker T. Washington was the pull yourself up through work and initiative guy and that is why he is continually being downgraded and getting less and less ink compared to King and Dubois.
Other than MLK being one of the promoters of abortion for Blacks, a womanizer and a communist, he’s the perfect symbol for the Tea Party. Not getting Beck on this one.
Pray for America
I am tired of all these rallies for one thing or another. It makes one suspicious that Beck and Hannity are mainly after ratings and book sales. Beck is starting to repeat himself, too. It’s depressing to listen to how things are going to hell in a hand basket, but then hear no answers except to “stay strong”.
Ditto for all the various think-tanks and foundations that keep sending me pleas for donations. They never seem to actually accomplish anything, but just do a lot of talking and fund-raising. From now on, I think I will return every one of these letters with the words “Get a real job.” written on them.
I might be more supportive if I knew what purpose Beck had for the event. People sometimes do go home from various rallies “fired up” to accomplish something, but I am not sure what folks will come home from the Honor rally thinking?
As for Glenn Beck and his August 28th rally; like you, I'm not certain exactly where he intends to go with it. My adult son (age 30) intends to go (accompanied by two like-minded conservative friends) because (a) he is a big fan of Beck and (b) he is frustrated by Obama and feels his future is being ruined by liberal politicians - and he wants to 'do something'. He has hinted that he expects this Beck-led rally to be similar to the 1963 March on Washington, which he knows was a game-changer. I seriously doubt Beck's rally will be anything of the kind but I'm proud of my son's determination to do more than just wring his hands over Obama's destruction of our nations pillars. Still, I hope the Beck rally actually accomplishes something other than aggrandizing Glenn Beck, who I mostly admire. We'll see.
I think if you had listened to Kings neice you would begin to understand. I think Beck understands King better than you think.
I’m confused about this whole August 28 rally thing. Last year Glenn Beck announced that this rally was to be an unveiling of some sort of plan (called “The Plan” if I remember correctly) that was supposed to be a grand scheme to “take back” out country from the collectivists. Now Beck and others are saying that this rally is non-partisan and non-political and is about promoting good character among the citizenry and honoring veterans. What the heck? Two months before a critical election is the time for people to invest their effort and money in attending a non-political, feel-good rally with no coherent purpose? This sounds like a big ego trip to me.
My enthusiasm for Beck has waned greatly since his attacks on those who are asking questions about Obama’s elegibility.
This was an act of betrayal if you put it in the context of Beck’s other causes.
That he allowed himself to be influenced by the left’s intense campaign to intimidate anyone who considers this a serious issue, suggests an underlying weakness of character, and a lack of real courage, and makes me suspicious of his overall sincerity.
I would have rated him a niner at one time. Now I give him about a five.
If you could link us to the information about Beck and King’s niece, that would be helpful to the discussion.
To be honest in the context of our constitution being in exiled I don’t see how the presidents eligibility is a serous high priority issue.
Lets say he wasn’t indeed born an American, well what we going to do about it? The Federal government seems convened he is the president and won’t even hear arguments to the contrary, just like the Federal government is convened they got absolute dictatorial authority over deciding the limits of their own power. But at least in the latter case we can practically challenge that with state opposition to their Federal edicts robing it of domestic force.
How are we going to get them to stop respecting the president?
I admit we can do as Arizona proposed to do in having state officials personalty verify the birth certificate of would be president before allowing them on the ballot and their electors to be cast for that man, but thats for future elections at best.
As for Beck’s rally in Washington, well I must admit Beck is a very imperfect man. I was first ticked off at him when he attacked Debra Medina for her slip up on the 9/11 thing. A serous mistake politically as Debra Medina was one our best hopes. But a mistake I think Glen later came around to realizing.
Of course now I’m becoming increasingly agitated at his reverence for Lincoln to the point where i even wrote a letter to him on the topic, the following day he seems to acknowledged parts of the problem with the ideas behind Lincoln’s actions.
But i can’t seriously expect Beck or America fight all of history’s tyrants, or be right on every matter.
Beck is an imperfect man just like the rest of us, hes not a leader as much as many of us have gravitated towards him as such almost default. Beck is instead a beacon of ideas, one of many and we must treat him as such.
We can’t win this fight if we take on every evil at the same time, we must restrict our targets to that which we can take out most opportunistically 1 at a time.
