GM kicks ‘Chevy' to the curb

Don't call it Chevy.

General Motors leaders are asking Chevrolet employees to refrain from the shorthand etched in America's consciousness for decades. Or, as the New York Times put it, "If General Motors has its way, you won't be driving your Chevy to the levee ever again."

The Times quoted this company memo sent Tuesday: "We'd ask that whether you're talking to a dealer, reviewing dealer advertising, or speaking with friends and family, that you communicate our brand as Chevrolet moving forward.

"When you look at the most recognized brands throughout the world, such as Coke or Apple, for instance, one of the things they all focus on is the consistency of their branding," the memo continued. "Why is this consistency so important? The more consistent a brand becomes, the more prominent and recognizable it is with the consumer."

They are making a mistake. The Chevy is the quintessentially American car. Chevrolet is just another brand.

"We'd ask that whether you're talking to a dealer, reviewing dealer advertising, or speaking with friends and family, that you.... email us at flag@whitehouse.gov to report anyone fishy using the term 'Chevy..."

GOOD ONE!

Yes, the govt will probably have the Stasi walk around and report everyone who owns a Ford

I also owned a mustang thanks to people like you.

Sadly the tranny gave out but at 700 bucks for an ‘88 mustang it wasn’t a bad deal.

My thoughts exactly. What a doofus! Although, here in Texas (Houston specifically) it’s

Coke = Coca Cola
Coke = Dr. Pepper
Coke = Pepsi
Coke = Sprite
Coke = Mountain Dew

The usual is “Wanna coke?” “Sure” “What kind?” “Dr. Pepper” “Sure, here ya go” “thanks!”

Now that Obama has taken over GM, the new Government Motors is pleased to unveil the new 2010 Obamamobile.

This car runs on hot air and broken promises. It has three wheels that speed the vehicle through tight left turns. It comes complete with two teleprompters programmed to help the occupants talk their way out of any violations. The transparent canopy reveals the plastic smiles still on the faces of all the "happy" Democratic owners.

That’s how I grew up too! ( in Houston)

I joined a Facebook group for Texans who call all soft drinks “cokes.”. Just to remind me of home!

My guess is that they are trying to do away with the good ol’ American (and in Marxist-owned speak, “hillbilly”) name recognition that is “Chevy” and trying to make this branch of GM vehicles sound more high class and appealing.

Politically correct product?

Quel dommage!

Proud to have ancestors that came from the hills!

We'uns still call 'em Chevys doggone it

The 20 standard answers on a Magic 8-Ball are:

As I see it, yes
It is certain
It is decidedly so
Most likely
Signs point to yes
Without a doubt
Yes
Yes - definitely
You may rely on it

Reply hazy, try again
Ask again later
Better not tell you now
Cannot predict now
Concentrate and ask again
Don’t count on it
My reply is no
My sources say no
Outlook not so good
Very doubtful

I think his is stuck on “Outlook not so good”.............

I think politically correct is a good way of putting it.

I definately don’t see this campaign being successful.

The Marxists forget that the demographic that is loyal to American brands and still drive Chevys, Fords and Dodges (mostly pick-ups) is the same demographic that gives these companies any kind of hope of survival. I doubt that someone with $40,000 to drop on a car runs to a Chevy dealer to buy a Impala. They run to Nissan, Lexus, or BMW, I’m sure.

Of course, Ford right now doesn’t need any assistance, but Chevy and Dodge need to watch who they are marketing these things to. Without the loyalists, especially the pick up truck ones, they will be going no where fast. I’d be willing to bet that the truck market makes up the majority of whatever profits they bring in. And it ain’t too often I find a yuppy driving a 3/4 pick-up truck in the city.

I’m married to a Dodge, er, Cummins, enthusiast. He likes his trucks to run like trucks, feel like trucks and drive like trucks. He’s always said if he wants a Cadillac, he’ll go buy one. His best friend is a GM loyalist and drives a Duramax. These are some good ol’ boys if I ever seen one and they don’t give two yaknowwhats about fancy, proper names. So I’m with you...Chevy will always be “Chevy”...even if one never gets in my driveway.

What flavor Coke?

My wife had a mexican coke at lunch, and the pub we ate at serves 8 oz bottles of Imperial Sugar Dr. Pepper, too.
