AZ-Sen. 2010: McCain zeroes in on Hayworth's World War II claims
Politico ^ | 2010-05-25 | Sean J. Miller

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) seized on his primary rival’s shaky historical knowledge this week. On Monday, his camp released a video of former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-Ariz.) saying the United States didn't declare war on Nazi Germany during the Second World War, but rather, it was vice versa.

Hayworth's incorrect statement has now made its way into a vintage-looking Web video the McCain camp released Tuesday. With the primary still months away, however, this is unlikely to linger as an issue.

Germany did declare war on the USA. I do not believe we ever declared war on Germany. I am not sure but they did declare war first.

Clearly the most important issue in the race.

The MSM heard Obama talk about visiting all 57 states and shrugged it off.
A Conservative candidate in AZ? A little shaky on diplomatic history of 1941?? Stop the Presses!!!

Hell, General MacCain led the charge against Germany after they attacked Peal Harbor. Everyone knows that. “I shall return,” General MacCain said, as he waded ashore Waikiki in hip boots.

Germany declared war on us first. Hayworth appears to be saying that we never declared war in response, which we did obviously.

It's still a stupid ad.

December 11, 1941: Germany and Italy declare war on US

Germany and Italy have announced they are at war with the United States. America immediately responded by declaring war on the two Axis powers.

Three days ago, US President Franklin Roosevelt announced America was at war with Japan, the third Axis power, following the surprise attack on its naval base at Pearl Harbor.

We declared war on Germany on Dec 11 1941.

They had not, previous to that, formally declared war against us.

On December 11th, 1941 Germany and Italy declare war on the United States. Later that day, the United States declares war on Germany and Italy.

Hayworth is correct that Germany declared war on us (first) in World War II. He is incorrect if he said we never declared war.

Regardless of how questionable McCain’s arguement is, if this is the worst he can attack Hayworth on then his campaign is in real trouble.

OK. I guess I was wrong. They did declare war against us first. But we most certainly followed it up later that same day by declaring war against them.

Hey John,

On December 11, 1941, Germany and Italy announced they were at war with the United States. America immediately responded by declaring war on the two Axis powers

Looks like J.D. was right.

OK, this one has me going “HUH???” I thought Germany kept their treaty with Japan, and declared war on us after we declared war on Japan following the attack upon Pearl. We then responded be declaring war upon Germany after they made their declaration on us. Now if this is wrong, PLEASE someone corrcet me and the history I have heard over the years. If I am correct, then someone please explain to me WTH this article is all about...

Why didn't McCain ZERO in on this:

"During a campaign speech in Beaverton, Oregon, on May 9, 2008, Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama, said that he'd visited all 57 states during his campaign."

"The comment was mostly ignored by the mainstream media but in early September 2008 several conservative blogs began to draw comparisons between Obama's quote and the 57 member states of the "Organization of the Islamic Conference" alluding to the false rumors that Obama is Muslim. World Net Daily: Muslim Fingerprints in Obama's History (September 9, 2008)"

57 States Quote

"Obama: "Over the last fifteen months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states, I think — one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii I was not allowed to go to … my staff could not justify it."

What did McCain say about THIS?
