An Unhappy Day At The Washington Post
The Atlantic ^ | June 25, 2010 | Jeffrey Goldberg

(Warning!Contains Highly Offensive Expletives Undeleted!) Via Instapundit
But also sort of a happy day at The Washington Post, for the dwindling band of writers and editors there who value such old-fashioned traits as temperance in the expression of personal views; forthrightness; and fairness.

The liberal blogger Dave Weigel, who was hired by The Post to cover the conservative movement, has resigned, after advising Matt Drudge on a semi-public forum for leftish commentators to set himself on fire. Put aside the controversy over whether the Post, which was advised by its star blogger, Ezra Klein (who once advised parties unknown, via his Twitter account, to "f*ck tim russert. f*ck him with a spiky acid-tipped dick") that Weigel would do an excellent and balanced job of reporting on conservatives, even understood that it was hiring a liberal, and not a conservative (Ben Smith has more on this aspect of the controversy), the issue in the newsroom today is, How did the Post come to this?

"How could we destroy our standards by hiring a guy stupid enough to write about people that way in a public forum?" one of my friends at the Post asked me when we spoke earlier today. "I'm not suggesting that many people on the paper don't lean left, but there's leaning left, and then there's behaving like an idiot."

I gave my friend the answer he already knew: The sad truth is that the Washington Post, in its general desperation for page views, now hires people who came up in journalism without much adult supervision, and without the proper amount of toilet-training. This little episode today is proof of this. But it is also proof that some people at the Post (where I worked, briefly, 20 years ago) still know the difference between acceptable behavior

I thought every day was an unhappy day at the Washington Post. for years now.

While I've chosen to reconfigure the original words posted in the body of the thread as published in the article above and in my comments below, replaced with the safe version of "f*ck" so as not to offend anyone, clicking onto the direct link to the quote will not provide the same protection. "f*ck tim russert f*ck him with a spiky acid-tipped dick" that Weigel would do an excellent and balanced job of reporting on conservatives, even understood that it was hiring a liberal, and not a conservative (Ben Smith has more on this aspect of the controversy), the issue in the newsroom today is, How did the Post come to this?

How does his writing differ much from any other “journalism” these days?

How did the Post come to this? I’d suggest that it is, in a way, a microcosm of our society: lowered standards.

The irony is that Mr. Weigel would probably be the first to bend your ear about the danger to “professional” journalism presented by bloggers and other amateur writers on the Internet. Maybe he thinks they all behave as badly as he does.

it always cracks me up that the left hates drudge when all he does is post links to other news articles usually in liberal newspapers

pab·lum (păbˈləm) noun

Trite, insipid, or simplistic writing, speech, or conceptualization: “We have to settle for the pablum that passes for the inside dope” (Julie Salamon).

Origin: From Pablum.

Pab·lum (păbˈləm)

A trademark used for a bland soft cereal for infants.

Weigel is beieved to be the inventer.

....then there's behaving like an idiot... How about simply being an idiot?

“some level of standards”

Libtards have no standards except maybe double standards, and most don’t even have those. What do you expect when their Modus Operandi is “by any means necessary”!

“How did the Post come to this?”

Or rather, how did the post come to this 30 years ago?

Don’t be misled by the fact that these things are coming to light now. It’s not that the media scoundrels weren’t like this before; it’s just that electronic communications now makes it possible for them to be caught at it.

I have always thought that as well...I guess they hate his choice of Headlines...it’s funny and just goes to show you how ignorant the left truly is

I love how the Atlantic bends over backwards to distinguish the Post’s judicious leftist propagandists from their potty-mouthed leftist propagandists.

Oh, a duel eh? Well suh, I demand satisfaction!

I hope you don't mind if I use that as an Anonymous quote?

I'd use it in my tag line but that one is permanent.

The author is far behind the times. For several decades Americans were taught to feel and take a stand. Where have you seen a suggestion that one had to be wise. Look at the networks and newspapers: do they report even what their intelligence permits?

This hiring is therefore but a tiny step in miles-long path: as USUAL, they hired a party hack, someone who was sure to bash the conservative movement. Since when does bashing require intelligence?

The author thus intelligently ponders a stupid question.
